OpenExamPrep provides independent English-language MCQ study adaptation at this practice URL, not an official translation or an official-format simulation. These questions do not replace medical checks, oral testing where required, or practical vehicle-control and on-road training and assessment. Confirm local age, experience, fees and test instructions before applying.

Sample PSV Driving Theory Practice Questions

Try these sample questions to review concepts for the PSV Driving Theory exam. Each question includes a detailed explanation. Start the interactive quiz above for the full 50+ question experience with AI tutoring.

1A circular sign with a red border displays a goods truck. Which restriction does that symbol communicate?
A.No entry for all motor vehicles
B.No entry for goods vehicles
C.No entry for buses only
D.No overtaking by goods vehicles
Explanation: The vehicle symbol identifies the class whose entry is prohibited. A goods-truck symbol means goods vehicles are prohibited; it does not by itself prohibit every motor vehicle or describe an overtaking restriction.
2At a junction, a bus driver faces a blue circular sign with a white arrow bending left. Which movement does it require?
A.Turn left
B.Keep left of an obstruction while continuing ahead
C.Continue ahead or turn left
D.Avoid turning left
Explanation: The bending left arrow gives a compulsory turning direction. It differs from a diagonal keep-left arrow and from a sign showing a choice between straight ahead and left.
3A red-bordered warning triangle shows children walking. What hazard should a passenger-van driver anticipate?
A.A pedestrian-only street closed to vehicles
B.A mandatory passenger boarding point
C.A school area where children may enter the road
D.A compulsory stop for every vehicle
Explanation: The children symbol warns of a school-related pedestrian hazard. Reduce speed and watch for children whose movements may be difficult to predict.
4A bus approaches a downward-pointing red-bordered triangle at a junction. How should the driver interpret it?
A.Stop on every approach even when the road is clear
B.Claim priority over traffic on the intersecting road
C.Give priority only to vehicles larger than the bus
D.Give way to traffic with priority, stopping when necessary
Explanation: The inverted triangle is a Give Way sign. Slow enough to assess conflicting traffic and stop if necessary before entering the priority road.
5The road appears empty as a coach reaches a STOP sign and stop line. What is required?
A.Slow to walking speed and continue after checking
B.Stop completely before the line, then proceed when safe
C.Stop only if another vehicle is visible
D.Stop beyond the line to shorten the crossing
Explanation: A STOP sign requires a complete stop even when no conflicting vehicle is immediately visible. Stop before the line, assess the junction, and move only when safe.
6A circular sign depicts a horn crossed by a red diagonal line. Which instruction should the driver recognize?
A.Use of the horn is prohibited
B.Sound the horn before the next bend
C.The horn restriction ends here
D.Only air horns are prohibited
Explanation: The crossed horn symbol means that horn use is prohibited in the signed area. The symbol is not limited to the air horn fitted to a heavy bus.
7A blue information sign displays a white letter 'P'. What facility does it identify?
A.A police checkpoint
B.A pedestrian-only area
C.A parking area
D.A prohibition on parking
Explanation: The white P on a blue information sign identifies parking. A driver must still check any accompanying conditions, including restrictions on vehicle class or time.
8A bus follows a slow vehicle on a two-way road with a broken white centre line. What does the marking permit?
A.Overtaking whenever the vehicle ahead is slower
B.Crossing only to turn into a side road
C.Crossing only after the vehicle ahead signals permission
D.Crossing when safe and when other signs and rules permit
Explanation: A broken centre line may be crossed when it is safe to do so. It does not override a no-overtaking sign, inadequate visibility, or approaching traffic.
9A passenger van enters a road signed with '50' inside a red-bordered circle. What does the number mean?
A.A maximum speed of 50 km/h
B.A minimum speed of 50 km/h
C.A recommended speed that may be exceeded
D.A restriction applying only to goods vehicles
Explanation: The red-bordered circular speed sign sets a maximum of 50 km/h. Conditions may require a lower speed; the limit is not a target that must be maintained.
10A coach measures 4.7 m high including its roof load. A bridge approach has a height-limit sign of 4.5 m. What should the driver do?
A.Proceed slowly because the excess is only 0.2 m
B.Proceed if the bus fits within the road width
C.Stop before the restriction and use a suitable alternative route
D.Let passengers out and proceed with the roof load unchanged
Explanation: The coach's total height exceeds the posted limit by 0.2 m. Reducing speed or removing passengers does not remove the roof-height conflict, so the driver must avoid the restricted structure.

