Sample EUC-NUTRI Practice Questions

Try these sample questions to review concepts for the EUC-NUTRI exam. Each question includes a detailed explanation. Start the interactive quiz above for the full 100+ question experience with AI tutoring.

1A 45-year-old man has a waist circumference of 98 cm and a height of 172 cm. What is his waist-to-height ratio, and what does it suggest?
A.0.47; no increase in cardiometabolic risk
B.0.57; increased cardiometabolic risk
C.1.75; normal fat distribution
D.0.57; underweight with low fat stores
Explanation: Waist-to-height ratio = 98 ÷ 172 ≈ 0.57. A ratio of 0.5 or more ('keep your waist to less than half your height') indicates central adiposity and increased cardiometabolic risk.
2A woman with obesity weighs 120 kg and her ideal body weight is estimated at 65 kg. Using the common adjustment 'ideal weight + 0.25 × (actual − ideal)', what adjusted body weight would be used to estimate her energy needs?
A.120 kg, her actual weight
B.65 kg, her ideal weight
C.92.5 kg, halfway between the two
D.About 79 kg
Explanation: Adjusted weight = 65 + 0.25 × (120 − 65) = 65 + 13.75 ≈ 79 kg. The adjustment accounts for the extra metabolically active tissue in obesity without using the full actual weight, which would overestimate needs.
3How can the height of a bedridden older adult who cannot stand be estimated for the nutrition assessment?
A.With knee-height prediction equations, such as Chumlea's
B.By using the height on an identity card issued years earlier
C.By multiplying the forearm length by four
D.By estimating it visually from the length of the bed
Explanation: Knee height, measured with the knee and ankle at 90°, changes little with age and is used in validated equations (for example Chumlea's, by sex and age) to estimate stature. Arm span or demi-span are alternatives.
4A pregnant woman with a normal pre-pregnancy BMI is at 24 weeks. According to the IOM (2009) guidelines, about how much weight should she gain per week during the second and third trimesters?
A.About 0.1 kg per week
B.About 1.0 kg per week
C.About 0.4 kg per week (0.35 to 0.50 kg)
D.No further gain should occur after week 20
Explanation: For women with a normal BMI, the IOM recommends a total gain of 11.5 to 16 kg, with about 0.42 kg per week (range 0.35 to 0.50) in the second and third trimesters.
5According to WHO, which hemoglobin concentration defines anemia in pregnancy?
A.Below 13.0 g/dL
B.Below 11.0 g/dL
C.Below 9.0 g/dL
D.Below 7.0 g/dL
Explanation: WHO defines anemia in pregnant women as hemoglobin below 11.0 g/dL (110 g/L). Values below 7.0 g/dL indicate severe anemia.
6A healthy term baby weighed 3.2 kg at birth. By about what age would the weight normally double, and about what weight is expected at 12 months?
A.Doubles at 12 months; about 6.4 kg at one year
B.Doubles at 2 months; about 12.8 kg by one year old
C.Doubles at 8 months; about 8 kg at one year
D.Doubles by 4–5 months; about 9.6 kg at one year
Explanation: Healthy term infants usually double their birth weight by about 4 to 5 months and triple it by about 12 months, so a 3.2-kg newborn would weigh about 9.6 kg at one year. Growth is tracked on the WHO standards.
7What is the recommended dietary allowance of calcium for adolescents aged 9 to 18 years?
A.1,300 mg per day
B.500 mg per day
C.800 mg per day
D.2,500 mg per day or more
Explanation: The Institute of Medicine recommends 1,300 mg of calcium per day for ages 9 to 18, the period of fastest bone mineral accrual. Dairy, calcium-set tofu, nixtamalized tortillas and fortified foods help meet it.
8An 80-year-old woman eats meat and dairy daily but has a low vitamin B12 level. What is the most likely explanation and appropriate advice?
A.Her B12 intake must be too low, so advise her to eat more red meat every day
B.B12 is not needed after age 65
C.Reduced absorption of food-bound B12; use fortified foods or supplements
D.Too much dairy blocks B12; stop dairy products
Explanation: Atrophic gastritis and reduced stomach acid in older adults impair the release of B12 from food proteins. Crystalline B12 in fortified foods or supplements does not need this step, so it is absorbed better.
9For most non-pregnant adults with diabetes, which HbA1c goal do current ADA Standards of Care recommend?
A.Below 5.0%
B.Below 7.0%
C.Below 9.0%
D.Below 10.0%
Explanation: The ADA recommends an HbA1c goal below 7% for many non-pregnant adults, individualized: stricter if it can be achieved safely, and less strict for people with frequent hypoglycemia, limited life expectancy or advanced complications.
10A nutritionist teaches the plate method to a patient with type 2 diabetes. How should the plate be divided?
A.Half non-starchy vegetables, a quarter protein, a quarter carbohydrate foods
B.Half carbohydrate foods, a quarter vegetables and a quarter fresh fruit
C.Half protein foods, half vegetables and no carbohydrate foods
D.A third each of cereals, fruit and dairy products
Explanation: The diabetes plate method fills half the plate with non-starchy vegetables, a quarter with lean protein and a quarter with carbohydrate foods such as tortillas, rice or legumes, with water or a no-calorie drink. It gives portion guidance without detailed counting.
