B.A live skills demonstration before an APT review panel
C.Portfolio review of licensure, education, supervised hours, and supervision documentation
D.Completion of a single capstone dissertation approved by APT
Explanation: RPT is a portfolio-based credential. Applicants submit documentation of their active mental health license, 150 hours of play therapy instruction, 350 direct play therapy client-contact hours, and 35 hours of play therapy supervision by an RPT-S (plus 5 session observations). APT reviews the packet — there is no proctored exam.
2Which of the following is NOT a qualifying master's-level licensure field for the RPT credential?
A.Licensed Professional Counselor
B.Licensed Clinical Social Worker
C.Licensed Nurse Practitioner (non-psych)
D.Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
Explanation: APT requires an active state license in counseling, psychology, psychiatry, marriage and family therapy, or social work. A non-psychiatric nurse practitioner license is not within APT's accepted mental health scopes of practice.
3How many clock hours of play therapy instruction does APT require for RPT applicants?
A.50 hours
B.100 hours
C.150 hours
D.200 hours
Explanation: APT requires a minimum of 150 clock hours of play therapy instruction. Effective April 1, 2025, at least 75 of those hours must be earned through in-person (or live synchronous) contact training.
4How many direct play therapy client-contact hours are required for the RPT?
A.100 hours
B.350 hours
C.1,000 hours
D.2,000 hours
Explanation: The RPT requires a minimum of 350 direct play therapy client-contact hours. These must be accrued after licensure and documented with a supervisor.
5Who may provide the required play therapy supervision for an RPT applicant?
A.Any licensed mental health professional
B.A Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor (RPT-S)
C.Any APT member in good standing
D.A doctoral-level psychologist, regardless of play therapy training
Explanation: Play therapy supervision for the RPT must be provided by an approved RPT-S (Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor). The supervisor's specialty credential — not just licensure — is what qualifies them.
6Who is widely credited with developing non-directive, child-centered play therapy and writing the 8 basic principles for therapists?
A.Anna Freud
B.Melanie Klein
C.Virginia Axline
D.Charles Schaefer
Explanation: Virginia Axline translated Carl Rogers' person-centered theory into play therapy and articulated the 8 basic principles (build rapport, accept the child, permissive climate, reflect feelings, respect, let the child lead, don't rush, set only necessary limits) in her 1947 book Play Therapy.
7Who founded the Center for Play Therapy at the University of North Texas and is considered the leading modern proponent of Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT)?
A.Garry Landreth
B.Terry Kottman
C.Eliana Gil
D.Viola Brody
Explanation: Garry Landreth founded the UNT Center for Play Therapy and is the most prominent modern voice of CCPT. His book Play Therapy: The Art of the Relationship operationalized Axline's principles into concrete skills like the A-C-T limit-setting model and therapist 'Be With' attitudes.
8Charles Schaefer is best known for articulating which organizing framework in play therapy?
A.The four phases of Adlerian play therapy
B.The therapeutic powers of play
C.The Marschak Interaction Method
D.The 8 basic principles of the therapist
Explanation: Charles Schaefer — often called the 'father of play therapy' in the US — organized and expanded the Therapeutic Powers of Play, a framework of 20 core change agents (co-edited with Drewes, 2014) grouped into four categories: facilitates communication, fosters emotional wellness, enhances social relationships, and increases personal strengths.
9The four categories of the Therapeutic Powers of Play (Schaefer & Drewes) are:
A.Cognitive, Behavioral, Emotional, Social
B.Facilitates Communication, Fosters Emotional Wellness, Enhances Social Relationships, Increases Personal Strengths
C.Structure, Engagement, Nurture, Challenge
D.Rapport, Lifestyle, Insight, Reorientation
Explanation: Schaefer & Drewes organized the 20 core therapeutic powers of play into four categories: (1) Facilitates Communication, (2) Fosters Emotional Wellness, (3) Enhances Social Relationships, and (4) Increases Personal Strengths.
10Which of Axline's 8 basic principles is often summarized as 'follow the child's lead'?
A.The therapist accepts the child completely
B.The therapist is responsible for initiating the direction of conversation and action
C.The therapist allows the child to lead the way; the therapist follows
D.The therapist should maintain a sense of the therapeutic process
Explanation: Axline's principle that 'The child leads the way; the therapist follows' is the non-directive cornerstone of CCPT. The therapist does not steer content, plan activities, or assign meaning.

RPT Study Tips from Top Performers

1Remember: RPT is a portfolio credential — your application packet, not a test score, decides approval. Keep detailed logs from day one.
2Know the 20 therapeutic powers of play (Schaefer & Drewes, 2014) — they show up in almost every play therapy conceptual question.
3Master the A-C-T limit-setting model (Acknowledge, Communicate, Target) — this is the single most-tested technique from Landreth's CCPT.
4Understand the difference between directive (Adlerian, CBPT, Theraplay) and non-directive (CCPT, Jungian sandtray) approaches and when each is indicated.
5Review APT's Paper on Play Therapy Best Practices (2022 update) for ethics, documentation, telehealth, and informed-consent/assent standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the RPT an exam?

No. The RPT (Registered Play Therapist) is a portfolio-based credential from the Association for Play Therapy (APT) — there is no proctored multiple-choice exam. APT reviews documentation of your mental health license, 150 hours of play therapy education, 350 direct play therapy client-contact hours, and 35 hours of play therapy supervision (plus 5 session observations). Our 100 practice questions are a free knowledge self-assessment — not a mock exam.

What are the 2026 RPT requirements?

For 2026, the RPT requires: (1) an active state license in counseling, psychology, psychiatry, marriage and family therapy, or social work; (2) a master's degree from an accredited institution in one of those fields; (3) 150 clock hours of play therapy instruction (at least 75 in-person after April 1, 2025); (4) 350 direct play therapy client-contact hours; (5) 35 hours of play therapy supervision by an RPT-S plus 5 session observations.

How much does the RPT application cost?

As of 2026, the RPT application fee is $140 for APT members and $270 for non-members. Renewal is $60 for members and $150 for non-members. Fees are nonrefundable and can change — confirm current amounts on a4pt.org before applying.

How is the RPT renewed?

RPT renewal is every 36 months (3 years). You must earn at least 24 clock hours of postgraduate play therapy continuing education during that period — 22 hours in play therapy topics and 2 hours in cultural and social diversity. You must also maintain your underlying mental health license in good standing.

Who can become an RPT?

Only licensed mental health professionals with a master's degree or higher in counseling, psychology, psychiatry, marriage and family therapy, or social work can earn the RPT. Play therapy is considered a specialty practice layered on top of an existing scope of practice — APT does not credential unlicensed practitioners.

What's the difference between RPT and RPT-S?

RPT (Registered Play Therapist) is the core clinical credential. RPT-S (School-Based Registered Play Therapist Supervisor) is an advanced credential for RPTs who want to supervise others; it requires additional supervision-of-supervision training and at least 5 years of post-licensure clinical practice. You must hold the RPT first — RPT-S cannot be earned directly.

How do I prepare for the RPT application?

Track your play therapy education hours, direct client-contact hours, and supervision hours from the start — APT requires detailed logs. Build relationships early with an RPT-S supervisor. Use these 100 self-assessment questions to identify weak areas in play therapy theory, ethics, and technique so you can seek targeted CE.
