NECO SSCE English Language is the compulsory English exam in Nigeria's Senior School Certificate Examination, set by the National Examinations Council for SS3 and private GCE candidates. It is paper-based across Paper II (Essay, Comprehension and Summary, 1 hour 45 minutes), Paper III (Objective) and Paper IV (Test of Orals, 45 minutes). From the 2026 SSCE Internal exam the Objective paper was cut from 100 to 80 multiple-choice questions and shortened to 50 minutes, with sections on antonyms (10), synonyms (10), idioms/phrasal verbs and foreign words (10), registers (10), grammatical structures (30) and cloze (10). About the NECO English Exam
The NECO SSCE English Language examination is the compulsory English assessment in Nigeria's Senior School Certificate Examination, conducted by the National Examinations Council for final-year senior secondary (SS3) candidates and for private GCE candidates. It is a multi-paper, paper-based exam: Paper II is a written Essay, Comprehension and Summary paper; Paper III is an Objective (multiple-choice) paper; and Paper IV is a Test of Orals covering the theory of spoken English. From the 2026 SSCE Internal exam, NECO restructured the Objective paper, reducing it from 100 to 80 questions and shortening it to 50 minutes, with six sections: Antonyms (10), Synonyms (10), Idioms, Phrasal Verbs and Foreign Words (10), Appropriateness of Registers (10), Grammatical Structures (30) and Cloze Text (10). Grammatical Structures
The largest objective section with 30 questions. Practice covers tenses, subject-verb agreement and concord, parts of speech, prepositions, conjunctions, articles, question tags, reported speech, punctuation and standard sentence usage.
Synonyms and Antonyms
Two 10-question objective sections. Synonyms ask for the word nearest in meaning to an underlined word; Antonyms ask for the word most nearly opposite. Practice builds senior-secondary vocabulary and shades of meaning.
Idioms, Phrasal Verbs and Foreign Words
A 10-question section on the meaning of common English idioms and phrasal verbs and the sense of foreign expressions (Latin, French and others) used in formal English, such as bona fide, status quo and per capita.
Appropriateness of Registers
A 10-question section that matches specialist vocabulary to its field. Candidates identify the area of life (law, medicine, sport, commerce, music, religion, agriculture and so on) suggested by a group of words.
Cloze Text
A 10-question cloze passage with numbered gaps. Candidates choose the option that best fits each blank, testing vocabulary, collocation, cohesion and grammatical fit within continuous text.
Comprehension and Summary
Paper II reading skills: literal and inferential understanding of passages, meaning of words and phrases in context, identifying main ideas, and summarising specified points accurately in the candidate's own words.
Test of Orals (Spoken English)
Paper IV theory of spoken English: vowel and consonant sounds, words with the same vowel or consonant sound, rhyme, word stress, sentence (emphatic) stress and intonation patterns.
