This independent bank is an English-language MCQ study adaptation; it supports, but cannot replace, essay-writing practice in Russian.

1Under standard arrangements, how much time do participants have to write the Final Essay (итоговое сочинение)?
A.3 hours (180 minutes)
B.3 hours 30 minutes (210 minutes)
C.3 hours 55 minutes (235 minutes)
D.4 hours 30 minutes (270 minutes)
Explanation: Rosobrnadzor's procedure and FIPI materials set 3 hours 55 minutes (235 minutes) for the итоговое сочинение (изложение). Time spent on the briefing and on filling in the registration fields is not counted. Participants with ОВЗ, children with disabilities and some students on home or medical schooling may receive 1.5 extra hours.
2Under Requirement No. 1 («Объём итогового сочинения»), below what length does an essay automatically receive «незачёт» for the work as a whole?
A.Fewer than 250 words
B.Fewer than 150 words
C.Fewer than 300 words
D.Fewer than 350 words
Explanation: If an essay has fewer than 250 words (all words count, including function words), it receives «незачёт» for Requirement No. 1 and for the whole work. Such an essay is not checked for independence or against the five criteria. FIPI recommends 350 or more words and sets no maximum.
3An essay contains the expressions «всё-таки», «всё же», «М.Ю. Лермонтов» and «5 лет». Under FIPI's word-counting rules, how many words do these four expressions contribute in total?
A.7
B.6
C.4
D.5
Explanation: FIPI counts any sequence written without a space as one word, so «всё-таки» is one word and «всё же» is two. Initials with a surname count as one word, so «М.Ю. Лермонтов» is one word. Digits are not counted, so «5 лет» is one word. The total is 1 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 5.
4An expert finds that a substantial passage of an essay was copied from a published model essay. What follows under Requirement No. 2 («Самостоятельность написания итогового сочинения»)?
A.Criterion No. 4 is failed, but the other criteria are still checked
B.«Незачёт» for Requirement No. 2 and for the whole work; no criteria are checked
C.The copied passage is ignored and only the remaining words are assessed
D.The essay is checked only against Criteria No. 1 and No. 2
Explanation: Copying an essay or fragments of one from any source, or reproducing someone else's text from memory, is not allowed. An essay judged not independent receives «незачёт» for Requirement No. 2 and for the work as a whole, and it is not checked against the criteria.
5Which use of quotation does Requirement No. 2 allow?
A.Unattributed quotations, provided each is in quotation marks
B.Any amount of quotation once the essay exceeds 350 words
C.Attributed quotation not exceeding the length of one's own text
D.A memorised model essay, provided some words are changed
Explanation: Direct or indirect quotation is allowed with a reference to the source, and the reference can be given in free form. The quoted material must not exceed the volume of the participant's own text. Reproducing another person's essay from memory is treated as a lack of independence.
6Which two criteria are designated as the main (основные) criteria of the Final Essay?
A.Criteria 1 (theme) and 3 (composition)
B.Criteria 2 (argumentation) and 5 (literacy)
C.Criteria 4 (written speech) and 5 (literacy)
D.Criteria 1 (theme) and 2 (argumentation)
Explanation: FIPI names Criterion No. 1 «Соответствие теме» and Criterion No. 2 «Аргументация. Привлечение литературного материала» as the main criteria. A «незачёт» on either one automatically means «незачёт» for the whole essay.
7Both requirements are met. Which pattern of criterion results earns «зачёт» for the whole essay?
A.Criteria 1, 2 and 4 passed; Criteria 3 and 5 failed
B.Criteria 1, 3, 4 and 5 passed; Criterion 2 failed
C.Criteria 2, 3, 4 and 5 passed; Criterion 1 failed
D.Criteria 1 and 2 passed; Criteria 3, 4 and 5 failed
Explanation: To pass, the essay needs «зачёт» on Criteria No. 1 and No. 2 plus «зачёт» on at least one other criterion. Passing Criteria 1, 2 and 4 satisfies this, even though Criteria 3 and 5 are failed.
8Criterion No. 5 («Грамотность») is failed when an essay contains, on average per 100 words, …
A.more than three grammatical, spelling and punctuation errors combined
B.more than five grammatical, spelling and punctuation errors combined
C.more than five spelling errors, with punctuation counted separately
D.more than ten grammatical, spelling and punctuation errors combined
Explanation: Criterion No. 5 gives «незачёт» if, on average, there are more than five errors per 100 words, counting grammatical, spelling and punctuation errors together. Minor (негрубые) errors are not counted, and the rules on repeated errors apply.
9A 340-word essay contains 7 spelling, 8 punctuation and 3 grammatical errors, none of them minor or repeated. What is the result for Criterion No. 5?
A.«Зачёт», because only spelling and punctuation errors are counted
B.«Зачёт», because 18 errors is fewer than 20
C.«Незачёт», because 18 errors exceed the 17 allowed for 340 words
D.«Незачёт», because any essay with more than 15 errors fails
Explanation: All three error types are added: 7 + 8 + 3 = 18. For 340 words, the limit of five errors per 100 words gives 3.4 × 5 = 17. Eighteen is more than five per 100 words on average, so Criterion No. 5 receives «незачёт». The essay as a whole can still pass if Criteria 1 and 2 and Criterion 3 or 4 are passed.
10An essay contains the phrases «играть значение» and «первый дебют». Under which criterion are such errors assessed?
A.Criterion No. 5, as grammatical errors
B.Criterion No. 1, as a departure from the theme
C.Criterion No. 3, as logical errors
D.Criterion No. 4, as speech errors
Explanation: Both are speech (lexical) errors: «играть значение» breaks lexical collocation (correct forms are «играть роль» or «иметь значение»), and «первый дебют» is a pleonasm. They are considered under Criterion No. 4 «Качество письменной речи». That criterion is failed only if low speech quality substantially hinders understanding.

Final Essay (Итоговое сочинение): Suggested Study Strategy

1Always clearly formulate your central thesis in the introduction directly answering the selected prompt question.
2Support your thesis with at least one substantive literary work; analyze the characters and author's position rather than merely retelling the plot.
3Check word count and allocate at least 30 minutes at the end of the 235-minute sitting for proofreading spelling and punctuation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum word count for the Final Essay?

The strict minimum is 250 words under Requirement 1. If an essay has 249 words or fewer (including all service words), it receives an automatic 'незачёт' (fail) without criterion evaluation. The recommended length is 350 or more words.

How is the Final Essay evaluated?

Grading is pass/fail (зачёт/незачёт). The essay must meet Requirement 1 (at least 250 words) and Requirement 2 (independent authorship). It then needs «зачёт» on Criterion 1 (relevance to the topic) and Criterion 2 (argumentation with literary material), plus at least one of Criteria 3 (composition and logic), 4 (quality of written speech) or 5 (literacy, failed above five errors per 100 words on average).

Are these practice questions actual essay prompts?

No. The official examination requires writing a full essay in Russian. These multiple-choice questions are an independent English-language study adaptation for practising topic analysis, choosing literary evidence, structuring an argument and applying FIPI's criteria; they are not official topics or an essay simulation.

What is the итоговое изложение?

It is a detailed written retelling of a source text that only specified categories may choose, such as students with ОВЗ or disabilities and students in closed institutions. It has its own criteria: at least 150 words (200 recommended), and literacy fails above ten errors per 100 words.
