1Read the Thai proverb: "นกน้อยทำรังแต่พอตัว" (A small bird builds a nest just big enough for itself). What does this proverb teach?
A.Hard work always leads to wealth
B.Family unity is the source of happiness
C.Knowledge is more valuable than money
D.Live within your means and do things in proportion to your ability
Explanation: The proverb "นกน้อยทำรังแต่พอตัว" uses the image of a bird building a nest sized to itself to teach that people should live according to their status and means and not overreach. It is a classic O-NET literature/idiom item testing interpretation of สำนวนสุภาษิต.
2In the Thai sentence "เธอวิ่งเร็วมาก" (She runs very fast), which word is the คำวิเศษณ์ (adverb/modifier) describing the verb?
A.เร็ว
B.เธอ
C.วิ่ง
D.มาก
Explanation: In "เธอวิ่งเร็วมาก", the word เร็ว (fast) modifies the verb วิ่ง (run), so it functions as a คำวิเศษณ์ describing how the action is done. The word มาก then intensifies เร็ว.
3Read the passage: "แม้ฝนจะตกหนัก ชาวนาก็ยังคงออกไปทำงานในนาเช่นเดิม" What is the relationship between the two clauses?
A.Cause and effect (the rain caused the farmer to work)
B.Concession (despite the rain, the farmer still worked)
C.Purpose (the farmer worked in order to make it rain)
D.Simple time sequence with no logical link
Explanation: The conjunction แม้...ก็ signals concession: it sets up a contrast where the expected result (staying home because of heavy rain) does not happen, and the farmer works anyway. Recognizing คำเชื่อม (connectives) and the logic they express is a core reading-comprehension skill.
4Which sentence uses correct Thai spelling (การสะกดคำ)?
A.เขาเป็นคนที่มีน้ำใจโอบอ้อมอารีย์
B.เขาเป็นคนที่มีน้ำใจโอบอ้อมอาลี
C.เขาเป็นคนที่มีน้ำใจโอบอ้อมอารี
D.เขาเป็นคนที่มีน้ำใจโอบอ้อมอารีร์
Explanation: The correct spelling of the phrase meaning generous and kind-hearted is โอบอ้อมอารี, with no ย์ or ร์ at the end. O-NET regularly tests commonly misspelled Thai words.
5The word "กตัญญู" most nearly means:
A.Being brave in the face of danger
B.Being honest in all dealings
C.Being patient under hardship
D.Being grateful and showing gratitude to those who have helped you
Explanation: กตัญญู (from Pali/Sanskrit) means knowing and acknowledging the kindness others have done for you, i.e. gratitude, especially toward parents and benefactors. It is a key Thai cultural and Buddhist value frequently tested in vocabulary items.
6Which pair of words are คำพ้องเสียง (homophones — same sound, different spelling and meaning)?
A.ใจ – ไจ
B.การ์ด – กาด
C.ข้าว – ข่าว
D.ฟัน – ฝัน
Explanation: ใจ and ไจ are pronounced identically (jai) but spelled differently (ใ vs ไ) and carry different meanings (heart/mind vs a coil/skein), so they are คำพ้องเสียง. Distinguishing the four near-pairs tests knowledge of Thai tone and vowel symbols.
7Read: "การประหยัดพลังงานช่วยลดค่าใช้จ่ายและรักษาสิ่งแวดล้อม" What is the main idea (ใจความสำคัญ) of this sentence?
A.Electricity bills are too expensive
B.Saving energy brings both economic and environmental benefits
C.The environment is being destroyed
D.Everyone must use less water
Explanation: The sentence states two benefits of energy saving — lowering costs and protecting the environment — joined by และ, so the main idea is that energy conservation yields both benefits together. Identifying ใจความสำคัญ is a core O-NET reading skill.
8In the line of Thai verse "ความรู้คู่คุณธรรม นำชีวิตให้รุ่งเรือง", which literary device of sound is most evident?
A.อุปมา (explicit simile)
B.อุปลักษณ์ (metaphor)
C.สัมผัสอักษร (alliteration of consonant sounds)
D.บุคคลวัต (personification)
Explanation: The repeated initial ค sound in ความรู้ คู่ คุณธรรม creates สัมผัสอักษร (alliteration), a sound device prized in Thai poetry. The question tests recognition of โวหารภาพพจน์ and sound patterns.
9Which sentence is written in formal/official Thai style (ภาษาทางการ) suitable for a government letter?
A.เราอยากชวนนายมาประชุมวันนั้นนะ
B.มาประชุมกันหน่อยดิวันนั้น
C.อยากให้แกมาประชุมด้วยอ่ะ
D.ข้าพเจ้าขอเรียนเชิญท่านเข้าร่วมประชุมในวันดังกล่าว
Explanation: Option 0 uses respectful pronouns (ข้าพเจ้า, ท่าน) and the polite verb ขอเรียนเชิญ, which is the register of official correspondence. The other options use colloquial particles (นะ, ดิ, อ่ะ) and informal address.
10Arrange these phrases into a logical sentence: (1) จึงสอบได้คะแนนดี (2) เพราะเขาตั้งใจอ่านหนังสือ (3) ในการสอบครั้งนี้. Which order is correct?
A.2 - 1 - 3
B.1 - 2 - 3
C.3 - 1 - 2
D.2 - 3 - 1
Explanation: The cause (เพราะเขาตั้งใจอ่านหนังสือ) comes first, followed by the result (จึงสอบได้คะแนนดี), then the prepositional phrase of time/place (ในการสอบครั้งนี้): "เพราะเขาตั้งใจอ่านหนังสือ จึงสอบได้คะแนนดีในการสอบครั้งนี้." Sentence-ordering (เรียงประโยค) is a recurring O-NET item type.

