Frequently Asked Questions
What is the pass mark for the SLCAA ATC Knowledge Test?
Candidates must obtain not less than 70% of the possible marks. SLCAA-AC-PEL018 requires the licence examination to be taken as a single sitting covering all applicable subjects.
Does SLCAA publish how long the examination lasts, or how the marks are split between subjects?
No. SLCAA-AC-PEL018 states that the time allowed for each examination is given to the applicant at booking and again by the invigilator before the paper starts, and the Authority publishes the subject list without percentage weightings. The percentages shown on this page describe how our free practice bank is distributed, not the official paper.
How long are SLCAA ATC Knowledge Test results valid?
Each knowledge test result is valid for 24 calendar months, as stated in SLCAA-AC-PEL018 and SLCAR Part 1A.
Where is the SLCAA examination conducted, and in what language?
Written examinations are conducted by the SLCAA Personnel Licensing (PEL) Office, usually at the SLCAA examination hall at the Lungi office. English is Sierra Leone's official language and SLCAR Part 1A requires demonstrated English language proficiency for the licence, so the examination is sat in English.
What happens if a candidate fails the ATC exam?
A candidate who fails the knowledge test is allowed to re-sit a maximum of two times. A further retake is permitted only on presenting evidence of additional instruction from an authorised instructor or refresher training at an Approved Training Organisation.
Who is eligible to apply for a Sierra Leone Air Traffic Controller Licence?
Under SLCAR Part 1A the applicant must be at least 21 years of age, hold a Class 3 medical certificate, complete an approved training course, hold an authorised instructor's endorsement for the knowledge test, and demonstrate the required competence under a supervising on-the-job training instructor.
