1Which classical management thinker set out 14 general principles of management, including unity of command and division of work?
A.Frederick Winslow Taylor
B.Henri Fayol
C.Max Weber
D.Elton Mayo
Explanation: Henri Fayol's administrative management theory listed 14 principles of management (division of work, authority, discipline, unity of command, unity of direction and others) and described the manager's job as planning, organizing, commanding, coordinating and controlling.
2What is the main difference between delegation of authority and decentralization?
A.Delegation hands the subordinate full accountability for the result, while under decentralization accountability stays only with top management
B.Delegation is permanent once granted and cannot be withdrawn, while decentralization is a temporary arrangement used for particular projects
C.Delegation applies only to financial approval powers, while decentralization applies only to staffing and personnel decisions
D.Delegation is a manager passing specific authority to a subordinate; decentralization is an organization-wide policy of pushing decisions to lower levels
Explanation: Delegation is an individual act: a manager assigns a task and the authority needed for it to a subordinate. Decentralization is a deliberate, organization-wide policy of spreading decision-making authority to lower levels. Delegation is the process through which decentralization is achieved.
3In Maslow's hierarchy of needs, which level of need becomes the main motivator once safety and security needs are reasonably satisfied?
A.Esteem needs
B.Physiological needs
C.Social (belonging) needs
D.Self-actualization needs
Explanation: Maslow's order is physiological, safety, social (love and belonging), esteem and self-actualization. After safety needs are met, the need for acceptance, friendship and belonging becomes the next motivator.
4According to Herzberg, which job factor acts as a motivator (satisfier) rather than a hygiene factor?
A.Recognition for achievement and responsibility
B.Salary level and pay scale set by the bylaws
C.Physical working conditions in the office
D.Company policy and administration rules
Explanation: Herzberg found that achievement, recognition, the work itself, responsibility and growth create satisfaction and motivate. Pay, working conditions, supervision and company policy are hygiene factors: their absence causes dissatisfaction, but improving them does not by itself motivate.
5Which leadership style gives group members almost complete freedom to set their own goals and solve problems, with very little direction from the leader?
A.Autocratic leadership
B.Democratic (participative) leadership
C.Bureaucratic leadership
D.Laissez-faire (free-rein) leadership
Explanation: A laissez-faire or free-rein leader hands most decisions to the group and intervenes only when asked. It can work with highly skilled, self-motivated staff but often fails where direction is needed.
6What does 'span of control' refer to in organizing?
A.The number of hierarchical levels between the chief executive and front-line staff
B.The number of subordinates who report directly to one manager
C.The geographical area covered by a branch network
D.The maximum loan amount a branch manager may approve
Explanation: Span of control (span of management) is the number of subordinates a superior directly supervises. A narrow span produces a tall structure with many levels; a wide span produces a flatter structure.
7During a performance appraisal, a supervisor rates an assistant highly on every dimension mainly because the assistant is always punctual. Which rating error does this illustrate?
A.Central tendency error
B.Recency effect
C.Halo effect
D.Leniency error
Explanation: The halo effect occurs when one strong impression, here punctuality, colours the ratings on unrelated dimensions such as accuracy or customer service. Using defined criteria for each dimension and documented evidence helps reduce it.
8An accounts assistant in one department sends information directly to the chief of a different department, bypassing the normal chain of command. What type of communication flow is this?
A.Diagonal (crosswise) communication
B.Downward communication
C.Horizontal (lateral) communication
D.Upward communication
Explanation: Diagonal communication crosses both departmental boundaries and hierarchical levels. It speeds up coordination but should be used within agreed rules so that line managers are kept informed.
9What is the purpose of the darta (registration) and chalani (dispatch) registers kept in a Nepalese office?
A.To record customers' daily cash deposits and withdrawals at the counter
B.To track staff attendance, leave balances and overtime hours each month
C.To record incoming and outgoing official correspondence with reference numbers
D.To keep the stock of stationery and office equipment issued to sections
Explanation: The darta register records incoming letters and documents with a registration number and date, while the chalani register records outgoing correspondence with a dispatch number. Together they give the office an official trail for tracing correspondence.
10A provincial office arranges its files by province, district and municipality of the correspondent. Which filing classification is being used?
A.Chronological filing
B.Numerical filing
C.Alphabetical filing
D.Geographical filing
Explanation: Geographical filing groups records by location, which suits organizations whose work is organized by area, such as a network of branches or provincial offices.

1Use NRB's 2082/07/24 syllabus as your checklist; the Constitution section covers only Parts 1, 3 and 4 and the Schedules.
2Know the NRB Act sections on objectives (4), functions (5), Board (14), Governor's appointment (15) and tenure (18).
3Practise numerical questions in interest, profit and loss, standard deviation and price index without a calculator.
4Learn current NRB monetary and regulatory tools (CRR, SLR, interest rate corridor, loan classification) from NRB's own publications.
5Prepare for the PSC pre-qualification exam separately, since passing it is a condition for applying.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does NRB still hold its own MCQ pre-test for Assistants?

No. Under the syllabus approved on 2082/07/24, applicants must already hold the Public Service Commission's unified pre-qualification certificate for Level 4 non-technical posts of corporate bodies. That PSC exam has 50 MCQs worth 2 marks each, lasts 45 minutes and deducts 20% for each wrong answer; the certificate is valid for one year.

What is the format of the NRB Assistant written exam?

There are two subjective papers of 100 marks each, lasting 2 hours 30 minutes, with a pass mark of 40. Paper I covers banking, accounting, mathematics and IT; Paper II covers economics, management, and the Constitution and banking laws. A 30-mark oral interview follows.

Who can apply and what does it cost?

NRB's 2082 notice required certificate level or 10+2, the PSC pre-qualification certificate, Nepali citizenship and age 18 to 35 (40 for women). The fee was NPR 800 for one group plus NPR 300 for each additional inclusive group.

In what language is the exam held?

Question papers are set in both Nepali and English, and candidates may answer in Nepali, English or both. This bank uses English and is a study adaptation, not an official translation.

Is this bank a simulation of the NRB exam?

No. It is an independent multiple-choice study resource by OpenExamPrep. The NRB written papers require short and long written answers, so also practise writing structured answers and calculations in full.