About the O-NET Exam

O-NET, the Ordinary National Educational Test, is Thailand's national achievement test administered by the National Institute of Educational Testing Service (NIETS) to students in Grades 6, 9 and 12 (Prathom 6, Mathayom 3 and Mathayom 6). It measures knowledge against the Basic Education Core Curriculum B.E. 2551 (2008). At Mathayom 6 the test covers five subjects — Thai language, English, Social Studies (religion, culture), Mathematics and Science — almost entirely as 5-option single-best-answer multiple choice, with each subject scored from 0 to 100 by criterion-referenced scoring. Since 2022 O-NET has been voluntary rather than mandatory and is no longer used in TCAS university admissions or for M1/M4 school entry, while M3 and M6 are transitioning to computer-based Digital Testing. This free practice set distributes 100 questions across the five M6 subjects in proportion to their official item counts.

O-NET Study Tips from Top Performers

1Practise reading comprehension in both Thai and English with self-contained passages — many O-NET items embed a short text and ask for the main idea, inference, or author's purpose.
2Drill Thai grammar, proverbs (สุภาษิต), idioms and classical literature such as Ramakien and Phra Aphai Mani, which recur in the Thai paper.
3For English, review core grammar (tenses, conditionals, passive, reported speech, question tags), functional conversation responses, and vocabulary in context.
4Social Studies rewards breadth: review the Five Precepts and Four Noble Truths, the three branches of government, supply and demand, the Sufficiency Economy, ASEAN, and key Thai history dates (1238 Sukhothai era, 1782, 1932).
5Mathematics is short but weighty per item — be fast and accurate with sets, logic, exponents, functions, sequences, simple/compound interest, statistics and probability.
6In Science, secure the basics across biology, chemistry, physics and Earth/space science, and practise simple calculations (speed, energy, pH, genetics ratios).
7Time yourself per subject and answer every question — there is no penalty, so never leave a multiple-choice item blank.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is O-NET mandatory and is it used for university admission?

Each subject is scored from 0 to 100 using criterion-referenced scoring against the national curriculum standards. There is no fixed pass/fail mark; scores are reported per subject for use by schools and the education system.

Is there any fee to take O-NET?

No. O-NET is free; school-enrolled students pay nothing, and even equivalency (เทียบเท่า) candidates such as non-formal education or homeschool students register without charge through NIETS.

Is O-NET moving to computer-based testing?
