1An asesor de fondos faces a conflict between what suits the client and a product the institution wants to push this quarter. According to the Código de Ética Profesional de la Comunidad Bursátil Mexicana, what must guide the recommendation?
A.The institution's quarterly commercial targets, provided the client signs the order
B.Whatever product the operadora's sales area has prioritized for distribution that month
C.A compromise that gives the client and the institution equal weight in the decision
D.The client's interest, ahead of the adviser's and the institution's
Explanation: Principle 3 of the Code, 'Haz prevalecer el interés de tu cliente', requires professionals to act transparently, impartially and in good faith without putting other interests first, and not to induce clients into business whose sole purpose is the professional's or the firm's benefit.
2Which of the following is an improper use of información privilegiada?
A.Adjusting a fund recommendation after reading the fund's published documento con información clave
B.Revising a portfolio after INEGI publishes an unexpectedly high monthly inflation figure
C.Recommending shares based on results heard in a private briefing, not yet disclosed
D.Reducing portfolio duration after Banco de México publishes a policy-rate increase
Explanation: Information about an issuer's eventos relevantes that has not been disclosed to the public through the exchange is información privilegiada (LMV Article 362). Article 364 prohibits those who hold it from trading, passing it on or recommending the affected securities, and principle 7 of the Code forbids negotiating or inducing others to negotiate on it.
3Which conduct breaches principle 2 of the Code, 'Actúa con base en una conducta profesional íntegra que permita el desarrollo transparente y ordenado del mercado'?
A.Executing purchase orders at the valuation price determined by the sociedad valuadora
B.Entering simulated operations that create a false appearance of volume or demand
C.Recommending an equity fund to an aggressive client whose profile allows it
D.Telling a client that a CETES fund is still exposed to interest-rate risk
Explanation: Principle 2 requires professionals not to take part in activities that create false conditions of supply or demand, alter prices through deceit or rumor, or do not derive from the free interaction of supply and demand. Article 370 of the Ley del Mercado de Valores likewise prohibits simulated operations in the volume or price of securities.
4A caller identifying himself as a business partner of a client asks an asesor for the client's fund balances to 'close a deal'. What should the asesor do?
A.Provide the balances if the caller can correctly state the client's account number
B.Provide only an approximate range of the balances so that no exact figure is disclosed to him
C.Decline, because he is not the client, an authorized person or a competent authority
D.Provide the balances if the client's spouse confirms the caller's request by phone
Explanation: Principle 6 of the Code requires keeping client and account information confidential and providing it only upon an express, founded and motivated requirement of competent authorities or self-regulatory entities, besides the client and persons the client has authorized. Knowing an account number does not give a third party any right to the information.
5An asesor knows that several clients will buy the same fund series tomorrow and considers buying for his own account first. What does the Code say?
A.He may buy first, provided his order is smaller than the combined client orders
B.He may buy first if he discloses the trade to the compliance area afterward
C.He may buy first because fund shares are priced only once at the end of the day
D.He may not use knowledge of client orders for his own or anyone else's benefit
Explanation: Principle 6 of the Code prohibits using information about the orders one handles to obtain a benefit for oneself, the firm or any third party, and principle 4 requires avoiding conflicts between personal and client interests. Firms must also have personal-trading and conflict rules for their staff.
6When showing a client the historical performance of a renta variable fund, which practice is correct?
A.Showing the best three years only, so the client sees the fund's potential
B.Showing performance net of costs and warning that past returns do not guarantee future results
C.Promising that the fund will beat inflation by five points because it did so in the last five years
D.Showing gross returns before fees because they better reflect the manager's skill
Explanation: Annex 7 of the CNBV investment-services provisions requires references to historical performance to state whether costs were considered, to be calculated after costs, and to warn that past returns do not guarantee future performance. Principle 8 of the Code forbids guaranteeing returns that do not derive from the nature of the instruments.
7An operadora offers an asesor a trip abroad if he places a set amount of one specific debt fund this quarter. What does principle 4 of the Code, 'Evita los conflictos entre tu interés personal y el de terceros', require?
A.He may accept the trip if the fund carries an AAA credit rating
B.He may accept the trip if he tells clients about it once the quarter ends
C.He must decline it, since it could compromise his objectivity
D.He may accept the trip if his employer's policy allows travel gifts of any amount
Explanation: Principle 4 states that professionals may not offer, give, request or accept incentives that create a personal commitment and could reduce their objectivity in decisions related to whoever offered the incentive. A quota-linked trip ties his recommendations to a third party's interest instead of the client's.
8The Code lists 'diligencia' among the general ethical principles. Which behavior best reflects it for an asesor de fondos?
A.Studying a fund's prospectus, regime, risks and costs before recommending it
B.Answering client calls quickly, even when the answer has not been checked
C.Recommending the funds with the highest recent returns without reviewing their risk
D.Executing client requests immediately without explaining the product's risks
Explanation: Diligence means acting with the care and preparation the task requires. Principle 1 of the Code also requires professionals to have broad knowledge of the applicable rules, and the investment-services provisions require staff giving advice to know the prospectuses and the product profiles they recommend.
9Demand for a new fund series exceeds the amount available for the asesor's clients. How should the available shares be allocated?
A.To the clients who pay the highest advisory fee, since they generate the most income
B.To the clients who are relatives or friends of the branch's executives
C.To the institution's own account first, reselling the shares to clients later
D.By an objective, pre-set rule, such as pro rata or order of receipt, applied equally
Explanation: Principle 3 of the Code requires executing client instructions under equal treatment and opportunity and allocating operations transparently and according to the rules, supported by firm mechanisms for the registration, execution and allocation of operations.
10An asesor notices a client transaction that does not match the client's declared activity and has no apparent economic justification. What should the asesor do?
A.Warn the client that the account is being investigated so he can explain
B.Refuse the transaction but keep the cash on deposit without recording it
C.Wait until the client repeats the same pattern at least three times before reporting it
D.Report it internally as a possible operación inusual, without alerting the client
Explanation: Under anti-money-laundering rules, a transaction inconsistent with the client's profile and activity without apparent justification is a potential operación inusual. Staff must report it internally so the Comité de Comunicación y Control and Oficial de Cumplimiento can analyze and, where appropriate, report it to the authorities through the CNBV, and must not alert the client.

