1A 24 V ideal battery supplies two resistors in parallel, R1 = 12 Ω and R2 = 6 Ω. What total current does the battery deliver?
A.6 A
B.2 A
C.4 A
D.8 A
Explanation: Req = (12 × 6)/(12 + 6) = 4 Ω, so I = 24/4 = 6 A. As a check, the branch currents are 24/12 = 2 A and 24/6 = 4 A, which add to 6 A.
2A linear DC network has a Thevenin voltage of 50 V and a Thevenin resistance of 25 Ω. What load resistance receives maximum power?
A.12.5 Ω
B.50 Ω
C.100 Ω
D.25 Ω
Explanation: Maximum power is transferred when RL = Rth = 25 Ω. The load power is then Vth²/(4Rth) = 2500/100 = 25 W, and the transfer efficiency is only 50%.
3By Norton's theorem, an active linear two-terminal network can be replaced by which equivalent circuit?
A.A voltage source in series with an impedance
B.A current source in parallel with an impedance
C.A voltage source in parallel with an impedance
D.A current source in series with an impedance
Explanation: The Norton equivalent is an ideal current source IN, equal to the short-circuit current at the terminals, in parallel with the network's equivalent impedance seen from the terminals.
4A series RLC circuit has R = 10 Ω, L = 100 mH and C = 10 μF. What is its resonant angular frequency ω0?
A.100 rad/s
B.159 rad/s
C.1,000 rad/s
D.10,000 rad/s
Explanation: ω0 = 1/√(LC). LC = 0.1 × 10⁻⁵ = 10⁻⁶ s², so ω0 = 1/10⁻³ = 1,000 rad/s, which is about 159 Hz.
5A balanced star-connected load takes 10 A from a 400 V (line-to-line) supply at 0.8 power factor lagging. What is the total active power?
A.1,848 W
B.3,200 W
C.9,600 W
D.About 5,543 W
Explanation: P = √3 × VL × IL × cos φ = 1.732 × 400 × 10 × 0.8 ≈ 5,543 W. Equivalently, each phase has 230.9 V × 10 A × 0.8 ≈ 1,848 W, and three phases give about 5,543 W.
6What is the power factor of a series RLC circuit at resonance?
A.1.0 (unity)
B.0 lagging
C.0 leading
D.0.707 lagging
Explanation: At resonance XL = XC, so the net reactance is zero and Z = R. Voltage and current are in phase, giving unity power factor.
7A magnetic circuit has a mean length of 0.5 m, a cross-section of 0.002 m² and a relative permeability of 1,000 (μ0 = 4π × 10⁻⁷ H/m). What is its reluctance?
A.3.98 × 10⁵ AT/Wb
B.1.99 × 10⁵ AT/Wb
C.7.96 × 10⁵ AT/Wb
D.1.59 × 10⁶ AT/Wb
Explanation: S = l/(μ0 μr A) = 0.5/(4π × 10⁻⁷ × 1000 × 0.002) = 0.5/(2.513 × 10⁻⁶) ≈ 1.99 × 10⁵ AT/Wb.
8In the two-wattmeter method on a balanced three-phase load, both wattmeters read the same positive value. What is the load power factor?
A.0.5 lagging
B.0.866 lagging
C.1.0 (unity)
D.0
Explanation: tan φ = √3 (W1 − W2)/(W1 + W2). With W1 = W2, tan φ = 0, so φ = 0° and the power factor is unity.
9To which of the following can the superposition theorem NOT be applied directly?
A.A linear circuit with two independent DC voltage sources
B.A linear AC network with one voltage source and one current source
C.A linear resistive network that also contains dependent sources
D.The total power dissipated in a resistor fed by two sources
Explanation: Superposition applies to responses that are linear in the sources, such as voltages and currents. Power varies with the square of current (I²R), so the power from each source cannot simply be added. The currents must be superposed first and the power then calculated.
10What is the form factor of a pure sinusoidal wave?
A.1.11
B.1.00
C.1.414
D.1.57
Explanation: Form factor = RMS value / average value over a half-cycle = (Vm/√2)/(2Vm/π) = π/(2√2) ≈ 1.11.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the format and passing score of the NEC Electrical Engineering exam?

Under NEC's 2082 marking scheme, the paper has 100 multiple-choice questions worth 1 mark each (full marks 100), takes 2 hours and needs 50% to pass. It replaced the earlier mix of 60 one-mark and 20 two-mark questions. The official marking scheme does not mention negative marking.

How are questions distributed across the AElE syllabus?

The AElE syllabus has 10 chapters, each with 6 sub-chapters. NEC sets 10 questions from each chapter, including at least one from every sub-chapter, so each chapter carries 10% of the marks.

What are the exam and registration fees?

The exam fee is NPR 2,500, paid with the online application at register.nec.gov.np. Applications in the late window, up to seven days after the deadline, cost double. After passing, the NEC Regulations set a registration fee of NPR 5,000 for entry in the register as a general registered engineer.

Who is eligible to take the NEC AElE exam?

Applicants need a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an institution recognized by the Nepal Engineering Council. Related programmes such as electrical and electronics engineering have their own registration syllabus, so check the syllabus for your degree on nec.gov.np.

How often is the NEC registration exam held?

The NEC Act requires the Council to hold the registration exam at least twice a year, and NEC publishes an annual exam calendar. The 14th exam was held in Asoj 2083 (October 2026) at centres in Lalitpur (IOE Pulchowk) and Pokhara.

In which language is the exam conducted?

The official AElE syllabus and NEC's model questions are in English, and this practice bank is also in English.

Is this practice bank official?

No. These are independent practice questions by OpenExamPrep for studying the AElE syllabus topics. They are not NEC questions, and NEC's notices on nec.gov.np remain the authority on exam dates, fees and rules.
