The Državna matura examination in German Language (Njemački jezik) is the standardized national exit and university entrance examination administered throughout the Republic of Croatia by the National Centre for External Evaluation of Education (Nacionalni centar za vanjsko vrednovanje obrazovanja - NCVVO), established pursuant to the Pravilnik o polaganju državne mature (NN 56/2026). As a recognized foreign language examination, candidates choose between Higher Level A (viša razina, calibrated to CEFR level B2) and Basic Level B (osnovna razina, calibrated to CEFR level A2+). Level A totals 85 scoreable points across a 180-minute sitting divided into three distinct examination components: Reading Comprehension and Use of German (Leseverstehen und Sprachbausteine, 70 minutes), Listening Comprehension (Hörverstehen, approximately 35 minutes via standardized CD broadcast), and Written Expression (Schreiben, 75 minutes for an argumentative essay or formal communicative text). No. Dictionaries, reference grammar sheets, electronic translators, and mobile devices are strictly prohibited in all parts of the examination. Candidates are provided only with official exam booklets and answer sheets.
How is the writing component (Schreiben) evaluated?
The essay is assessed by two independent external examiners using a standardized NCVVO rubric across four criteria: task achievement (Izvršenje zadatka), coherence and cohesion (Povezanost i koherentnost teksta), vocabulary range and accuracy (Vokabular), and grammatical structures and correctness (Gramatika). Discrepant scores are reviewed by a chief evaluator.
Are points deducted for incorrect answers on the multiple-choice items?
No. There is no negative marking on the Croatian Državna matura. Incorrect or unanswered questions receive 0 points. Candidates should attempt every single question.
When are the exam sessions held and how are results published?
The regular summer session (ljetni rok) occurs in June, with preliminary and final results published in July on the central Postani-student portal. The autumn re-sit session (jesenski rok) takes place in late August and early September.
