About the KLAT Exam
The Korean Language Ability Test (세계한국말인증시험), known as KLAT and formerly the Korean Language Proficiency Test (KLPT), is a standardized Korean proficiency examination for non-native speakers, administered by KETS (Korea Educational Testing Service) and recognized by South Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. KLAT is a CEFR-aligned alternative to TOPIK: a single test session places examinees into one of six grades corresponding to CEFR levels A1 through C2. Standard KLAT for novice and intermediate examinees has three all-multiple-choice sections — Listening (듣기), Vocabulary & Grammar (어휘·문법), and Reading (읽기) — while the Advanced level replaces Vocabulary & Grammar with a Writing section, and the introductory B-KLAT contains only Listening and Reading. The test emphasizes practical communication for everyday life, social participation, and academic or professional activity in Korea, drawing on everyday topics, vocabulary, grammar and usage, reading of notices and articles, and listening to dialogues and announcements. The examination fee in South Korea is approximately 40,000 KRW, and score reports remain valid for 30 months from the test date. KLAT is offered about five times a year and its results are used for university admission, employment screening at Korean companies, and evaluation by government organizations.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is KLAT and how is it different from TOPIK?
KLAT (Korean Language Ability Test, 세계한국말인증시험) is a Korean proficiency exam for non-native speakers, administered by KETS (Korea Educational Testing Service). Unlike TOPIK, which is run by South Korea's National Institute for International Education, KLAT is explicitly aligned with the CEFR framework and places test takers into grades 1–6 corresponding to CEFR A1–C2 from a single test session. KLAT was formerly known as the KLPT (Korean Language Proficiency Test).
What sections are on the KLAT?
Standard KLAT for novice and intermediate levels has three all-multiple-choice sections: Listening (듣기), Vocabulary & Grammar (어휘·문법), and Reading (읽기). The Advanced level replaces Vocabulary & Grammar with a Writing section, and the introductory B-KLAT contains only Listening and Reading.
How much does the KLAT cost and how long are scores valid?
The KLAT fee for applicants in South Korea is approximately 40,000 KRW (2026); overseas fees are set by local testing centers. KLAT score reports are valid for 30 months from the date of the exam, after which a retake is needed for official purposes.
How often is the KLAT offered?
KLAT is administered about five times a year. Test dates and registration windows are published by KETS at kets.or.kr, with overseas sessions depending on the country and testing center.
What is KLAT used for?
KLAT scores are recognized by South Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and are used for Korean university admission, employment screening at Korean companies, and evaluation by various government organizations. Because it maps to CEFR levels, it can be presented as an internationally comparable measure of Korean ability.
How is the KLAT scored?
There is no single pass/fail line. Each section is scored and the combined total — out of 200 points on Standard KLAT — places the examinee into a grade from 1 (CEFR A1) to 6 (CEFR C2). Higher total scores earn higher grades, so the goal is to maximize your total rather than clear a fixed threshold.
