1What civil aviation rule part governs Air Transport Operations for Large Aeroplanes (more than 9 passenger seats or over 5,700 kg MCTOW) in Papua New Guinea?
A.PNG CAR Part 91
B.PNG CAR Part 121
C.PNG CAR Part 135
D.PNG CAR Part 145
Explanation: PNG CAR Part 121 prescribes the rules for Air Transport Operations conducted in large aeroplanes (aeroplanes having a passenger seating configuration of more than 9 seats or a maximum certificated takeoff weight exceeding 5,700 kg).
2Under PNG CAR Part 121, what dispatch requirement applies to a large aeroplane fuel supply for an IFR flight to a destination aerodrome where an alternate is required?
A.Fuel to fly to destination, execute approach and missed approach, fly to alternate, plus 45 minutes reserve at normal cruising speed
B.Fuel to destination plus 15 minutes reserve
C.Fuel to destination plus 30 minutes reserve only
D.Fuel to destination with no reserve if flying in daylight
Explanation: Under CAR Part 121.217, an IFR large aeroplane must carry sufficient fuel to fly from departure to destination, carry out an approach and missed approach, fly to the required alternate, and then fly for at least 45 minutes at normal cruising consumption.
3Under PNG CAR Part 121, when MUST a destination alternate aerodrome be specified in the operational flight plan for an IFR airline flight?
A.Destination alternate is mandatory for all IFR flights unless specific isolated aerodrome fuel island rules apply or destination weather is forecast to be well above alternate minima
B.Destination alternates are required only on international flights
C.Destination alternates are required only for single-engine jets
D.Destination alternates are never required if an autopilot is fitted
Explanation: Under CAR Part 121.203, a destination alternate must be specified in the flight plan unless destination weather for 1 hour before and after ETA is forecast to be well above specified visual minima or isolated aerodrome procedures apply.
4What is the requirement for an Extended Diversion Time Operation (EDTO / ETOPS) approval under PNG CAR Part 121 for twin-engine large aeroplanes?
A.No twin-engine aeroplane may operate over a route containing a point further than 60 minutes flying time at one-engine-inoperative cruise speed from an adequate aerodrome without specific CASA EDTO approval
B.Twin-engine aeroplanes can fly any ocean route without restrictions
C.EDTO rules apply only to quad-engine aircraft
D.EDTO approvals are issued by airport security
Explanation: Under CAR Part 121 Subpart G (EDTO), twin-engine aeroplanes operated beyond 60 minutes single-engine flight time from an adequate diversion airport require CASA EDTO approval, engine reliability validation, and specialized systems.
5Under PNG CAR Part 121.215, what is the net takeoff flight path gradient requirement following failure of the critical engine for a 2-engine large turbine aeroplane?
A.A positive net gradient (minimum 1.6% or published SID gradient) clearing all obstacles by at least 35 feet vertically
B.Zero climb gradient is acceptable
C.Level flight at 10 feet above the runway
D.Climb gradient of 10% regardless of weight
Explanation: Under CAR Part 121 performance rules, a 2-engine large transport aeroplane must demonstrate a positive net takeoff flight path (typically 1.6% net gradient for 2-engine) clearing obstacles by at least 35 ft vertically with one engine inoperative.
6Under PNG CAR Part 121, what is the dispatch landing distance calculation factor for a turbojet aeroplane on a DRY destination runway?
A.The aeroplane landing distance from 50 ft must not exceed 60% of the effective landing length available (LDA)

D.No calculation factor is required for dry runways
Explanation: Under CAR Part 121.223, a turbojet aeroplane must be dispatched at a weight allowing a full stop landing from 50 ft above the threshold within 60% of the landing distance available (LDA) at the destination aerodrome.
7What additional landing distance margin is required under PNG CAR Part 121 when dispatching a turbojet aeroplane to a WET destination runway?
A.At least 15% additional landing distance beyond the dry runway requirement (115% of dry requirement)
B.50% reduction in landing distance
C.No additional margin if thrust reversers are fitted
D.Double the runway length
Explanation: Under CAR Part 121.225, when a runway is forecast to be wet at ETA, the landing distance available must be at least 115% of the dry landing distance requirement (unless a shorter distance is demonstrated on wet surfaces in the Flight Manual).
8What is the role of an Airborne Collision Avoidance System (ACAS II / TCAS II) under PNG CAR Part 121?
A.Mandatory for all turbine aeroplanes over 5,700 kg MCTOW or authorized for more than 19 passenger seats, providing Resolution Advisories (RAs) to prevent mid-air collisions
B.Optional equipment for day VFR
C.Used only to detect terrain hazards
D.Used to control landing gear extension
Explanation: Under CAR Part 121.533, large turbine transport aeroplanes must be equipped with ACAS II (TCAS II) version 7.1 providing vertical Resolution Advisories (RAs) to avoid traffic collisions.
9When an ACAS II Resolution Advisory (RA) conflicts with an Air Traffic Control instruction, what action MUST the flight crew take under CAR Part 91 / Part 121?
A.Follow the ACAS II RA immediately and inform ATC as soon as possible
B.Ignore the ACAS II RA and obey the ATC instruction
C.Ask passengers which instruction to follow
D.Disconnect autopilot and descend to sea level
Explanation: In accordance with ICAO and PNG CAR Part 91/121 rules, when a pilot receives an ACAS II Resolution Advisory (RA), they MUST respond immediately by following the RA trajectory, even if it conflicts with an ATC instruction, and notify ATC promptly.
10Under PNG CAR Part 121, what is the maximum recording duration required for Cockpit Voice Recorders (CVR) on newly certificated large transport aeroplanes?
A.30 minutes
B.2 hours (or 25 hours under modern standard upgrades)
C.10 hours
D.50 hours
Explanation: Under CAR Part 121.527 / ICAO Annex 6 standards, Cockpit Voice Recorders (CVRs) must retain at least the last 2 hours of cockpit audio (with recent standards moving to 25 hours for new airframe types).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the pass mark for the PNG CASA ATPL Air Law exam?

PNG Civil Aviation Rule 61.17(b) requires an applicant for a written examination under Part 61 to gain at least 75% of the total examination marks.

Can a foreign ATPL holder skip the PNG air law exam?

No. AC61-7 states that a current ATPL issued by a foreign contracting State will normally be accepted for flight time experience and for all written examination passes except air law, provided the applicant meets the stated command experience. CASA PNG's ATPL(A) checklist asks for the PNG ATPL Air Law examination pass result.

How long is an ATPL written examination credit valid?

CAR 61.17(d)(2) makes the airline transport pilot licence written examination credit valid for 10 years, with a separate limit applying to the air law pass. Check the current text of CAR 61.17 before relying on an older credit.

Are these practice questions the real exam?

No. This is a free English-language multiple-choice study adaptation written against the official CASA PNG syllabus and rule text. It is not an official CASA PNG or Aspeq paper and does not reproduce the real exam's format. Verify every rule reference against the current CAR Parts 121 and 125, which are amended frequently.
