1Under the Slovenian rules on classifying, prescribing and dispensing medicines for human use (Pravilnik o razvrščanju, predpisovanju in izdajanju zdravil za uporabo v humani medicini), how long is an ordinary prescription valid unless another rule sets a different period?
A.14 days from the date of issue
B.30 days from the date of issue
C.60 days from the date of issue
D.90 days from the date of issue
Explanation: Article 35 of the Pravilnik states that a prescription is valid for 30 days from the date of issue unless the Pravilnik, the marketing authorisation or other medicines rules set a different period. The period starts running on the day after the prescription is written. Shorter periods apply to special prescriptions for controlled medicines and, under the ZZZS insurance rules, to antimicrobials for acute illness and urgent prescriptions.
2A patient brings a prescription for an oral antibiotic prescribed for an acute bacterial infection. Under the ZZZS rules for medicines prescribed at the expense of compulsory health insurance, within what period must the medicine be collected?
A.3 days from the day of prescribing
B.7 days from the day of prescribing
C.14 days from the day of prescribing
D.30 days from the day of prescribing
Explanation: ZZZS sets a three-day collection period for an antimicrobial medicine prescribed for an acute illness, counted from the day after the day of prescribing. Treatment of an acute infection should start promptly, so the general 30-day period does not apply. After the deadline the prescription can no longer be dispensed.
3A prescription issued for urgent treatment is marked »nujno zdravljenje!«. Under the ZZZS rules, within what period must the patient collect the medicine?
A.12 hours from the hour of prescribing
B.48 hours from the date of prescribing
C.24 hours from the hour of prescribing
D.3 days from the day after prescribing
Explanation: ZZZS sets a 24-hour collection period for a medicine prescribed for urgent treatment on a prescription marked »nujno zdravljenje!«, and this period runs from the hour of prescribing rather than from the next day. The Pravilnik (Article 31) separately requires the prescriber to mark a prescription with words such as »nujno« or »cito« when the medicine must be dispensed immediately.
4A morphine product (a group II narcotic under ZPPPD) is prescribed on a posebni recept issued in two identical copies, the second marked »kopija«. How long is this special prescription valid?
A.24 hours from the hour of issue
B.3 days from the date of prescribing
C.10 days from the date of prescribing
D.5 days from the date of prescribing
Explanation: Under Article 39(3) of the Pravilnik o razvrščanju, predpisovanju in izdajanju zdravil, a special prescription (posebni recept) and a special order form (posebna naročilnica) are valid for five days from the date of prescribing, counted from the next day. They are used for medicines containing narcotic and psychotropic substances from groups II, IIIa and IIIc of the Zakon o proizvodnji in prometu s prepovedanimi drogami. Both copies carry the serial number from the prescriber's officially sealed record book.
5A patient on long-term therapy receives a repeatable prescription (obnovljivi recept). What validity rules apply to it?
A.Up to 6 months; first dispensing within 14 days of prescribing
B.Up to 1 year; first dispensing within 30 days of prescribing
C.Up to 1 year; first dispensing at any time within that year
D.Up to 2 years; first dispensing within 60 days of prescribing
Explanation: A repeatable prescription is valid for at most one year from the date of prescribing, and ZZZS requires the first dispensing within 30 days of prescribing. Later fills follow the expected next-dispensing date. Once the year has passed the prescription expires even if not all fills were collected.
6A patient taking simvastatin 40 mg daily brings a new prescription for clarithromycin 500 mg twice daily for a chest infection. What is the interaction and the appropriate pharmacist action?
A.Clarithromycin inhibits CYP3A4, raising simvastatin levels and myopathy risk; pause the statin or change the antibiotic
B.Clarithromycin induces P-glycoprotein and so lowers simvastatin absorption; double the statin dose during the course
C.Simvastatin displaces clarithromycin from albumin and raises free antibiotic levels; halve the macrolide dose
D.Simvastatin blocks tubular secretion of clarithromycin; continue both unchanged if the patient drinks more
