1Which device is primarily used as the brain of a computer that executes instructions?
A.CPU (Central Processing Unit)
B.Monitor
C.Printer
D.Speaker
Explanation: The CPU fetches, decodes, and executes instructions; it is the primary processing unit. Monitors, printers, and speakers are output/peripheral devices, not the instruction engine.
2RAM is best described as:
A.Permanent storage that never loses data without power
B.Volatile memory used for temporary storage while programs run
C.Only used to print documents
D.A type of optical disc
Explanation: RAM is volatile working memory: it holds running programs and data and loses contents when power is cut. Long-term files live on HDD/SSD storage.
3Which of the following is an input device?
A.Monitor
B.Speaker
C.Keyboard
D.Projector
Explanation: A keyboard provides input. Monitors, speakers, and projectors primarily deliver output to the user.
4Which storage device typically provides the largest long-term capacity among common PC options listed?
A.CPU cache
B.Registers inside the CPU
C.A single USB flash drive of fixed tiny size only
D.Hard disk drive (HDD) or SSD used as main secondary storage
Explanation: HDD/SSD secondary storage holds large persistent data. CPU cache and registers are tiny high-speed memories for immediate processing.
5Software that controls hardware and provides a platform for applications is called:
A.System software (for example, an operating system)
B.Application software such as a game only
C.A single Word document
D.A printer cartridge
Explanation: System software such as an OS manages hardware and hosts applications. A game or a single document is application content, not the OS.
6Which unit measures processor speed in modern computers?
A.Litres
B.Hertz (commonly GHz for CPU clock speed)
C.Pixels only
D.Amperes only
Explanation: CPU clock rate is measured in hertz (often GHz). Litres, pixels, and amperes measure unrelated quantities.
7In digital computing, a bit is:
A.Exactly 8 megabytes
B.A type of printer
C.The smallest unit of digital data, representing 0 or 1
D.A network cable
Explanation: A bit is a binary digit (0 or 1)—the smallest unit of digital data. Bytes and larger units are multiples of bits.
8How many bits are there in one byte?
A.2
B.16
C.1024
D.8
Explanation: One byte equals eight bits by standard definition used in computer fundamentals.
9Which of these is primarily an output device?
A.Monitor
B.Microphone
C.Scanner
D.Mouse
Explanation: A monitor displays visual output. Microphones, scanners, and mice are input devices.
10Firmware is best described as:
A.A printed user manual
B.Software stored in non-volatile memory on a device that helps start and control it
C.A cloud-only spreadsheet
D.A social media account
Explanation: Firmware is software kept in non-volatile memory on a device (for example BIOS/UEFI) that initializes and helps control the hardware. It is not a paper manual or cloud file.
