1Which organelle is primarily responsible for the synthesis of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and the assembly of ribosomal subunits in eukaryotic cells?
A.Nucleolus
B.Rough endoplasmic reticulum
C.Golgi apparatus
D.Centrosome
Explanation: The nucleolus is a non-membrane-bound dense subnuclear structure where rRNA transcription and initial ribosome subunit assembly occur. Completed subunits are subsequently exported through nuclear pore complexes into the cytosol.
2How many chromatids does a human diploid somatic cell contain during the G2 phase of the cell cycle?
A.23
B.46
C.92
D.184
Explanation: A human somatic cell has 46 chromosomes (2n = 46). During the S phase each chromosome is replicated, so in G2 every chromosome consists of two sister chromatids joined at the centromere: 46 × 2 = 92 chromatids. The chromosome number stays 46 until the sister chromatids separate in anaphase.
3Which component of the eukaryotic plasma membrane is primarily responsible for maintaining fluidity across fluctuating physiological temperatures?
A.Sphingomyelin head groups
B.Peripheral proteins
C.Glycocalyx oligosaccharides
D.Cholesterol
Explanation: Cholesterol acts as a bidirectional membrane fluidity buffer. At high temperatures, its rigid steroid ring restricts excessive phospholipid fatty acyl chain mobility, while at low temperatures it prevents dense chain packing and crystallization.
4Which mechanism describes the active transport of glucose across the apical membrane of human intestinal enterocytes against its concentration gradient?
A.Primary active transport via ATP-binding cassette transporter
B.Secondary active transport via sodium-glucose symport
C.Facilitated diffusion through GLUT2 transporter
D.Simple passive diffusion across lipid bilayer
Explanation: The sodium-glucose cotransporter 1 (SGLT1) couples the downhill influx of two sodium ions down their electrochemical gradient to the uphill transport of one glucose molecule into the enterocyte. The sodium gradient is continuously maintained by the basolateral Na+/K+ ATPase pump.
5What is the primary role of the lysosome in eukaryotic cell biology?
A.Oxidation of very-long-chain fatty acids producing hydrogen peroxide
B.Post-translational O-linked glycosylation of secretory proteins
C.Enzymatic degradation of macromolecules via acid hydrolases
D.Synthesis of steroid hormones from cholesterol esters
Explanation: Lysosomes are acidic membrane-bound organelles maintaining an internal pH of approximately 4.5 to 5.0 via vacuolar H+-ATPases. They contain over 50 acid hydrolases that degrade endocytosed material, damaged organelles, and cellular debris.
6In which substage of prophase I of meiosis does crossing-over between non-sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes take place?
A.Leptotene
B.Zygotene
C.Pachytene
D.Diplotene
Explanation: Crossing-over occurs during pachytene once synapsis is fully established by the synaptonemal complex. Recombination nodules mediate physical genetic exchange between non-sister chromatids.
7Which cytoskeletal filament is composed of actin subunits and generates contractile forces in non-muscle animal cells?
A.Microtubules
B.Intermediate filaments
C.Neurofilaments
D.Microfilaments
Explanation: Microfilaments (actin filaments) are polar, two-stranded helical polymers of globular G-actin subunits that form F-actin. Interacting with myosin motor proteins, they drive cytokinesis furrowing, amoeboid motility, and cortical tension.
8What is the primary function of the rough endoplasmic reticulum in mammalian cells?
A.Oxidative phosphorylation and generation of ATP
B.Synthesis and initial folding of secretory and transmembrane proteins
C.Lipid catabolism and detoxification of lipid-soluble xenobiotics
D.Degradation of unneeded cytosolic proteins via polyubiquitination
Explanation: The rough endoplasmic reticulum possesses surface-bound 80S ribosomes that translocate nascent polypeptide chains into the lumen. These proteins undergo signal peptide cleavage, chaperone-assisted folding, and N-linked core glycosylation.
9Which cellular junction forms an impermeable belt around epithelial cells, preventing the paracellular transit of solutes across tissue barriers?
A.Adherens junctions (zonula adherens)
B.Desmosomes (macula adherens)
C.Gap junctions (nexus)
D.Tight junctions (zonula occludens)
Explanation: Tight junctions (zonula occludens) consist of claudin and occludin transmembrane proteins that fuse adjacent cell membranes near the apical pole. They establish a selective paracellular barrier and preserve epithelial cell polarity.
10During which phase of mitosis do sister chromatids synchronously separate and move toward opposite spindle poles?
A.Prophase
B.Metaphase
C.Anaphase
D.Telophase
Explanation: Anaphase begins when the anaphase-promoting complex triggers the proteolytic cleavage of cohesin complexes by separase. Kinetochore microtubules depolymerize, drawing sister chromatids toward opposite centrosomal poles.

LF UK Medicine Entrance Exam: Suggested Study Strategy

1Practise judging every option as true or false on its own, because the real test can have anywhere from zero to four correct answers per question.
2Remember that a wrongly judged option costs a point, so think twice before marking statements you are unsure about.
3Work through the faculty's published question books in biology and chemistry, which are the standard preparation material.
4Give chemistry the same attention as biology: each counts 42% of the overall result.
5Prepare for the Scio VŠP test as well; it can be repeated, and the best result is sent to the faculty.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the LF UK admission examination consist of?

For 2026/2027 entry it had two parts: the Scio general study aptitude test (VŠP), taken online or in person and repeatable, and the natural sciences test, taken only in person, with 100 biology and 100 chemistry questions in 3 hours. The examination is valid only if both tests are taken, and the result for one study programme cannot be used for the other.

How is the natural sciences test scored?

Each question has four options, and any number of them, from none to all four, may be correct. Every option you mark or leave unmarked correctly earns 1 point, and every option judged wrongly loses 1 point, so each question is worth from -4 to +4 points and the maximum is 800. In the overall result the natural sciences test counts 84% (biology 42%, chemistry 42%) and the VŠP test 16%.

Are bonus points or admission without the examination possible?

Up to 40 bonus points are awarded for results in secondary-school olympiads and competitions (40 for an international round, 30 for a top-10 national place, 25 for a top-3 regional place) or a C1/C2 English certificate (25). For general medicine only, up to 30% of the planned places can go to applicants admitted without the examination, who must meet strict conditions including an average of 1.100 or better.

Is this practice bank an official LF UK test?

No. This is independent practice by OpenExamPrep: an English-language, four-option study adaptation of secondary-school biology and chemistry topics with one correct answer per question. It is not an official test or translation, and it does not reproduce the official format in which each option is judged true or false independently.
