1Which of the following is NOT one of the binding geodetic reference systems listed in § 2(1) of Decree No. 300/2009 Z. z.?
A.European Terrestrial Reference System 1989 (ETRS89)
B.Baltic Vertical Datum after adjustment (Bpv)
C.European Vertical Reference System (EVRS)
D.World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS 84)
Explanation: Section 2(1) of Decree No. 300/2009 Z. z. lists the binding geodetic reference systems: ETRS89, the S-JTSK coordinate system, the Baltic Vertical Datum after adjustment (Bpv), the European Vertical Reference System (EVRS) and the gravimetric system (S-Gr). WGS 84 is the reference system of GPS satellites, but it is not a binding Slovak system; GNSS results are expressed in ETRS89 and transformed to S-JTSK.
2How is the S-JTSK coordinate system defined in Decree No. 300/2009 Z. z.?
A.GRS80 ellipsoid, Transverse Mercator projection; x axis north, y axis east
B.Bessel 1841 ellipsoid, Křovák's conformal conic projection; x axis south, y axis west
C.Krasovsky ellipsoid, Gauss-Krüger projection; x axis north, y axis east
D.Hayford ellipsoid, oblique stereographic projection centred on Bratislava; x axis east, y axis north
Explanation: Decree No. 300/2009 Z. z. defines S-JTSK by the Bessel 1841 ellipsoid and Křovák's projection, a conformal conic projection in general (oblique) position computed in four steps (ellipsoid to sphere, spherical to cartographic coordinates, reduction of the sphere and projection to the cone, unrolling to the plane). The x axis points south and the y axis points west, so coordinates in Slovakia are positive.
3Which prime meridian is the S-JTSK coordinate system (EPSG::2065) based on, according to Decree No. 300/2009 Z. z.?
A.The Ferro meridian, located 17°40′ west of Greenwich
B.The Greenwich meridian
C.The Paris meridian, located 2°20′ east of Greenwich
D.The meridian of Bratislava
Explanation: Decree No. 300/2009 Z. z. defines S-JTSK with the prime meridian Ferro, located 17°40′ west of Greenwich; the longitude of the cartographic pole is 42°30′ east of Ferro. The decree also lists Greenwich-based variants of the JTSK realization (EPSG::5513 and EPSG::5514).
4To what is the Baltic Vertical Datum after adjustment (Bpv) referred, and what kind of heights does it use?
A.To the Amsterdam tide gauge (Normaal Amsterdams Peil); orthometric heights
B.To the Trieste tide gauge on the Adriatic Sea, as in Austria-Hungary; dynamic heights
C.To the zero of the Kronstadt tide gauge on the Baltic Sea; normal heights
D.To the GRS80 ellipsoid; ellipsoidal heights
Explanation: Decree No. 300/2009 Z. z. defines Bpv as a kinematic height reference system referred to the mean level of the Baltic Sea through the zero of the Kronstadt tide gauge. Bpv uses normal heights, so normal corrections in the sense of Molodensky's theory are applied to measured height differences. Its realization is Bpv from 1957 (EPSG::8357).
5What is the national realization of ETRS89 in Slovakia under § 2(4) of Decree No. 300/2009 Z. z.?
A.ETRF89 at epoch 1989.0
B.ITRF2020 at the current epoch
C.SKTRF2008, corresponding to ETRF2014 at epoch 2022.0
D.SKTRF2022, corresponding to ETRF2000 at epoch 2008.5
Explanation: Section 2(4) of Decree No. 300/2009 Z. z. states that the national realization of ETRS89 is the Slovak Terrestrial Reference Frame SKTRF2022, which corresponds to ETRF2000 at epoch 2008.5. It is a national densification based on points of the State Spatial Network (ŠPS) processed against EUREF permanent stations.
6What is the difference between the JTSK03 and JTSK realizations of S-JTSK under § 2(5) of Decree No. 300/2009 Z. z.?
A.JTSK03 is based on State Spatial Network points tied to ETRS89; JTSK on State Trigonometric Network points
B.JTSK03 is a height realization in Bpv; JTSK is the positional realization of S-JTSK
C.JTSK03 is used only for cadastral maps, while JTSK is used only for engineering and industrial surveys
D.JTSK03 uses the Greenwich meridian with negative coordinates; JTSK uses only the Ferro meridian
Explanation: Section 2(5) of Decree No. 300/2009 Z. z. describes JTSK03 as the set of plane coordinates of State Spatial Network points with an unambiguous relation to the national ETRS89 realization (EPSG::8352 or 8353), and JTSK as the set of plane coordinates of State Trigonometric Network points (EPSG::2065, 5513 or 5514). SKPOS provides coordinates in JTSK03, and JTSK values are obtained with the official interpolation table or the departmental transformation service.
7Under § 2(9) of Decree No. 300/2009 Z. z., what model is the global transformation key between ETRS89 (ETRF2000) and S-JTSK (JTSK03) based on?
A.An affine 2D transformation with six parameters computed separately for each district
B.A seven-parameter Burša-Wolf spatial similarity transformation valid for the whole territory
C.A third-degree polynomial transformation fitted to cadastral boundary points in each region
D.A simple shift of coordinates by constant values in x and y for each cadastral district
Explanation: Section 2(9) of Decree No. 300/2009 Z. z. states that the global transformation key between ETRF2000 and JTSK03 consists of seven parameters (three translations, three rotations and a scale parameter) computed by a spatial similarity transformation using the Burša-Wolf model, valid for the whole territory of Slovakia. Křovák's projection equations then convert Bessel ellipsoid coordinates to the plane.
8Into which classes are points of the State Spatial Network (Štátna priestorová sieť, ŠPS) divided, and what forms the highest class?
A.Classes 0 to 3; class 0 consists of first-order trigonometric points of the State Trigonometric Network
B.Orders I to V; order I consists of fundamental levelling points
C.Classes A to D; class A consists of permanent reference stations (SKPOS and EUREF permanent network)
D.Classes 1 to 4; class 1 consists of cadastral boundary points
Explanation: The ÚGKK directive for managing geodetic control divides ŠPS points into classes A to D according to monumentation, observation length and processing. Class A consists of points with permanent observation, i.e. permanent reference stations in the EUREF Permanent Network and SKPOS; class B consists of points of the Slovak geodynamic reference network (SGRN). GKÚ states that most SKPOS stations form the highest class A of ŠPS.
9Which SKPOS service provides real-time RTK corrections for phase measurements with an accuracy of about 2 to 4 cm?
A.SKPOS_dm
B.SKPOS_cm
C.SKPOS_mm
D.SKPOS_RINEX
Explanation: According to GKÚ, SKPOS_cm provides real-time differential corrections for phase measurements (RTK) via the NTRIP protocol, in the virtual reference station or nearest station concept, with an accuracy of 2 to 4 cm; it is typically used in geodesy and the cadastre. SKPOS_dm provides code (DGNSS) corrections at 0.3 to 1 m, and SKPOS_mm provides data for post-processing at mm to cm level.
10In Křovák's projection, the sphere is reduced by the coefficient k₁ = 0.9999 before projection to the cone. What is the purpose of this reduction?
A.To convert Ferro longitudes into Greenwich longitudes before computing plane coordinates
B.To make the projection equal-area instead of conformal, so that parcel areas are preserved
C.To move the coordinate origin so that all coordinates on the territory are positive
D.To create two non-distorted parallels, with negative distortion between them and positive outside
Explanation: The reduction coefficient k₁ = 0.9999 (listed among the constants in Decree No. 300/2009 Z. z.) scales the sphere so that the cone effectively cuts it along two non-distorted parallels. Length distortion is negative between them and positive outside them, keeping the extreme values smaller than with a single tangent parallel. The projection remains conformal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the structure of the KGK qualification examination?

