1Read the excerpt: 'A educação primária em Moçambique tem como finalidade proporcionar uma formação básica integral, desenvolvendo capacidades de comunicação, raciocínio lógico e socialização cívica.' Which text type (tipologia textual) does this excerpt belong to?
A.Texto narrativo
B.Texto dramático
C.Texto expositivo-explicativo
D.Texto argumentativo
Explanation: The excerpt presents and explains the aims of primary education in neutral, informative language. It does not tell a story, stage a dialogue or defend a thesis against other views, so it is an expository-explanatory text. INECE papers regularly open with this kind of 'Classifica o texto quanto à tipologia' question.
2Read the sentence: 'É urgente que as comunidades escolares participem activamente na gestão dos recursos educativos para garantir a permanência dos alunos.' What is the author's main communicative purpose?
A.To report statistics on how many pupils leave school
B.To explain how school resources are currently managed
C.To narrate an episode from the author's own school days
D.To urge school communities to take part in managing resources
Explanation: The evaluative expression 'É urgente que...' followed by the present subjunctive (conjuntivo) 'participem' is an appeal for action. The author is trying to persuade school communities to get involved so that pupils stay in school.
3In the sentence 'O professor planificou detalhadamente a aula experimental; contudo, a falta de reagentes inviabilizou a demonstração prática.', what relationship does the connector 'contudo' establish?
A.Conclusão
B.Adição
C.Explicação
D.Oposição (adversativa)
Explanation: 'Contudo' is an adversative connector, like 'mas', 'porém' and 'todavia'. It introduces a fact (the missing reagents) that goes against what the first clause leads us to expect (a well-planned demonstration).
4Read the sentence: 'A direcção distrital voltou a inspeccionar os centros pedagógicos após as cheias.' What does the expression 'voltou a inspeccionar' allow the reader to infer?
A.The centres had already been inspected at least once before
B.This was the first inspection the centres had ever received
C.The inspection was cancelled because of the floods
D.The floods happened after the inspection
Explanation: 'Voltar a + infinitivo' expresses repetition of an action. Saying the district office 'voltou a inspeccionar' presupposes an earlier inspection. The phrase 'após as cheias' places this new inspection after the floods.
5Read the excerpt: 'Embora o número de matrículas na 1.ª classe tenha crescido expressivamente no país, o maior desafio continua a ser a aquisição sólida das competências de leitura e cálculo nos primeiros ciclos.' What is the central idea of the excerpt?
A.Enrolment in Grade 1 has fallen across the country
B.Rising enrolment has already solved the problem of early-grade learning
C.Access has grown, but solid reading and numeracy skills remain the main challenge
D.Numeracy matters more than reading in the first cycles
Explanation: The concessive clause 'Embora... tenha crescido' admits that enrolment has grown. The main clause then states that the biggest challenge is still solid reading and numeracy. The author contrasts quantity (access) with quality (learning).
6Consider four statements: (1) 'A prova de Matemática começou às 8 horas.' (2) 'Os candidatos realizaram a prova em duas salas.' (3) 'O exame continha quarenta perguntas.' (4) 'Esta metodologia de ensino é a mais brilhante do mundo.' Which statement expresses an opinion (juízo de valor) rather than a fact?
A.Statement (1)
B.Statement (2)
C.Statement (3)
D.Statement (4)
Explanation: Statement (4) uses the evaluative superlative 'a mais brilhante do mundo', which reflects the speaker's personal judgement and cannot be checked objectively. The other three statements give a time, a number of rooms and a number of questions, all of which can be verified.
7In the sentence 'A escola recebeu novos manuais de didáctica, os quais enriquecerão a biblioteca pedagógica.', what does the relative pronoun 'os quais' refer to?
A.A escola
B.Novos manuais de didáctica
C.A biblioteca pedagógica
D.A didáctica
Explanation: 'Os quais' is masculine plural, so its antecedent must also be masculine plural. The only such noun phrase is 'novos manuais de didáctica', and it is the textbooks that will enrich the library.
8Read the excerpt: 'Seria ingénuo supor que a simples entrega de manuais, sem formação contínua para os professores, resolverá por encanto os problemas de aprendizagem.' How is the author's stance best described?
A.Enthusiastic: it praises textbook delivery as a complete solution
B.Neutral: it only reports how many textbooks were delivered
C.Critical and cautionary: it warns against a solution that ignores teacher training
D.Hostile to teachers: it blames them for poor learning results
Explanation: The words 'ingénuo' (naive) and 'por encanto' (as if by magic) show that the author rejects the idea that textbooks alone will solve learning problems. The phrase 'sem formação contínua para os professores' identifies what is missing: ongoing teacher training.
9In the text 'O Instituto de Formação de Professores do distrito celebrou o seu vigésimo aniversário. O estabelecimento de ensino formou centenas de educadores.', how is cohesion achieved between the two sentences?
A.Elipse do sujeito na segunda frase
B.Repetição do mesmo nome próprio
C.Uso de uma conjunção subordinativa temporal
D.Substituição lexical por um hiperónimo
Explanation: The second sentence refers back to the institute with 'o estabelecimento de ensino', a more general term (hiperónimo) for any school or institute. This lexical substitution links the sentences without repeating the full name.
10Read the passage: 'Alguns comentadores afirmam que o insucesso escolar resulta exclusivamente da indisciplina dos alunos. Todavia, estudos recentes mostram que factores como a desnutrição, a distância até à escola e a falta de material pesam muito.' Which argumentative strategy does the writer use?
A.Refuting a single-cause claim with evidence of several factors
B.Arguing from personal childhood memories
C.Repeating the opening claim to reinforce it
D.Relying only on the authority of one named expert
Explanation: The writer first presents an opposing view ('exclusivamente da indisciplina'), then rejects it with 'Todavia' and research evidence pointing to several causes. Presenting a claim and then refuting it with evidence is a classic counter-argument strategy.

