The GMDSS General Operator Certificate (GOC) is the highest radio operator qualification for seafarers under SOLAS Chapter IV and STCW Code Section A-IV/2. Issued by NIMASA in Nigeria, the GOC permits the holder to operate GMDSS radio equipment on all sea areas (A1, A2, A3, A4) aboard any vessel globally.
Assessment
The NIMASA GMDSS GOC examination consists of a 60-question written multiple-choice test (120 minutes) assessing theoretical knowledge of GMDSS equipment, radiocommunication regulations, and emergency procedures, followed by a practical assessment on live/simulated radio console equipment (VHF/MF/HF DSC, Inmarsat-C, NAVTEX, EPIRB, SART).
