Advanced Chemical Tanker Cargo Operations is the STCW Reg V/1-1 endorsement for officers and crew with immediate responsibility for cargo on chemical tankers, assessed to Table A-V/1-1-3. Candidates must first hold the basic oil/chemical tanker certificate and have at least three months of approved chemical-tanker service or approved onboard training. The roughly five-day approved course covers chemical tanker design (IMO ship types 1/2/3, stainless-steel and zinc/epoxy tanks, deepwell pumps, heating, dedicated lines, ESD), the IBC Code (Certificate of Fitness, Chapter 17 carriage requirements, P&A Manual), cargo properties and the compatibility/segregation chart, inhibitors and inhibitor certificates, cargo operations (ullaging, nitrogen padding, vapour return, prewash and the MARPOL Annex II categories X/Y/Z with the 75-litre stripping standard and en-route discharge criteria), gas detection (oxygen, LFL/UFL, TLV/PEL), and health hazards, first aid (MFAG) and emergency response. Assessment is pass/fail against the provider's standard, commonly a multiple-choice written test plus practical demonstration.

1Under STCW Regulation V/1-1, which personnel must hold a certificate in ADVANCED training for chemical tanker cargo operations?
A.Masters, chief engineer officers, chief mates, second engineer officers and any person with immediate responsibility for cargo operations on chemical tankers
B.Only the ship's master and chief engineer officer
C.All ratings forming part of a navigational watch
D.Only shore-based cargo surveyors and terminal staff
Explanation: STCW Reg V/1-1 paragraph 5 requires masters, chief engineer officers, chief mates, second engineer officers and any person with immediate responsibility for loading, discharging, care in transit, handling of cargo, tank cleaning or other cargo-related operations on chemical tankers to hold a certificate in advanced training for chemical tanker cargo operations.
2Before certification in advanced chemical tanker cargo operations under Reg V/1-1, what minimum approved seagoing service on chemical tankers is generally required as a prerequisite?
A.Three months of approved seagoing service on chemical tankers (or approved onboard training)
B.One month of approved seagoing service on chemical tankers
C.Six months of approved seagoing service on any tanker
D.Twelve months of approved seagoing service on oil tankers
Explanation: STCW Reg V/1-1 paragraph 6 requires the candidate to first hold the basic certificate and to have completed at least three months of approved seagoing service on chemical tankers, or alternatively an approved period of onboard training, before advanced certification.
3Under the IBC Code, an IMO Type 1 chemical tanker is intended to carry products that:
A.May be carried in any single-hull configuration without restriction
B.Present only moderate hazards requiring minimal containment
C.Are non-hazardous bulk liquids such as vegetable oils
D.Present the most severe environmental and safety hazards and require maximum preventive measures against escape
Explanation: The IBC Code defines a Type 1 ship as one intended to transport Chapter 17 products with very severe environmental and safety hazards that require maximum preventive measures to preclude an escape of such cargo; Type 1 imposes the strictest tank-location and damage-survival standards.
4Which document sets out the specific cargoes a chemical tanker is permitted to load, carry and discharge, together with carriage conditions?
A.The International Oil Pollution Prevention (IOPP) Certificate
B.The International Ship Security Certificate
C.The Minimum Safe Manning Document
D.The Certificate of Fitness for the Carriage of Dangerous Chemicals in Bulk
Explanation: Under the IBC Code, a chemical tanker carries a Certificate of Fitness for the Carriage of Dangerous Chemicals in Bulk, which lists the products the ship may carry and the conditions of carriage; only listed cargoes may be loaded.
5What is the primary purpose of nitrogen padding (blanketing) above a sensitive chemical cargo such as styrene monomer?
A.To increase the cargo temperature for easier discharge
B.To raise tank pressure so cargo can be discharged without pumps
C.To exclude oxygen and moisture, preventing oxidation, polymerisation or moisture contamination of the cargo
D.To neutralise acidic vapours in the tank
Explanation: Nitrogen padding maintains an inert blanket over the cargo to exclude oxygen and atmospheric moisture, which prevents oxidation, oxygen-initiated polymerisation and water contamination for cargoes that are reactive with air or moisture.
6A cargo such as butadiene or vinyl acetate is loaded with an added inhibitor. Before loading, what document must the master obtain from the shipper?
A.A bunker delivery note
B.An inhibitor certificate stating the inhibitor type, quantity, date added and duration of effectiveness
C.A ballast water management plan
D.A garbage record book entry
Explanation: For inhibited cargoes the IBC Code requires the shipper to supply an inhibitor certificate giving the name and quantity of inhibitor, the date added, the expected duration of effectiveness and any temperature limits, so the crew can verify the cargo will remain stabilised throughout the voyage.
7Under MARPOL Annex II, a noxious liquid substance classified in Category X is one that, if discharged into the sea, is deemed to present:
A.A minor hazard, justifying relaxed discharge restrictions
B.No hazard at all
C.A major hazard, justifying a prohibition of discharge into the marine environment
D.A hazard only to ship structure, not to the environment
Explanation: MARPOL Annex II Category X covers NLS deemed to present a major hazard to marine resources or human health, justifying the prohibition of discharge into the marine environment; Category X tanks require a mandatory prewash with residues sent ashore.
8For ships constructed on or after 1 January 2007, MARPOL Annex II limits the quantity of cargo residue that may remain in a tank certified for Category X, Y or Z substances to a maximum of:
A.300 litres per tank
B.150 litres per tank
C.75 litres per tank
D.10 litres per tank
Explanation: MARPOL Annex II requires that the pumping and piping of ships built on or after 1 January 2007 be arranged so that each tank certified for Category X, Y or Z does not retain more than 75 litres of residue, ensuring efficient stripping performance.
9When discharging permitted NLS residue/water mixtures into the sea under MARPOL Annex II, the ship must be proceeding en route at a speed of at least:
A.4 knots
B.7 knots
C.10 knots
D.15 knots
Explanation: MARPOL Annex II permits discharge of qualifying residue/water mixtures only when the ship is en route at not less than 7 knots (for self-propelled ships), at least 12 nautical miles from the nearest land and in water at least 25 metres deep.
10Two cargoes that react together in a hazardous manner must be segregated. Under the IBC Code, an acceptable method of segregation is to separate them by:
A.A cofferdam, void space, pump room, empty tank or a tank containing a mutually compatible cargo, with separate piping and venting
B.A common vent line shared between the two tanks
C.A single valve in an otherwise shared pumping system
D.Carrying them in adjacent tanks with no barrier
Explanation: The IBC Code requires reactive cargoes to be segregated by a cofferdam, void space, cargo pump room, empty tank or a tank holding a mutually compatible cargo, with separate pumping/piping systems and separate venting so the vapours and liquids cannot mix.
