About the NECO BECE Exam
The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is the national end-of-Junior-Secondary examination in Nigeria, taken by JSS3 students in the ninth and final year of Basic Education. NECO administers a BECE diet (commonly called Junior WAEC alongside the state and NBAIS variants), assessing the 9-Year Basic Education Curriculum across core subjects including English Studies, Mathematics, Basic Science and Technology, and National Values Education (which incorporates Social Studies, Civic Education and Security Education). Most subjects combine an objective (multiple-choice) paper with an essay or theory paper, and some include practical or drawing components. Results are reported as grades from A (Distinction) to F (Fail); a Pass in English Studies and Mathematics is required to earn the certificate and progress to Senior Secondary School.
Assessment
Each core subject is examined with an objective (multiple-choice) paper plus, for many subjects, an essay/theory paper; Mathematics has objective papers and a separate theory paper, while English Studies pairs objective items with an essay paper. Objective items use options A to E.
Time Limit
Times vary by subject paper; for example each Mathematics objective paper is about 1 hour 20 minutes with a 40-minute essay paper. The complete BECE timetable spans several examination days, with the 2026 NECO BECE scheduled for late April 2026.
Passing Score
Results are graded A (Distinction), B (Upper Credit), C (Lower Credit), P (Pass) and F (Fail). A candidate must achieve at least a Pass in both English Studies and Mathematics to be awarded the Basic Education Certificate and proceed to SSS1.
