1Before driving a bus, you review the previous driver's vehicle inspection report. According to the Louisiana CDL Manual, when should you sign that report?
A.As soon as you have read it, because your signature only shows that you received the report
B.Only if the previous driver listed no defects of any kind
C.Only if defects reported earlier have been certified as repaired or as not needing repair
D.Only after you finish your own route, so the report covers both shifts
Explanation: Section 4.1 says to review the previous driver's inspection report and sign it only if defects reported earlier have been certified as repaired or not needing repair. Your signature is your certification that the reported defects were fixed.
2Which tire condition does the Louisiana CDL Manual say the front wheels of a bus must not have?
A.Tubeless tires instead of tube-type tires
B.Recapped or regrooved tires
C.Exactly 4/32 inch of tread in every major groove
D.Tires from two different brands on the same axle
Explanation: Section 4.1.1 lists tires among the systems to check before driving a bus and states that front wheels must not have recapped or regrooved tires. Federal rules (49 CFR 393.75) likewise bar regrooved, recapped, or retreaded tires on the front wheels of a bus.
3Which set of emergency warning devices meets the Louisiana CDL Manual's requirement for a bus?
A.Two reflective triangles plus a flashlight with a fresh set of spare batteries
B.Two reflective triangles together with two liquid-burning flares
C.One reflective triangle for each axle, placed at the rear of the bus
D.Three reflective triangles, or at least six fusees, or three liquid-burning flares
Explanation: Section 4.1.1 says a bus must have the fire extinguisher and emergency reflectors required by law: 3 reflective triangles, or at least 6 fusees, or 3 liquid-burning flares. Any one of those complete sets satisfies the rule.
4When is a bus NOT required to carry spare electrical fuses?
A.When it is equipped with circuit breakers
B.When it operates only on intrastate routes
C.When the scheduled trip is shorter than 100 miles
D.When it has a second battery for the passenger systems
Explanation: Section 4.1.1 says a bus must have spare electrical fuses unless it is equipped with circuit breakers. Circuit breakers can be reset after they trip, so spare fuses are not needed.
5While checking the outside of a bus before a trip, you find an emergency exit and the restroom service panel open. What does the Louisiana CDL Manual tell you to do?
A.Leave the restroom service panel open for ventilation until the first stop
B.Leave the emergency exit unlatched so riders can get out quickly in a crash
C.Close only the emergency exit, because service panels do not affect safety
D.Close both before driving
Explanation: Section 4.1.2 says to close any open emergency exits as you check the outside of the bus, and to close any open access panels (for baggage, restroom service, engine, and so on) before driving. An open panel or exit can swing out, strike someone, or let a rider fall.
6According to Section 4 of the Louisiana CDL Manual, why should you always check the interior of a bus before driving?
A.People sometimes damage unattended buses
B.Federal law requires a passenger count before each trip
C.Interior lights must be tested before every early-morning run
D.An interior check replaces the need for an outside walk-around
Explanation: Section 4.1.3 explains that people sometimes damage unattended buses, so you should always check the interior before driving to ensure rider safety. Aisles and stairwells should be clear, and handholds, floor covering, signaling devices, emergency exit handles, and seats must be safe.
7Which item is on the Louisiana CDL Manual's list of bus interior parts that must be in safe working condition?
A.Onboard video screens and the public-address speakers for each row
B.Overhead reading lights above each passenger seat
C.Signaling devices, including any restroom emergency buzzer
D.The fare-box receipt printer and display
Explanation: Section 4.1.3 lists each handhold and railing, the floor covering, signaling devices (including the restroom emergency buzzer if the bus has a restroom), and emergency exit handles as interior parts that must be in safe working condition. All seats must also be securely fastened to the bus.
8What does the Louisiana CDL Manual require of the passenger seats on a bus?
A.They must be securely fastened to the bus
B.They must recline on trips longer than two hours
C.They must have a lap belt at every seating position
D.They must lift out for cleaning without tools
Explanation: Section 4.1.3 says the seats must be safe for riders and that all seats must be securely fastened to the bus. A loose seat can throw a rider forward in a hard stop or crash.
9What does Section 4 of the Louisiana CDL Manual say about driving a bus with an emergency exit door or window open?
A.It is allowed on hot days if the exit is propped open only a few inches
B.Never drive with an open emergency exit door or window
C.It is allowed when no rider is seated next to that exit
D.It is allowed in city traffic at speeds under 25 mph
Explanation: Section 4.1.3 states plainly that you should never drive with an open emergency exit door or window. The "Emergency Exit" sign on an emergency door must also be clearly visible.
10Your bus has a red emergency door light. When does the Louisiana CDL Manual say to turn it on?
A.Only when an emergency exit is actually opened
B.Only while passengers are boarding or leaving
C.At night or any other time you use your outside lights
D.Only when the bus is parked on a highway shoulder
Explanation: Section 4.1.3 says that if there is a red emergency door light, it must work, and you should turn it on at night or any other time you use your outside lights. That keeps the emergency door easy to locate in darkness or poor visibility.

About the LA CDL Passenger Exam

LA CDL Passenger: Suggested Study Strategy

1Read Section 4 of the Louisiana CDL Manual closely; it is short, and the Passenger test draws on Sections 2 and 4.
2Memorize the hazardous material rules: never Division 2.3 poison gas, liquid Class 6 poison, tear gas, or irritating material; no more than 100 pounds of solid Class 6 poison; and no more than 500 pounds total or 100 pounds of any one class.
3Know Louisiana's railroad rule under R.S. 32:173.1: stop 15 to 50 feet from the nearest rail, look and listen both ways, and never shift gears on the tracks.
4Practice the Section 2 following-distance rule: one second for each 10 feet of vehicle length, plus one second above 40 mph.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who needs the Louisiana Passenger (P) endorsement?

Drivers of a vehicle designed to carry 16 or more people, including the driver, must add the Passenger endorsement to their CDL or commercial learner's permit. It applies to buses in Class A, B, or C.

How many questions are on the Louisiana CDL Passenger test?

Louisiana OMV does not publish an item count or time limit for the Passenger knowledge test. You need 80% or higher to pass, and the manual says the test covers Sections 2 and 4.

What happens if I fail the Passenger knowledge test?

OMV Policy 10.00 (revised September 2026) allows one retake of a failed knowledge exam on the same day, if time allows. Suspected cheating voids prior scores, forfeits the $15 application fee, and requires a one-business-day wait.

Can I take the Louisiana CDL knowledge test in another language?

OMV Policy 10.00 says CDL knowledge tests are available in English, French, and Spanish on the automated system, and interpreters are not allowed. Confirm current options with OMV before you test.

What does Louisiana law require of buses at railroad crossings?

La. R.S. 32:173.1 requires buses carrying passengers and vehicles carrying passengers for hire to stop within 50 feet, but not less than 15 feet, from the nearest rail, look and listen both ways, and cross without shifting gears.

What restriction comes with a Louisiana passenger learner's permit?

A Louisiana commercial learner's permit with a Passenger endorsement carries restriction code 07. The permit holder may not carry passengers other than auditors and inspectors, test examiners, other trainees, and the accompanying CDL holder.
