About the New York CDL HazMat Exam
The New York CDL Hazardous Materials Endorsement Test is the written knowledge exam for drivers who need an H endorsement, or an X endorsement when combined with tank vehicle authority, to transport hazardous materials or hazardous waste in amounts requiring placards. New York DMV requires H/X applicants to be age 21 or older, certify only to Non-Excepted Interstate or Non-Excepted Intrastate driving, pass the HazMat written test, submit HAZ-44 with proof of legal status, and complete fingerprint-based background checks. First-time H endorsement applicants must complete FMCSA Entry-Level Driver Training before the HazMat Knowledge Test. The operational test content comes from the New York CDL Manual Section 9, CDL-11 Hazardous Materials Manual, and federal hazardous materials rules for shipping papers, emergency response information, placards, package markings and labels, hazard classes, segregation, loading and unloading, routing, parking, and security awareness.
