1Calculate the value of the numerical expression: 1/4 + 7/20. Express your answer as a decimal.
A.0.55
B.0.6
C.0.65
D.0.7
Explanation: To add fractions with different denominators, find the least common denominator. The least common multiple of 4 and 20 is 20. Convert 1/4 into twentieths: 1/4 = 5/20. Now add: 5/20 + 7/20 = 12/20. Simplify by dividing the numerator and denominator by 4: 12/20 = 3/5. As a decimal, 3/5 = 0.6.
2Evaluate the numerical expression: 4.8 - 1.6 * (-3).
A.-9.6
B.0
C.9.6
D.3.2
Explanation: Follow the standard order of operations (multiplication before subtraction). First multiply: 1.6 * (-3) = -4.8. Then subtract: 4.8 - (-4.8) = 4.8 + 4.8 = 9.6.
3Simplify the algebraic expression with powers: (a^5 * a^3) / a^6 for a != 0.
A.a^2
B.a^4
C.a^3
D.a^8
Explanation: Apply the laws of exponents: when multiplying powers with the same base, add their exponents: a^5 * a^3 = a^(5+3) = a^8. When dividing powers with the same base, subtract the exponent of the denominator: a^8 / a^6 = a^(8-6) = a^2.
4Find the sum of the rational numbers: (-5/12) + (7/18).
A.-1/6
B.1/36
C.-1/18
D.-1/36
Explanation: Find the least common denominator of 12 and 18, which is 36. Convert both fractions: -5/12 = -15/36 and 7/18 = 14/36. Add the numerators: -15/36 + 14/36 = (-15 + 14)/36 = -1/36.
5Write the decimal number 0.0054 in standard scientific notation (a * 10^n, where 1 <= a < 10).
A.54 * 10^-4
B.0.54 * 10^-2
C.5.4 * 10^-4
D.5.4 * 10^-3
Explanation: To write 0.0054 in scientific notation, move the decimal point 3 positions to the right so that the coefficient is 5.4 (which satisfies 1 <= 5.4 < 10). Shifting 3 places to the right requires multiplying by 10^-3: 5.4 * 10^-3.
6Calculate the exact numerical value of the expression: sqrt(18) * sqrt(2).
A.6
B.36
C.3 * sqrt(2)
D.12
Explanation: Use the property of radicals sqrt(a) * sqrt(b) = sqrt(a * b) for non-negative numbers: sqrt(18) * sqrt(2) = sqrt(18 * 2) = sqrt(36) = 6.
7Find the value of the quadratic polynomial 3x^2 - 2x + 5 when x = -2.
A.13
B.17
C.21
D.25
Explanation: Substitute x = -2 into the expression: 3*(-2)^2 - 2*(-2) + 5 = 3*(4) + 4 + 5 = 12 + 4 + 5 = 21.
8Calculate the value of the square root: sqrt(49/64). Express the result as a decimal.
A.0.75
B.0.875
C.0.825
D.0.775
Explanation: Take the square root of the numerator and denominator separately: sqrt(49/64) = sqrt(49) / sqrt(64) = 7/8. To convert 7/8 to a decimal: 7 / 8 = 0.875.
9Calculate the exact numerical value of the expression: (3*sqrt(5) - 2) * (3*sqrt(5) + 2).
A.49
B.43
C.37
D.41
Explanation: Use the difference of squares formula (a - b)(a + b) = a^2 - b^2. Here a = 3*sqrt(5) and b = 2. Compute a^2 = (3*sqrt(5))^2 = 3^2 * 5 = 9 * 5 = 45. Compute b^2 = 2^2 = 4. Therefore, 45 - 4 = 41.
10Perform the division of fractions: (5/8) / (15/16). Express the result in simplest form.
A.2/3
B.3/2
C.75/128
D.5/6
Explanation: To divide by a fraction, multiply by its reciprocal: (5/8) / (15/16) = (5/8) * (16/15). Cancel common factors: 5 and 15 reduce to 1 and 3; 16 and 8 reduce to 2 and 1. Thus, (1 * 2) / (1 * 3) = 2/3.

About the GVE-9 Exam

Independent practice for Russia's State Graduation Exam for Grade 9 (ГВЭ-9), the GIA-9 route for students with ОВЗ or disabilities and students in closed or penal institutions. This is an English-language MCQ study adaptation, not an official translation, an official paper or a simulation of the written exams. Its 100 reviewed questions cover basic mathematics, Russian grammar and punctuation, and the exposition and creative-task criteria.

Exam sponsor: Rosobrnadzor (Federal Service for Supervision in Education and Science) / FIPI. The requirements and fees below concern the certification or admission exam, separate from our free practice resources.

Assessment

Compulsory subjects are Russian and mathematics, each 235 minutes in written form. Mathematics has 14, 12 or 10 tasks depending on the variant series (100/200/300). Russian is usually a compressed exposition with a creative task (ИК1–ИК3, СК1–СК3 and literacy, maximum 17 points); other forms are complicated copying (500-series) and dictation (600-series). Rosobrnadzor's 25 February 2026 letter recommends the grade scales.

Time Limit

235 minutes per written examination; standard accommodation adds 1.5 hours

Passing Score

Grade «3»: Russian, at least 5 of 17 primary points; mathematics, at least 4 points (100- and 200-series) or 3 points (300-series), under Rosobrnadzor's 25 February 2026 recommendations; regional authorities approve the final scales.

Exam / Certification Fees

No examination fee: Part 8 of Article 59 of Federal Law No. 273-FZ prohibits charging students for state final certification (ГИА).

GVE-9: Suggested Study Strategy

1Review foundational operations with fractions, decimals, and negative numbers to secure initial correct answers in the first 4 math tasks.
2Practice identifying sentence parts and distinguishing homogeneous predicates from compound sentences to master Russian punctuation rules.
3Check the specific variant series (100, 200, or 300) recommended by your educational commission to focus on the exact task structure you will face.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between 100, 200, and 300 series variants in GVE-9?

FIPI provides different written mathematics papers: the 100-series (14 tasks) for most participants, the 200-series (12 tasks) for blind and visually impaired students, and the 300-series (10 tasks) for students with mental developmental delay on adapted programmes and some students with musculoskeletal impairments. The psychological-medical-pedagogical commission (ПМПК) may recommend a series.

What primary score is needed to pass GVE-9 mathematics?

Under Rosobrnadzor's 25 February 2026 recommendations, grade «3» requires at least 4 primary points on the 100- and 200-series papers and at least 3 points on the 300-series paper. Regional education authorities approve the final conversion scales.

Does GVE-9 include an oral examination option?

Yes. While the standard administration is written, an oral examination format with subject-specific prompt cards and distinct federal scoring recommendations is officially established for eligible participants based on PMPK medical-pedagogical commission determinations.
