1Solve the quadratic equation: 3x² - 7x - 6 = 0
A.x = -3 or x = 2/3
B.x = 3 or x = -2/3
C.x = 3 or x = -3/2
D.x = 9 or x = -2
Explanation: Look for two numbers with product 3 × (-6) = -18 and sum -7: they are -9 and 2. Split the middle term: 3x² - 9x + 2x - 6 = 3x(x - 3) + 2(x - 3) = (3x + 2)(x - 3) = 0. So x = 3 or 3x + 2 = 0, giving x = -2/3.
2Express as a single algebraic fraction in its simplest form: 2 / (x - 1) + 3 / (x + 2)
A.5 / (2x + 1)
B.(5x - 1) / ((x - 1)(x + 2))
C.(5x + 1) / ((x - 1)(x + 2))
D.(5x + 7) / ((x - 1)(x + 2))
Explanation: Find the common denominator (x - 1)(x + 2): 2(x + 2) / ((x - 1)(x + 2)) + 3(x - 1) / ((x - 1)(x + 2)) = (2x + 4 + 3x - 3) / ((x - 1)(x + 2)) = (5x + 1) / ((x - 1)(x + 2)).
3The function f is defined as f(x) = (3x + 4) / 5. Find the inverse function f⁻¹(x).
A.f⁻¹(x) = (5x + 4) / 3
B.f⁻¹(x) = (5x - 4) / 3
C.f⁻¹(x) = 5 / (3x + 4)
D.f⁻¹(x) = (3x - 4) / 5
Explanation: Let y = (3x + 4) / 5. Multiply both sides by 5: 5y = 3x + 4. Subtract 4: 5y - 4 = 3x. Divide by 3: x = (5y - 4) / 3. Replacing y with x gives f⁻¹(x) = (5x - 4) / 3.
4Line L₁ has equation 2y + 4x = 7. Line L₂ is perpendicular to L₁ and passes through the point (2, 5). What is the equation of L₂?
A.y = 0.5x + 4
B.y = -2x + 9
C.y = 2x + 1
D.y = -0.5x + 6
Explanation: Rewrite L₁ in slope-intercept form: 2y = -4x + 7 => y = -2x + 3.5. The gradient of L₁ is m₁ = -2. For perpendicular lines, m₁ × m₂ = -1 => m₂ = -1 / (-2) = 0.5. Using point-slope form with (2, 5): y - 5 = 0.5(x - 2) => y - 5 = 0.5x - 1 => y = 0.5x + 4.
5Points A, B, and C lie on a circle with centre O. Angle AOC is 110°. If B lies on the major arc AC, what is the size of angle ABC?
A.55°
B.70°
C.110°
D.125°
Explanation: According to the circle theorem, the angle subtended by an arc at the centre is twice the angle subtended by it at any point on the remaining circumference: angle ABC = 0.5 × angle AOC = 0.5 × 110° = 55°.
6In triangle ABC, side b = 8 cm, side c = 11 cm, and angle A = 60°. Calculate the length of side a to 1 decimal place.
A.10.8 cm
B.16.5 cm
C.9.8 cm
D.13.6 cm
Explanation: By the Cosine Rule: a² = b² + c² - 2bc cos A = 8² + 11² - 2(8)(11) cos 60° = 64 + 121 - 176(0.5) = 185 - 88 = 97. Side a = √97 ≈ 9.8488 ≈ 9.8 cm.
7The bearing of lighthouse L from ship S is 065°. What is the back bearing of ship S from lighthouse L?
A.245°
B.205°
C.155°
D.115°
Explanation: To find the back bearing when the forward bearing is less than 180°, add 180°: 065° + 180° = 245°.
8Vector p = (3, -4) and vector q = (-1, 2). Find the magnitude of the resultant vector 2p + 3q.
A.3.6
B.4.5
C.5.0
D.6.3
Explanation: Calculate 2p + 3q: 2(3, -4) + 3(-1, 2) = (6, -8) + (-3, 6) = (3, -2). Magnitude = √(3² + (-2)²) = √(9 + 4) = √13 ≈ 3.605 ≈ 3.6.
9Given the 2x2 matrix M = [[4, 2], [3, 2]], find the determinant of M.
A.2
B.4
C.6
D.8
Explanation: For a matrix [[a, b], [c, d]], the determinant is ad - bc. Here det(M) = (4)(2) - (2)(3) = 8 - 6 = 2.
10A solid cone has a base radius of 5 cm and a vertical height of 12 cm. Taking π = 3.142, calculate its total surface area.
A.282.8 cm²
B.267.1 cm²
C.204.2 cm²
D.314.2 cm²
Explanation: Slant height l = √(r² + h²) = √(5² + 12²) = √169 = 13 cm. Total surface area = base area + curved area = πr² + πrl = πr(r + l) = 3.142 × 5 × (5 + 13) = 15.71 × 18 = 282.78 ≈ 282.8 cm².

About the Cambridge SC Exam

The Cambridge School Certificate (SC) is the Grade 11 school-leaving qualification in Mauritius, based on Cambridge O Level examinations organised by the Mauritius Examinations Syndicate with Cambridge International. Candidates take several syllabuses in the October/November series, including Mauritius-specific English Language 1125 and Mathematics (Syllabus D) 4029. Each subject is graded A* to E, and a credit means grade C or better. Since 2025, Grade 12 entry needs at least three credits including an English Language pass, instead of five. This independent English-language MCQ bank is study practice for core SC subjects. It is not a Cambridge or MES paper and does not replace written, practical or speaking components.

Exam sponsor: Mauritius Examinations Syndicate (MES) with Cambridge International Education. The requirements and fees below concern the certification or admission exam, separate from our free practice resources.
