1Under Mozambican civil aviation regulations (MOZ-CAR Part 61), which of the following describes the operating privileges of a Private Pilot Licence - Aeroplane (PPL-A) holder?
A.Acting as Pilot in Command (PIC) or co-pilot of an aeroplane engaged in non-commercial flights without receiving financial compensation or remuneration.
B.Acting as Pilot in Command of an aircraft carrying revenue-paying passengers on scheduled regional air transport flights.
C.Providing commercial ab-initio flight training to student pilots for direct financial remuneration without an instructor rating.
D.Operating chartered cargo flights for compensation under commercial air transport certificate rules.
Explanation: MOZ-CAR Part 61 establishes that a private pilot licence entitles the holder to act as pilot in command or co-pilot of an aircraft of the certified category and class in non-revenue, non-commercial operations. Receiving remuneration or operating commercial flights requires at least a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL).
2What is the minimum age required by the Instituto de Aviação Civil de Moçambique (IACM) under MOZ-CAR Part 61 for the issuance of a Private Pilot Licence (PPL)?
A.16 years of age
B.17 years of age
C.18 years of age
D.21 years of age
Explanation: MOZ-CAR 61.03.1 requires an applicant for a Private Pilot Licence (Aeroplane) to be at least 17 years old. The earlier student pilot licence (licença de aluno piloto) under MOZ-CAR 61.02.1 may be issued from age 16 for aeroplanes.
3Under MOZ-CAR Parts 61 and 67, which class of medical certificate (atestado médico) must an applicant for a Private Pilot Licence (Aeroplane) hold at minimum?
A.Class 1 medical certificate
B.Class 2 medical certificate
C.Class 3 medical certificate
D.A general practitioner's fitness letter with no aviation medical class
Explanation: MOZ-CAR 61.03.1 requires a PPL(A) applicant to hold at least a valid Class 2 medical certificate issued under Part 67, and MOZ-CAR 67.00.2 lists private pilots under Class 2. A Class 2 certificate is valid for up to 60 months for holders under 60 years of age and 24 months for those over 60 (MOZ-CAR 67.00.5).
4What is the minimum total flight time required under MOZ-CAR Part 61 for an applicant completing standard non-integrated training for a Private Pilot Licence (Aeroplane)?
A.30 flight hours
B.40 flight hours
C.50 flight hours
D.65 flight hours
Explanation: MOZ-CAR 61.03.2 requires at least 40 hours of flight time as pilot of an aeroplane (35 hours after completing integrated training), including at least 25 hours of dual instruction and at least 10 hours of supervised solo flight. Of the solo time, 5 hours must be cross-country, including one 150 NM navigation flight with two full-stop landings at different aerodromes.
5Under the aeroplane fuel planning criteria in MOZ-CATS-OPS 91.07.12, how much final reserve fuel must be planned for an aeroplane with reciprocating (piston) engines?
A.Fuel to fly for 15 minutes
B.Fuel to fly for 30 minutes
C.Fuel to fly for 45 minutes
D.Fuel to fly for 60 minutes
Explanation: MOZ-CATS-OPS 91.07.12 lists final reserve fuel as fuel to fly for 45 minutes for aeroplanes with reciprocating engines. For turbine-powered aeroplanes it is 30 minutes at holding speed at 1,500 ft above aerodrome elevation. The Mozambican standard does not split the piston reserve into separate day and night VFR figures.
6In flight, a pilot of an aeroplane calculates that the usable fuel remaining on landing will be less than the planned final reserve fuel. What does MOZ-CAR 91.07.12 require the pilot-in-command to do?
A.Continue to the planned destination and record the shortfall in the flight folio after landing
B.Declare an emergency
C.Climb to a higher level to reduce fuel flow, with no further action required
D.Request a routine priority landing without declaring an emergency
Explanation: MOZ-CAR 91.07.12(3) states that if the usable fuel on board an aeroplane is less than the final reserve fuel, the pilot-in-command must declare an emergency (a helicopter must land as soon as possible). The same regulation requires the PIC to ensure the fuel remaining is never less than that needed to reach an aerodrome where a safe landing can be made.
7Under MOZ-CAR 91.06.9, what is the maximum indicated airspeed for an aircraft operating outside controlled airspace below flight level 100?
A.160 knots IAS
B.250 knots IAS
C.280 knots IAS
D.300 knots IAS
Explanation: MOZ-CAR 91.06.9(1) prohibits flying an aircraft outside controlled airspace below flight level 100 at an indicated airspeed of more than 250 knots. Separate limits apply inside a control zone or aerodrome traffic zone unless ATS authorises otherwise: 160 knots for piston-engine aircraft and 200 knots for turbine aircraft.
8A VFR flight in Mozambique will cruise more than 1,500 ft above the surface on a magnetic track of 265°. Using the semi-circular rule table in MOZ-CATS-OPS 91.06.33, which flight level is appropriate?
A.FL55
B.FL60
C.FL65
D.FL70
Explanation: For magnetic tracks from 180° to 359°, the MOZ-CATS-OPS 91.06.33 table lists IFR levels at even thousands (FL60, FL80, FL100) and VFR levels at even thousands plus 500 ft (FL45, FL65, FL85). FL65 is therefore correct. MOZ-CAR 91.06.33(2) exempts VFR flights below 1,500 ft above the surface unless ATS instructs otherwise.
9Under MOZ-CAR Part 91, when two aeroplanes are approaching head-on or approximately so, and there is danger of collision, what action must each pilot take?
A.Each aeroplane must alter its heading to the left.
B.Each aeroplane must alter its heading to the right.
C.The larger or faster aeroplane must maintain course while the lighter aircraft climbs.
D.The aeroplane flying at the higher altitude must climb while the lower aircraft descends.
Explanation: ICAO Annex 2 and MOZ-CAR Part 91 right-of-way rules state that when two aircraft are approaching head-on or approximately so, each pilot must alter heading to the right.
10When two power-driven aeroplanes of the same category are converging at approximately the same altitude, which aircraft has the right-of-way?
A.The aircraft that is flying at a higher airspeed.
B.The aircraft that has the other on its right side.
C.The aircraft that has the other on its left side.
D.The aircraft that made initial radio contact with air traffic control.
Explanation: Under standard right-of-way regulations, when two aircraft of the same category are converging at approximately the same level, the aircraft that has the other on its right must give way. Therefore, the aircraft on the right (which sees the other on its left) has the right-of-way.

Mozambique IACM Private Pilot (PPL-A): Suggested Study Strategy

1Learn the Mozambique-specific rules that differ from FAA or EASA habits: a 45-minute final reserve for piston aeroplanes, no alcohol within 12 hours of duty, overflight of aerodromes at not less than 2,000 ft, and VFR by day only.
2Memorise the MOZ-CAR 91.06.21 VMC table: 1,500 m horizontal and 1,000 ft vertical from cloud, with 5 km visibility below 10,000 ft AMSL and 8 km at or above it.
3Practise mass-and-balance, ISA deviation, pressure altitude and fuel-endurance calculations until you can do them quickly with a flight computer.
4Remember that compass turning and acceleration errors reverse in the Southern Hemisphere: turning from South the compass lags, and accelerating on East or West shows a false turn toward South.
