1On which side of the road must traffic normally travel in Malta?
A.On the left-hand side
B.On the right-hand side
C.In the centre unless approaching oncoming vehicles
D.On either side depending on the road layout
Explanation: Rule 122 of the Malta Road Code (2025) states that traffic in Malta must keep to the left-hand side of the road. Drivers keep to the left except when overtaking or turning right, and overtaking is normally done on the right.
2When approaching a roundabout in Malta, to which traffic must you normally give priority?
A.Traffic approaching from your right
B.Traffic approaching from your left
C.Traffic waiting to enter at the next entry after yours
D.No one, because traffic entering a roundabout has priority over circulating traffic
Explanation: Rule 215 of the Malta Road Code tells drivers reaching a roundabout to give priority to traffic approaching from their right, unless signs, road markings, or traffic lights direct otherwise. Traffic circulates clockwise, so vehicles coming from your right are already on the roundabout or about to cross your path.
3What is the general national speed limit for passenger cars in built-up urban areas in Malta?
A.30 km/h
B.50 km/h
C.60 km/h
D.80 km/h
Explanation: The speed-limit table in the Malta Road Code sets 50 km/h in towns and villages for private cars, unless signs show a different limit. Locally set limits, such as 30 km/h in some built-up areas, may be lower.
4What is the general maximum speed limit for cars on open roads outside built-up areas in Malta?
A.60 km/h
B.70 km/h
C.80 km/h
D.100 km/h
Explanation: The Malta Road Code's speed-limit table gives private cars a maximum of 80 km/h outside towns and villages, unless signs show a lower limit. The limit is an absolute maximum, not a target speed.
5What does a triangular road sign with a red border signify in Malta?
A.A mandatory instruction that must be obeyed
B.A prohibition forbidding a specific action
C.General route or tourism information
D.A hazard warning alerting drivers of danger ahead
Explanation: Under European and Maltese road signage standards, triangular signs with a red border and white or yellow background are warning signs that alert drivers to hazards ahead, such as bends, junctions, or pedestrian crossings.
6What does a circular road sign with a red border indicate to road users?
A.A positive instruction that must be followed
B.Advance warning of a temporary road hazard
C.Information about facilities or directions ahead
D.A prohibition or restriction telling you what you must not do
Explanation: Circular signs with a red border are regulatory prohibitory signs that specify what road users are forbidden from doing, such as 'No Entry', speed limits, or 'No Overtaking'.
7What is the meaning of a circular road sign with a solid blue background and white symbol?
A.A mandatory instruction giving a positive order
B.A warning of an impending road hazard
C.A prohibition against heavy goods vehicles
D.An advisory suggestion that can be disregarded
Explanation: Circular signs with a blue background give mandatory positive instructions that drivers must follow, such as 'Turn Left Ahead', 'Keep Left', or 'Roundabout Ahead'.
8What does a yellow box junction (criss-cross yellow lines) marked on the road mean?
A.You may enter whenever the traffic signal ahead is green
B.You may wait inside the box as long as you do not block a pedestrian crossing
C.It marks a loading area for commercial vehicles
D.You must not enter the box until your exit road or lane is clear, except when turning right and held up only by oncoming traffic or vehicles waiting to turn right
Explanation: Rule 197 of the Malta Road Code says you MUST NOT enter a box junction until your exit road or lane is clear. You may enter and wait when you want to turn right and are stopped only by oncoming traffic or other vehicles waiting to turn right.
9A yellow box is marked across the carriageway at a signal-controlled roundabout in Malta. When may you enter it?
A.Only if you can cross over it completely without stopping
B.Whenever your traffic signal is green, even if traffic ahead is queuing
C.When you want to turn right and are waiting only for oncoming traffic
D.Only when no pedestrians are waiting at the nearest crossing
Explanation: Rule 197 of the Malta Road Code adds a stricter rule for signalled roundabouts: you MUST NOT enter the box unless you can cross over it completely without stopping. The right-turn waiting exception applies to ordinary box junctions, not to boxes at signalled roundabouts.
10What is the legal minimum tyre tread depth for passenger cars in Malta?
A.1.0 mm across the entire tyre surface
B.1.6 mm across the central three-quarters of the tread around the entire circumference
C.2.0 mm on front tyres and 1.0 mm on rear tyres
D.3.0 mm across the shoulder of the tyre
Explanation: Annex 1 of the Malta Road Code requires cars, light vans, and light trailers to have a tread depth of at least 1.6 mm across the central three-quarters of the breadth of the tread and around the entire circumference.