AMIB Asesor de Fondos: Suggested Study Strategy

1Treat Ética and Fondos de Inversión as separate hurdles: each needs 600 points on its own.
2Review the CNBV investment-services rules closely: client and product profiles, reasonableness, Annex 6 securities and the Cliente sofisticado thresholds.
3Practice rate conversions: discount versus yield rates, real returns, effective rates and equivalent rates for different terms.
4Know the coupon mechanics of CETES, Bonos M, Udibonos and IPAB bonds, and how duration drives debt-fund price changes.
5Keep derivatives and risk practical: which position hedges which exposure, and what VaR does and does not tell you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between AMIB Serie 100 and Serie 150?

Serie 100 (Promotor de Fondos de Inversión) is a 185-question exam centered on promoting investment funds. Serie 150 (Asesor de Fondos de Inversión) is a broader 210-question exam that adds debt, equity, derivatives, financial math and economic analysis, reflecting the advice role.

How many questions are on the Serie 150 exam and how long is it?

Under the Guía de Certificación v8.3, the exam has 210 questions and lasts 4 hours 18 minutes. Guide v8.4, which applies from 26 October 2026, keeps the same number of questions and time.

What is the passing score for Serie 150?

You need at least 600 points on the 200 to 1,100 scale overall and at least 600 points in each mandatory area, Ética and Fondos de Inversión. A modular extraordinary exam covers the mandatory areas if you passed overall but failed one of them; otherwise you take an integral extraordinary exam.

What do I need before registering for the exam?

You must pass AMIB's course 'Ética Bursátil y Sanas Prácticas del Mercado de Valores', have a satisfactory credit history of at least five years in a Reporte de Crédito Especial issued within the last three months, sign the honorability statement, and submit your file through AMIB's online system at least 10 business days before the exam.

Why is this practice bank presented in English?

The official exam is given in Spanish. This bank is an English-language study adaptation for reviewing the concepts in the AMIB outline; it is not an official translation or format simulation, and it keeps key Mexican legal and market terms in Spanish.

How long is the Serie 150 certification valid?

The certification cycle is three years. You can renew it by retaking the exam, by accumulating 450 points during the cycle through AMIB-approved courses or professional experience, or under AMIB's professional-experience policy.
