About the Hungary KRESZ DE Exam
The Hungary Category DE driving licence authorizes holders of Category D bus licences to operate a rigid Category D bus towing a trailer exceeding 750 kg maximum authorized mass. It does not govern articulated buses, which belong under Category D. Under the current KAV curriculum effective 1 October 2024, candidates take two separate computer theory examinations: Kozlekedesi alapismeretek (K), with 25 questions, 35 points, 30 required, and 25 minutes; and Szerkezeti es uzemeltetesi ismeretek (Szu), with 25 questions, 25 points, 21 required, and 25 minutes. A 35-minute routine examination and a 60-minute on-road driving examination are also mandatory. This practice bank is an independent English-language MCQ study adaptation for the theory content; it is not an official translation or a substitute for practical training and is not affiliated with or endorsed by KAV.

Frequently Asked Questions
What vehicles does the Hungary Category DE driving licence cover?
Category DE authorizes driving a combination of a Category D towing vehicle (a bus designed and constructed for the carriage of more than 8 passengers in addition to the driver) and a trailer whose maximum authorized mass exceeds 750 kg. It applies to rigid buses towing luggage, ski, equipment, or transport trailers, but does not apply to articulated buses (which fall under Category D).
How many theory exam subjects and questions are required for Hungary Category DE?
According to the official KAV theory examination table (Row 12), Category DE requires two computer-based theory subjects: Kozlekedesi alapismeretek (K) with 25 questions (35 points) and Szerkezeti es uzemeltetesi ismeretek (Szu) with 25 questions (25 points). Candidates take 50 questions in total across both subjects.
Why is the Munkavedelem (M) theory subject exempt for Category DE?
Under KAV regulations, candidates qualifying for Category DE must already hold a valid Category D licence, where the occupational health, safety, fire protection, and cargo transport subject (M) has already been successfully examined and certified.
What are the passing scores and time limits for Category DE theory tests?
For K (Kozlekedesi alapismeretek), the test lasts 25 minutes and candidates must achieve at least 30 out of 35 points. For Szu (Szerkezeti es uzemeltetesi ismeretek), the test lasts 25 minutes and candidates must achieve at least 21 out of 25 points. In total, a candidate needs 51 out of 60 points to pass both required subjects.
What are the speed limits for a bus towing a trailer in Hungary?
Under Hungarian KRESZ regulations, vehicle combinations (including a bus towing a trailer) are restricted to a maximum speed of 80 km/h on motorways (autopalya), 70 km/h on express roads (autout) and other rural roads outside built-up areas, and 50 km/h in built-up areas (lakott teruleten belul). Special 100 km/h bus authorizations (Tempo 100) are invalidated when a bus is towing a trailer.
What is the maximum permissible length for a bus-and-trailer combination in Hungary?
Under Hungarian road vehicle dimensional regulations (6/1990 KöHÉM decree), the maximum permissible overall length for a vehicle combination consisting of a motor vehicle and a drawbar trailer is 18.75 meters.
May passengers travel inside a trailer towed by a bus?
No. A luggage, ski, equipment, or freight trailer used in a DE bus combination is not an approved passenger compartment, so passengers must remain in the bus.
How much does the KAV Category DE theory examination cost?
Under the 2026 KAV fee schedule, each commercial vehicle computer-based theory examination subject costs HUF 12,700. Because Category DE requires two theory subjects (K and Szu), the total theory exam fee is HUF 25,400.
