1In the CIA triad used in IPA Subject A-1 information-security questions, what does confidentiality require?
A.Systems must remain usable for authorized people even during a component failure
B.Every change to data must be digitally signed by a government certification authority
C.Stored records must be protected so that only authorized parties can read them
D.Backup copies must be stored in at least three geographically separate data centers
Explanation: Confidentiality means information is not disclosed to unauthorized individuals, processes, or systems. Availability is about continued authorized use, and integrity is about preventing unauthorized modification. IPA common papers treat confidentiality, integrity, and availability as distinct properties; extra geographic-backup or national-CA rules are not part of the triad definition.
2Under Japan's Act on the Protection of Personal Information (個人情報保護法), which statement about the purpose of use is correct?
A.A business may collect personal data first and decide the purpose of use after a year of profiling
B.Once personal data is stored, the original purpose of use may be expanded freely if the data stays inside Japan
C.The purpose of use must be specified as clearly as possible, and use beyond that purpose is restricted except where the Act allows
D.Purpose-of-use rules apply only to government agencies and never to private system-development vendors
Explanation: The Act requires specifying the purpose of use as clearly as possible and restricts use beyond that purpose except in statutory exceptions (for example, consent or another listed ground). Purpose limitation applies to private businesses that handle personal information, including vendors, not only to government agencies.
3In cloud-service models commonly tested in IPA common papers, what does SaaS (Software as a Service) provide to the customer?
A.Raw virtual machines and storage on which the customer installs its own operating systems and applications
B.A development and runtime platform where the customer deploys code but does not manage guest operating systems
C.A ready-to-use application running on the provider's infrastructure, consumed through a network interface
D.Only a physical cage and power in a data center, with no software or hypervisor included
Explanation: SaaS delivers a complete application as a service. IaaS supplies infrastructure such as VMs and storage. PaaS supplies a platform for customer-developed software. Colocation of racks and power is not a cloud service model.
4Under Japan's Copyright Act as tested in IPA legal questions, which statement about a computer program is correct?
A.A program is protected only after the author files it with the Japan Patent Office as a patent
B.Source code is protected, but object code copied from that source is never a copyrighted work
C.Copyright in a program lasts only until the first public release of the product
D.A program is protected as a copyrighted work; copyright arises without a registration formality
Explanation: Computer programs are copyrighted works under the Copyright Act. Protection arises automatically; patent registration is a different right and is not required for copyright. Both source and object forms can implicate reproduction rights, and the term is not limited to the first public release.
5In public-key cryptography, which key is intended to be disclosed to counterparties?
A.The private key used to decrypt or to create a digital signature
B.A one-time pad that must remain secret and the same length as the message
C.The public key used to encrypt for the owner or to verify the owner's signature
D.The session key after it has already been used to encrypt the payload
Explanation: In public-key (asymmetric) cryptography, the public key is distributed so others can encrypt to the owner or verify signatures. The matching private key must stay secret. One-time pads and reused session keys are different mechanisms.
6A relational table is in third normal form (3NF) when which condition holds, assuming it is already in 2NF?
A.Repeating groups are still stored in a single column as long as the primary key is numeric
B.Every attribute is determined only by attributes that are not part of any key
C.All foreign keys have been removed so that tables cannot be joined
D.Every non-key attribute depends on the whole candidate key and not on another non-key attribute
Explanation: 3NF requires that non-key attributes depend on the key, the whole key, and nothing but the key—so transitive dependencies on other non-key attributes are removed. First normal form already forbids repeating groups. Removing foreign keys would destroy relational integrity rather than achieve 3NF.
7What is a service level agreement (SLA) in IT service management as used in IPA common questions?
A.An informal chat log of incidents that the service desk may delete after 24 hours
B.A source-code escrow contract that transfers copyright to the customer on day one
C.A documented agreement stating measurable service targets such as availability or response time between provider and customer
D.A project charter that authorizes a one-time system development project
Explanation: An SLA records agreed service levels and how they will be measured between a provider and a customer. It is not an incident-chat log, not an escrow/copyright assignment, and not a project charter. IPA PM syllabus Ver.7.1 also lists SLA knowledge under procurement planning.
8In the IaaS cloud model, which responsibility typically remains with the customer?
A.Physical security of the provider's data-center building
B.Replacing failed disks in the provider's storage arrays
C.Installing and patching the guest operating system and applications on provisioned virtual machines
D.Operating the provider's hypervisor cluster firmware
Explanation: IaaS supplies compute, storage, and networking. The customer generally installs, configures, and patches guest OS and application software. Physical facility, storage-array hardware, and hypervisor firmware remain the provider's responsibility in the usual split.
9Why is a function-point estimate often preferred to a lines-of-code estimate early in a project?
A.Because function points count the number of developers assigned to the work
B.Because lines of code can be counted precisely before any design exists
C.Because function points size the software from user-visible elements such as inputs, outputs, enquiries, files, and interfaces, which can be derived from requirements before any code is written
D.Because function points are independent of requirements and therefore never change
Explanation: Function point analysis measures functional size from user-visible elements identified during requirements and external design, so an estimate is possible before implementation and is comparable across programming languages. Lines of code depend on language, style, and design decisions that do not yet exist. Function points do change when requirements change, which is why estimates are revised as scope firms up.
10What does a responsibility assignment matrix, such as a RACI chart, record?
A.The calendar dates on which each deliverable is due, replacing the schedule network
B.The monetary budget allocated to each work package, replacing the cost baseline
C.Which role is responsible, accountable, consulted, or informed for each work package or activity
D.The probability and impact of each identified risk, replacing the risk register
Explanation: A responsibility assignment matrix maps work packages or activities against roles and records what kind of involvement each role has, commonly Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, and Informed. It makes explicit who performs the work and who answers for it. It complements rather than replaces the schedule, the cost baseline, and the risk register.

Project Manager Examination: Suggested Study Strategy

1Stay inside IPA PM syllabus Ver.7.1 language (purpose, uncertainty, co-creation) rather than importing PMI process-group trivia as if it were IPA law.
2Work quantitative items: critical path, earned value (CPI/SPI), and contingency from stated data.
3Practice Japanese B-1/B-2 from IPA past papers; this English bank cannot replace essay writing.
4Remember 2026 CBT splits A and B across days; both still must be passed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the passing score for the IPA PM examination?

IPA requires at least 60 of 100 on Subjects A-1, A-2, and B-1, and Rank A on essay Subject B-2 (試験要綱 Ver.5.6). Multi-stage selection applies.

Is this the same exam as PMI PMP?

No. This is Japan's national Project Manager Examination administered by IPA. PMI PMP is a separate credential with its own body, fee, and format.

How is the 2026 examination structured?

Japanese CBT in the late window: A-1 30 MCQs/50 min, A-2 25 MCQs/40 min, B-1 3 descriptive/90 min (answer 2), B-2 2 essays/120 min (answer 1). A group and B group are on separate days.

Are these OpenExamPrep practice questions official IPA exam questions?

No. IPA administers the official Japanese examination. This bank is independent English MCQ study on published syllabus topics, not an essay simulation.

Is the exam changing after 2026?

IPA states that the current examination system ends with the FY2026 (令和8年度) administration and that a new examination system is planned from FY2027, following the METI/IPA review of the exam-division structure. FY2026 is also the year every division moved to CBT, and IPA no longer publishes live CBT questions. This practice set is built from the current published syllabus, so confirm IPA's 試験制度の見直し page before planning a sitting beyond FY2026.
