NECO English Study Tips from Top Performers

Learn the 2026 objective layout by section so you can pace yourself: with 80 questions in 50 minutes you have under 40 seconds per question, so answer the easy lexis items quickly and bank time for grammar.
Build vocabulary in synonym and antonym pairs, and always read the underlined word in its sentence first, because NECO often tests the meaning that fits the context rather than the most common meaning.
Memorise the common register word-groups (law, medicine, sport, commerce, music, agriculture, religion) so you can name the field quickly from a cluster of specialist terms.
Keep a short list of frequently tested idioms, phrasal verbs and foreign expressions such as bona fide, status quo, vice versa and per capita, and revise their exact meanings.
For grammatical structures, drill concord, tenses, question tags, prepositions and reported speech, which together make up most of the 30-question grammar section.
For the Test of Orals, learn the sound classifications and stress rules rather than guessing, and practise spotting words that share the same vowel or consonant sound.
