1What is the determinant of the 2x2 matrix A = [[3, 5], [2, 4]]?
A.2
B.7
C.22
D.-2
Explanation: The determinant of a 2x2 matrix [[a, b], [c, d]] is calculated as ad - bc. For matrix A, det(A) = (3)(4) - (5)(2) = 12 - 10 = 2.
2What is the inverse of the matrix C = [[1, 2], [3, 4]]?
A.[[-4, 2], [3, -1]]
B.[[-2, -1], [-1.5, 0.5]]
C.[[-2, 1], [1.5, -0.5]]
D.[[-0.5, 1], [1.5, -2]]
Explanation: The determinant of C is (1)(4) - (2)(3) = 4 - 6 = -2. The inverse is (1/det) * [[d, -b], [-c, a]] = (-1/2) * [[4, -2], [-3, 1]] = [[-2, 1], [1.5, -0.5]].
3Which ordered pair (x, y) solves the system of linear equations: 2x - y = 5 3x + 2y = 11?
A.x = 2 and y = -1
B.x = 4 and y = 3
C.x = 1 and y = -3
D.x = 3 and y = 1
Explanation: Multiplying the first equation by 2 gives 4x - 2y = 10. Adding this to the second equation (3x + 2y = 11) eliminates y: 7x = 21, so x = 3. Substituting x = 3 into the first equation gives 2(3) - y = 5, which solves to y = 1.
4What is the dot product of vectors u = [3, -2, 4] and v = [2, 5, -1]?
A.-8
B.0
C.12
D.20
Explanation: The dot product is the sum of component products: u · v = (3)(2) + (-2)(5) + (4)(-1) = 6 - 10 - 4 = -8.
5What is the cross product of the unit basis vectors i = [1, 0, 0] and j = [0, 1, 0]?
A.[0, 0, 0]
B.[0, 0, 1]
C.[1, 1, 0]
D.[0, 0, -1]
Explanation: In a right-handed Cartesian coordinate system, the cross product of unit vectors i and j is i × j = k = [0, 0, 1].
6Evaluate the limit: lim (x -> 0) [sin(5x) / (2x)].
A.0
B.1
C.5/2
D.undefined
Explanation: Using the standard trigonometric limit lim (u -> 0) [sin(u)/u] = 1, rewrite the expression as (5/2) * [sin(5x)/(5x)]. As x -> 0, this evaluates to (5/2)(1) = 5/2. Alternatively, L'Hôpital's rule yields lim [5 cos(5x) / 2] = 5/2.
7What is the limit at infinity: lim (x -> ∞) [(3x² - 5x + 2) / (7x² + 4)]?
A.0
B.∞
C.1
D.3/7
Explanation: Because both numerator and denominator are polynomials of the same degree (degree 2), the limit as x -> ∞ is given by the ratio of their leading coefficients: 3 / 7.
8What is the first derivative of f(x) = x³ e^(2x)?
A.x² e^(2x) (3 + 2x)
B.6x² e^(2x)
C.3x² e^(2x)
D.2x³ e^(2x)
Explanation: Apply the product rule: d/dx [u · v] = u'v + uv'. Here u = x³ (so u' = 3x²) and v = e^(2x) (so v' = 2e^(2x)). Thus f'(x) = 3x² e^(2x) + x³ (2e^(2x)) = x² e^(2x) (3 + 2x).
9What is the derivative of g(x) = ln(x² + 4)?
A.1 / (x² + 4)
B.2x / (x² + 4)
C.2 / (x² + 4)
D.x / (x² + 4)
Explanation: Using the chain rule for natural logarithms, d/dx [ln(u)] = u'/u. With u = x² + 4, u' = 2x, so g'(x) = 2x / (x² + 4).
10Find the critical points of the function f(x) = 2x³ - 9x² + 12x - 5.
A.x = -1 and x = -2
B.x = 0 and x = 3
C.x = 1 and x = 2
D.x = 1.5 only
Explanation: Critical points occur where f'(x) = 0. f'(x) = 6x² - 18x + 12 = 6(x² - 3x + 2) = 6(x - 1)(x - 2). Setting this to zero yields x = 1 and x = 2.

About the EXIL-CBI Exam

Independent EXIL-CBI practice by OpenExamPrep. The Examen Intermedio de Licenciatura en Ciencias Básicas de Ingenierías is Ceneval's diagnostic for engineering students midway through their degree. The 2026 version has 180 Spanish-language items with three answer options: 120 on mathematics, physics, and chemistry and 60 on Spanish reading comprehension and indirect writing. This bank is an English-language MCQ study adaptation, not an official translation or simulation: stems and explanations are in English with four options, and the language items keep their Spanish texts because Spanish is the skill tested.

Exam sponsor: Centro Nacional de Evaluación para la Educación Superior, A.C. (Ceneval). The requirements and fees below concern the certification or admission exam, separate from our free practice resources.

EXIL-CBI: Suggested Study Strategy

1Distribute study time according to the 2026 structure: the three sciences carry 40 items each, and Spanish reading and indirect writing together carry 60.
2In mathematics, practice limits, derivative rules, optimization, integration by parts, and second-order constant-coefficient differential equations until you can solve them without notes.
3In physics, include geometric optics (reflection, Snell's law, total internal reflection) alongside mechanics, electricity and magnetism, and thermodynamics.
4In chemistry, review redox reactions, standard reduction potentials, Gibbs energy, nomenclature, and percent-yield stoichiometry.
5For the language section, read academic reviews, research articles, short stories, essays, calls for participants, and news briefs in Spanish, and review agreement, connectors, and accentuation rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the EXIL-CBI?

The Examen Intermedio de Licenciatura en Ciencias Básicas de Ingenierías is a Ceneval diagnostic for engineering students who have finished the common foundational stage of their degree. It reports how well they master the basic sciences (mathematics, physics, and chemistry) and Spanish reading and writing skills, so students and institutions can identify strengths and areas for improvement.

How many questions does the EXIL-CBI have in 2026?

Ceneval's 2026 guide lists 180 items: 120 in the disciplinary section (40 mathematics, 40 physics, 40 chemistry) and 60 in the transversal language and communication section (30 reading comprehension, 30 indirect writing). About 20% are pilot items that do not count toward results. Each item has three answer options.

Is there a passing score?

No. The EXIL-CBI is diagnostic. Ceneval reports a level of Aún no satisfactorio, Satisfactorio, or Sobresaliente for each science and each language area; it does not issue a global or section result, and the exam cannot be used to accredit a degree or condition admission, retention, or graduation.

How do students register and how much does it cost?

Registration is organized by the contracting higher education institution, either on a date the institution sets or in one of Ceneval's national applications (for 2026, 29 May and 27 November). The 2026 prices are MXN 500 for the printed or on-site online exam and MXN 350 for Examen desde casa.

What materials are allowed?

The 2026 guide allows a non-programmable scientific calculator, which cannot be shared. Phones, tablets, smartwatches, and other recording or communication devices are prohibited.

Why is this practice bank in English with four options?

OpenExamPrep publishes one English-language practice bank per exam. This is an independent English-language MCQ study adaptation, not an official translation or a simulation of the Spanish exam. The official items have three options; ours use four. The language and communication questions keep their Spanish passages and answer choices because reading and writing in Spanish is the skill being tested.
