1An aircraft cruises at a groundspeed of 420 knots. What distance in nautical miles does it cover in 15 minutes?
A.105 NM
B.95 NM
C.115 NM
D.140 NM
Explanation: Distance equals speed multiplied by time. Fifteen minutes is 0.25 hour, so an aircraft flying at 420 knots travels 420 × 0.25 = 105 nautical miles. A quick mental check: 420 knots is 7 NM per minute, and 7 × 15 = 105.
2An aircraft is 180 NM from a navigational waypoint. Flying at a constant groundspeed of 360 knots, how many minutes will it take to reach the waypoint?
A.25 minutes
B.35 minutes
C.40 minutes
D.30 minutes
Explanation: Time equals distance divided by speed: 180 NM ÷ 360 knots = 0.5 hour, which is 30 minutes. Equivalently, 360 knots is 6 NM per minute, and 180 ÷ 6 = 30.
3Aircraft A flies at a groundspeed of 480 knots. Aircraft B follows on the same track at a groundspeed of 420 knots. If Aircraft A is currently 40 NM ahead of Aircraft B, what will the longitudinal distance between them be after 30 minutes?
A.50 NM
B.60 NM
C.70 NM
D.80 NM
Explanation: The leading aircraft is faster, so the gap opens at 480 − 420 = 60 knots. In 30 minutes (0.5 hour) the gap grows by 60 × 0.5 = 30 NM, so the spacing becomes 40 + 30 = 70 NM.
4An aircraft has a true airspeed of 240 knots and a headwind component of 40 knots along its route. How many minutes will it take to fly the remaining 300 NM to its destination?
A.75 minutes
B.90 minutes
C.100 minutes
D.64 minutes
Explanation: A headwind reduces groundspeed: 240 − 40 = 200 knots. The time required is 300 NM ÷ 200 knots = 1.5 hours, which is 90 minutes.
5If an aircraft maintains a constant groundspeed of 180 knots, how many nautical miles does it travel each minute?
A.2.0 NM
B.2.5 NM
C.3.5 NM
D.3.0 NM
Explanation: A knot is one nautical mile per hour. Dividing 180 knots by 60 minutes gives 3.0 nautical miles per minute. Converting knots to NM per minute is a core shortcut for quick traffic estimates.
6Two aircraft are flying directly towards each other at the same flight level on the same airway. Aircraft 1 has a groundspeed of 450 knots and Aircraft 2 has a groundspeed of 390 knots. If they are currently 140 NM apart, how many minutes will elapse before they reach the same point if neither changes level or heading?
A.10 minutes
B.8 minutes
C.12 minutes
D.140 minutes
Explanation: For opposite-direction traffic, the closure rate is the sum of the groundspeeds: 450 + 390 = 840 knots, or 14 NM per minute. The time to meet is 140 NM ÷ 14 NM per minute = 10 minutes.
7Aircraft A (trailing) flies at 460 knots groundspeed behind Aircraft B (leading), which flies at 400 knots groundspeed on the same track and flight level. Aircraft A is currently 35 NM behind Aircraft B. In how many minutes will the spacing fall to a 5 NM minimum?
A.20 minutes
B.25 minutes
C.35 minutes
D.30 minutes
Explanation: The spacing that can be used up is 35 − 5 = 30 NM. The trailing aircraft gains 460 − 400 = 60 knots, which is 1 NM per minute, so the 5 NM minimum is reached after 30 ÷ 1 = 30 minutes.
8Apply this rule exactly as written: two aircraft are separated if they are at least 1,000 ft apart vertically OR at least 5 NM apart horizontally. Which pair is NOT separated?
A.FL340 and FL340, 7 NM apart
B.FL350 and FL350, 4 NM apart
C.FL350 and FL360, 2 NM apart
D.FL330 and FL350, 3 NM apart
Explanation: Check each pair against both conditions; meeting either one is enough. Two aircraft at FL350 have no vertical separation, and 4 NM is less than 5 NM, so neither condition is met. Rule-application items reward reading the 'OR' carefully instead of checking only one condition.
9Two aircraft are converging on a common VOR at an angle of 90 degrees. Aircraft X is 60 NM from the VOR at a groundspeed of 300 knots; Aircraft Y is 80 NM from the VOR at a groundspeed of 400 knots. Which statement correctly describes their arrival at the VOR?
A.Aircraft X arrives first because it is 20 NM closer to the VOR
B.Aircraft Y arrives first because it is 100 knots faster
C.Aircraft Y arrives 4 minutes before Aircraft X
D.Both aircraft reach the VOR at the same time, 12 minutes from now
Explanation: Aircraft X needs 60 ÷ 300 = 0.2 hour = 12 minutes; Aircraft Y needs 80 ÷ 400 = 0.2 hour = 12 minutes. They reach the VOR at the same moment, which is exactly the kind of conflict a controller must detect early and resolve.
10A rule card states: up to and including FL410, aircraft are vertically separated if they are at least 1,000 ft apart; if either aircraft is above FL410, they need at least 2,000 ft. Using only this rule, which pair of levels is NOT vertically separated?
A.FL290 and FL300
B.FL400 and FL410
C.FL430 and FL440
D.FL410 and FL430
Explanation: FL430 and FL440 are both above FL410, so they need 2,000 ft, but they are only 1,000 ft apart. The rule mirrors ICAO Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum (RVSM) practice: 1,000 ft between RVSM-approved aircraft from FL290 to FL410 inclusive, and 2,000 ft above FL410.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the EAMAC CCA selection?

The Sélection CCA is EAMAC's competitive selection for its air traffic controller cycle (Contrôleur de la Circulation Aérienne). Candidates are selected through test centres in ASECNA's 18 African member states (ASECNA also counts France as a member). Training at EAMAC in Niamey, Niger, lasts 14 months for CCA-P (aerodrome and approach control) or 24 months for CCA (aerodrome, approach and area control).

Was a CCA selection session held in 2026?

No. EAMAC's official 'Tableau des cycles ouverts' for the 2026 session marked the Contrôleur cycle as 'NON OUVERT' in every member state. EAMAC opens the CCA cycle only when member states express operational controller recruitment needs. The most recent selection session was held from 30 May to 3 June 2025.

How does the CCA selection format differ from the EAC and Ingénieur cycles?

The Ingénieur and EAC cycles use written papers (in 2026: 4-hour French, mathematics and physics papers plus a 2-hour English paper). The CCA selection instead uses online psychotechnical and general knowledge tests (2–3 hours, several hundred questions) covering controller aptitudes plus mathematics, physics, English and French, followed by a 20-minute individual English interview.

What English proficiency level is required for the CCA interview?

The interview evaluates candidates against the ICAO Language Proficiency Rating Scale (Annex 1). A performance below ICAO Level 3 (Pre-operational) is eliminatory. Controllers must ultimately attain ICAO Level 4 (Operational) for operational air traffic control licensing.

Who is eligible to apply for the CCA selection?

Student applicants must have validated at least two years of higher scientific or technical education (DEUG, DUES, L2, CPGE, BTS, DUT, DTS) with strong mathematics and physics, and be aged between 21 and 29 on 1 January of the session year. ASECNA agents and civil aviation or meteorology professionals may apply up to age 45 if they are operational in an ASECNA technical service (NA, IRE or MTO) and hold a scientific or technical Bac+2 diploma or the EAMAC Technicien Supérieur diploma.