Explanation: Simvastatin is metabolised mainly by CYP3A4, and clarithromycin is a strong CYP3A4 inhibitor that can raise simvastatin exposure several-fold. The simvastatin SmPC contraindicates use with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors such as clarithromycin because of the risk of myopathy and rhabdomyolysis. The pharmacist should contact the prescriber so that simvastatin is paused for the course or an antibiotic without this interaction (for example azithromycin) is chosen.
7A 72-year-old patient with heart failure takes ramipril 5 mg and spironolactone 25 mg daily and now has a new prescription for potassium chloride 1000 mg twice daily. Which risk should the pharmacist raise with the prescriber?
A.Hypokalaemia, because ramipril and spironolactone increase potassium loss
B.Hyponatraemia and confusion, because all three drugs cause sodium loss
C.Hyperkalaemia from additive potassium retention plus supplementation
D.Severe hypotension from alpha-1 blockade caused by potassium chloride
Explanation: ACE inhibitors and aldosterone antagonists both reduce renal potassium excretion. Adding a potassium supplement in an elderly patient, whose renal function is often reduced, can cause dangerous hyperkalaemia and arrhythmias. The pharmacist should query the supplement unless documented hypokalaemia is being closely monitored.
8A patient taking oral methotrexate 15 mg once weekly for rheumatoid arthritis asks to buy ibuprofen 400 mg for tension headaches. Why should the pharmacist advise against self-selected ibuprofen and suggest paracetamol instead?
A.Ibuprofen induces hepatic metabolism of methotrexate, so arthritis control is lost
B.Ibuprofen and methotrexate together cause leukocytosis by stimulating the marrow
C.Methotrexate blocks platelet COX, so ibuprofen's GI effect doubles with no PK change
D.NSAIDs reduce renal methotrexate clearance, raising the risk of marrow toxicity
Explanation: NSAIDs reduce renal prostaglandin-dependent blood flow and compete with methotrexate for renal tubular secretion. This can reduce methotrexate elimination and raise its levels, increasing the risk of myelosuppression, mucositis and other toxicity. Paracetamol does not share this interaction and is the usual choice for occasional headache in such patients.
9No veterinary medicine is authorised in Slovenia for a dog's condition. Under Article 112 of Regulation (EU) 2019/6 on veterinary medicinal products (applied since 28 January 2022), in what order may the veterinarian choose alternatives for this non-food-producing animal?
A.A human medicine; then a veterinary medicine authorised in another EU state; then an extemporaneous preparation
B.A veterinary medicine authorised in Slovenia or another EU state; then a human medicine; then an extemporaneous preparation
C.A veterinary medicine authorised in Slovenia for another species; then an extemporaneous preparation; then a human medicine
D.A veterinary medicine authorised in a third country; then a human medicine; then an extemporaneous preparation
Explanation: Article 112(1) of Regulation (EU) 2019/6 lets the responsible veterinarian use, in order: (a) a veterinary medicine authorised in the Member State or in another Member State for the same or another species and the same or another indication; (b) if none exists, a human medicine authorised in the EU; (c) if none exists, an extemporaneously prepared veterinary medicine made to a veterinary prescription. A third-country veterinary medicine is only a final fallback after these options. Community pharmacists meet the cascade when they dispense human medicines or prepare magistral veterinary preparations on a veterinary prescription.
10A prescription gives the dosing only as »po navodilu« (as directed), and the pharmacist cannot reach the prescriber to clarify it. What does the Pravilnik o razvrščanju, predpisovanju in izdajanju zdravil allow the pharmacist to dispense?
A.Only the smallest pack of the medicine, recording this on the prescription
B.The largest pack, so the patient does not run out before the next visit
C.Nothing at all; the prescription must be returned to the patient unfilled
D.A one-month supply worked out from the usual adult dose in the SmPC
Explanation: Article 52 of the Pravilnik deals with inappropriately written dosing such as »po navodilu« or »po potrebi«. If the pharmacist cannot agree the dosing with the prescriber, only one smallest pack of the medicine may be dispensed, and the dispensing details are marked on the prescription. Article 53 similarly requires the smallest effective strength and smallest pack when strength or pack size is missing.