IFP Admissão: Suggested Study Strategy

1Work through past INECE IFP/EPF papers in Portuguese: both papers follow the same pattern of 40 four-option questions in 120 minutes, about 3 minutes per question.
2In Língua Portuguesa, expect a long passage with around 15 comprehension questions, then grammar, syntax, vocabulary, text types and a few literature questions.
3Learn the Portuguese grammar terms used on the papers, such as complemento directo, predicativo do sujeito, sujeito subentendido, oração subordinada integrante and presente do conjuntivo.
4Write in the spelling used on INECE papers (for example 'lectivo', 'direcção', 'objectivo'); Mozambique has not ratified the 1990 Orthographic Agreement.
5Revise Mozambican literature: authors such as José Craveirinha, Noémia de Sousa, Mia Couto, Paulina Chiziane and Ungulani Ba Ka Khosa, and genres of oral literature.
6In Matemática, practise without a calculator and include 12ª classe topics: progressions, limits, continuity and derivatives appear alongside algebra and geometry.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the format of the IFP/EPF admission exam?

There are two written papers in Portuguese set by INECE: Língua Portuguesa and Matemática. Each paper has 40 questions with four alternatives, lasts 120 minutes (08:00–10:00) and is answered on a folha de respostas. Shortlisted candidates then have an interview at the institution where they sat the exams.

When are the exams for the 2027 intake?

According to the edital dated 18 September 2026, registration runs from 1 to 30 October 2026, with online pre-registration at ifp.inece.co.mz followed by validation at the institution. Língua Portuguesa is on 7 January 2027 and Matemática on 8 January 2027. Interviews run from 25 January to 2 February 2027.

Who can apply?

Applicants must have completed the 12ª Classe of the Sistema Nacional de Educação with a média global of at least 12 valores and be aged at least 17 and at most 27 by 31 December 2026 (for the 2027 intake). At registration they submit a passport photo, the registration form, a certified copy of their BI, passport, driving licence or voter card, and a certified copy of their 12ª classe certificate. A declaração de passagem is not accepted.

How much does it cost?

The edital sets a taxa de inscrição of 250 MT and a propina de exame of 400 MT, a total of 650 MT per candidate. Payment arrangements are made through the IFP or EPF where you register.

What score do I need?

There is no fixed pass mark. To reach the interview you need at least 12 valores in each paper and a place within the interview limit of vacancies plus 50% (ties at the cut-off are also admitted). Places are then awarded by the unrounded average of the written exam and the interview, from the highest down, per institution and with gender equity; the interview mark must be at least 10.

Is this practice bank an official translation of the exam?

No. It is independent practice by OpenExamPrep: an English-language multiple-choice study adaptation. The official papers are in Portuguese, so Portuguese sentences, grammar terms and answer choices are kept wherever the Portuguese language itself is being tested. The bank does not simulate the interview.
