About the ISEE Lower Level Exam
The ISEE Lower Level is a standardized admissions test for students currently in grades 4–5 who are applying to grades 5–6 at independent and private schools. Verbal Reasoning
Two question types: synonyms (choose the word closest in meaning to the given word) and sentence completion (choose the word that best fills the blank). Tests grades 4–5 vocabulary, prefix/suffix/root knowledge, and the ability to use context to determine word meaning.
Quantitative Reasoning
Multi-step word problems and logical math reasoning covering number patterns, fractions, ratios, probability, basic algebra, and estimation. Tests mathematical thinking rather than rote computation. Calculators are not permitted.
Reading Comprehension
Five passages of 200–350 words each (narrative and informational types), with 5 questions per passage. Question types include main idea, supporting detail, vocabulary in context, inference, author's purpose, mood, tone, and sequence of events.
Mathematics Achievement
