About the EIKEN Grade Pre-2 Plus Exam
EIKEN Grade Pre-2 Plus is a new grade introduced by the Eiken Foundation of Japan in the 2025 academic year and first administered in the 2025 first session. It sits between Grade Pre-2 and Grade 2, targeting upper-secondary learners at the upper band of CEFR A2 with a recommended vocabulary of about 4,000-4,500 words. The first stage combines a four-option multiple-choice Reading section of 31 items, a Listening section of 30 items played once, and two Writing tasks (an English summary and an opinion composition). The second stage is a one-on-one speaking interview of about 7 minutes that includes reading a passage aloud, describing a three-frame illustration and giving opinions. Pass or fail is decided on the EIKEN CSE score rather than a fixed raw mark, and the grade shares Grade 2's test format with slightly easier content so candidates can step up gradually. This practice set covers only the first-stage Reading and Listening multiple-choice items.