  • NHMP DLA Rules with amendments — PSV eligibility and testing · Source checked 2026-10-07Published rules: PSV minimum age 25; category-specific prior licensing under Rule 12; medical and driving examinations; general theory 20 questions in 10 minutes, with 9/10 signs and 7/10 rules; practical Parts I and II. These are NHMP provisions, not provincial defaults.
  • NHMP live self-assessment instructions — General versus CE · Source checked 2026-10-07English and Urdu are selectable. General: 20 questions, with 9/10 in each section. CE: 35 questions, with 9/10 signs and 18/25 rules. The general rules threshold conflicts with the published rules and booklet; confirm actual PSV sitting instructions. CE figures must not be presented as PSV figures.
  • Government of Pakistan, Ministry of Communications — National Guidelines for Driver Licensing (June 2019; mirrored copy) · Source checked 2026-10-07Government-published primary report, Annex 1, printed page 58, explicitly describes NHMP computer theory testing in Urdu or English with an audio option. The current NHMP self-assessment retains both languages. This does not verify every province's PSV appointment language or turn the report's recommendations into current law.
  • NHMP English theoretical study booklet · Source checked 2026-10-07Official study scope: traffic signs, rules and road-user responsibilities. Content checked includes sign meanings, road markings, fog, overtaking, motorway exits, fire response and downhill brake heating. The older booklet states 9/10 signs and 7/10 rules.
  • NHMP practical driving test guide, Parts I and II · Source checked 2026-10-07Includes inspection, cockpit drill, reversing, shape tests, on-road observation and control; additional shapes are specified for LTV-PSV. Rule 203 allows authority-specified extinguisher conditions; it does not establish the generator's nationwide ABC requirement.
  • Provincial Motor Vehicles Ordinance, 1965 — official police-hosted compilation · Source checked 2026-10-07The PDF contains Punjab provisions: PSV definition, licensing, transport permits, fitness, running-board passengers, and unmanned-crossing safeguards. PSV Driving Theory: Suggested Study Strategy

1Use the official material for your issuing authority and exact PSV category, and confirm any conflicting test instructions before the appointment.
2Practise identifying the sign's instruction before deciding how a long passenger vehicle can comply safely.
3Study Punjab-labelled legal questions as Punjab provisions; check the applicable local rules if applying elsewhere.
4Keep registration, operating permits, fitness certification and personal driving authorization distinct.
5Use these MCQs alongside supervised vehicle-control, shape-test and on-road practice. Prepare separately for any required oral assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there one nationwide PSV theory test with one pass mark?

The reviewed sources do not establish one uniform PSV-only paper. NHMP's published rules and theory booklet describe 20 general questions in 10 minutes, with 9/10 signs and 7/10 rules. Its live general self-assessment instead displays 9/10 in both sections. DLS Sindh publishes 25 general theory questions with 18 correct required. Confirm actual PSV sitting instructions with the issuing authority; the NHMP CE category's 35-question format is separate.

What age and prior experience are required for PSV?

Requirements depend on the authority and category. NHMP's published rules set a PSV minimum age of 25 and category-specific prior licensing, with medical and driving examinations. CTP Rawalpindi describes PSV issuance after one year of LTV/HTV licensing. Do not treat a general commercial or HTV minimum age as proof of eligibility for every PSV endorsement.

Which assessment languages are confirmed?

The Ministry of Communications' June 2019 National Guidelines for Driver Licensing explicitly describes NHMP theory testing in Urdu or English. NHMP's current self-assessment and study material also offer both. English and Urdu are therefore recorded for the confirmed NHMP route; confirm language availability for the actual PSV appointment, as every provincial sitting's options are not established. This OpenExamPrep bank uses English at one unchanged practice URL.

Does this bank simulate the practical or oral driving assessment?

No. It is independent English-language MCQ study adaptation, not an official translation or an official-format simulation. NHMP requires practical driving components, and DLS Sindh also lists written and oral testing and a road test. MCQs can help study safety and decisions but do not replace supervised driving, oral preparation or the official assessments.

How much does a PSV application cost?

There is no single fee established for all authorities. DLS Sindh's published table lists a PKR 500 PSV charge with other charges separate. Punjab DLIMS places its PKR 1,850 LTV+PSV entry in the renewal table, so it must not be used as a theory-test fee. Obtain the current category-specific payable total from your licensing authority.

How was the practice topic split chosen?

NHMP's published general theory structure divides questions equally between signs and rules. This bank therefore gives half its questions to signs and markings, with the other half covering driving decisions, passenger duties and vehicle safety. The smaller topic percentages describe this independent study bank; no nationwide PSV blueprint with those percentages was found.