Slovenia Pharmacist Licensing Exam: Suggested Study Strategy

1Master Slovenian prescription validity rules: 30 days for most prescriptions (counted from the day after issue), 3 days for antimicrobials for acute illness, 24 hours from the hour of issue for prescriptions marked »nujno zdravljenje!«, 5 days for special prescriptions, and up to 1 year for repeatable prescriptions with the first fill within 30 days.
2Practise compounding calculations: displacement factors for suppositories, sodium chloride equivalents for isotonic eye drops, and mass-based ethanol dilutions, and know why unpreserved aqueous preparations get short use periods.
3Know the difference between a pregled uporabe zdravil (PUZ), done by any licensed magister farmacije, and a farmakoterapijski pregled (FTP), done by a farmacevt svetovalec with a clinical or community pharmacy specialisation.
4Rehearse the ERC Guidelines 2025: call 112 for any unresponsive person, 30:2 CPR in adults, 5 initial breaths then 15:2 for children if trained, and intramuscular adrenaline for anaphylaxis (paediatric auto-injector 0.15 mg).
5Study patient rights under ZPacP (access to records within five working days, advance directives, the patient rights representative) and pharmacist duties under ZLD-1, including the ban on conscientious objection in dispensing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Strokovni izpit za poklic magister farmacije?

It is the statutory professional examination for pharmacists in Slovenia. ZZDej Article 64 makes it a condition for independent work, and under PRAV14684 Article 10(4) it is taken at the University of Ljubljana Faculty of Pharmacy (UL FFA). After passing, ZLD-1 requires six months of supervised strokovno uvajanje before Lekarniška zbornica Slovenije grants the licence for independent work in a pharmacy.

What is the official format of the exam and how is it scored?

Under PRAV14684 Article 14, the examination is oral, lasting up to 30 minutes per content across four contents: (1) professional pharmacy practice, (2) selected topics in emergency medical care, (3) basics of healthcare quality and safety, and (4) basics of the legal regulation of health care. The commission has one examiner per content and grades each content »opravil« (pass) or »ni opravil« (fail). Each content requires at least 75%, and only failed contents are repeated.

Who is eligible to take the examination?

Candidates must hold a degree in pharmacy (magister farmacije / magistra farmacije) from an integrated 5-year master's curriculum or an equivalent recognized foreign credential. Under PRAV14684 Article 11(4), graduates whose 5-year curriculum included at least 6 months of practical training in a community or hospital pharmacy do not need to submit the apprenticeship log (List pripravnika). UL FFA students submit the registration form for the final module to the student office together with their master's thesis defence application.

How many examination attempts are permitted and what is the retake rule?

Under PRAV14684 Article 18, a candidate may sit the examination a maximum of five times, and each sitting of an individual content counts as an attempt. If a candidate passes some contents and fails others, only the failed contents are repeated. Candidates may withdraw up to 7 days before the examination date; otherwise a missed sitting is recorded as failed unless an excusable reason is proven within 3 days after the date.

In what language is the exam held?

The examination is conducted in Slovenian. PRAV14684 Article 15 allows an interpreter, at the candidate's cost, only for candidates who completed their studies in Slovenia in another language. According to the Ministry of Health, a magister farmacije working in direct contact with patients needs Slovenian at C1 level (B2 for writing), and until 31 December 2027 B2 is accepted.

How does OpenExamPrep's question bank relate to the official exam?

This resource is an independent English-language MCQ study adaptation created by OpenExamPrep to help pharmacy candidates review Slovenian pharmacy practice, emergency protocols, quality systems, and health law. It is not an official translation, does not simulate the oral format, and is not affiliated with or endorsed by UL FFA, Lekarniška zbornica Slovenije, or the Slovenian Ministry of Health.