Under the KGK Examination and Authorization Rules, the examination consists of a discussion of the submitted projects (three chosen by the commission), a written part and an oral part that discusses incomplete answers from the written part. All commission members may ask questions.

How is the examination graded?

There is no percentage pass mark. The candidate passes only by passing all three parts. The commission evaluates the examination without the candidate present as 'vyhovel' (passed) or 'nevyhovel' (failed), with more than half of the members agreeing; a failed candidate may repeat it after six months.

Who may take the examination?

Under § 6(10) of Act No. 487/2021 Z. z., the applicant needs a second-level university degree in geodesy and cartography (or a recognized equivalent) and at least five years of practice in selected geodetic and cartographic activities. The application also requires at least ten representative projects and a recommendation from a KGK member holding a § 6(d) to (j) authorization for at least seven years.

Does passing the KGK examination allow me to authorize geometric plans?

Not by itself. The KGK examination covers activities under § 6(d) to (j) of Act No. 215/1995 Z. z. Geometric plans and other activities under § 6(a) to (e) taken into state documentation also require special professional competence granted by ÚGKK after its own qualification examination, and geometric plans must also be officially verified by the district office.

In which language is the examination held, and is this bank official?

KGK's application, rules and syllabus are in Slovak, and projects chosen by the commission must be submitted in the official language. This bank is independent English-language multiple-choice practice prepared by OpenExamPrep; it is not an official translation or past paper, and it does not simulate the written, oral or project-defence parts.
