Frequently Asked Questions
How many questions are on the Mississippi barber exam?
The NIC National Barber Styling Theory Examination has 110 items, 100 of which are scored, with a 90-minute time limit.
What score do I need to pass?
Board Rule 6.2 requires a scaled score of no less than 70 for practitioner licensure. Instructor candidates need 75.
Is the barber exam different from the cosmetology exam?
Yes. The Mississippi definition of barbering at § 73-7-2(b) opens with shaving or trimming the beard, which the cosmetology definition omits. Cosmetology in turn covers eyebrow arching, epilation, and nail services, which barbering does not.
