1Complete the sentence with the correct form: «Espero que ___ buen viaje.» (I hope you have a good trip.)
A.tengas
B.tienes
C.tendrás
D.tuviste
Explanation: After «esperar que», Spanish requires the subjuntivo because the sentence expresses a wish about something the speaker cannot control, not a statement of fact. The presente de subjuntivo of «tener» for tú is «tengas». Wishes, emotions, value judgments and doubt all trigger the subjuntivo in subordinate clauses introduced by «que».
2Which introductory phrase must be followed by a verb in the subjuntivo?
A.Sabemos que…
B.Es importante que…
C.Es verdad que…
D.Creo que…
Explanation: «Es importante que» is an impersonal value judgment, and such expressions always require the subjuntivo in the following clause. Impersonal expressions that state facts (es verdad que, es cierto que) take the indicative, while those that evaluate or influence (es importante, es mejor, es necesario) take the subjuntivo.
3Complete the sentence: «Te llamo cuando ___ a casa.» (I'll call you when I get home.)
A.llegué
B.llegaba
C.llegue
D.llego
Explanation: After «cuando», Spanish uses the subjuntivo when the action lies in the future and has not yet happened. Since the arrival home is still ahead, «llegue» (presente de subjuntivo) is required. The indicative after «cuando» is used for habitual or already completed actions.
4Complete the sentence: «No creo que ___ verdad lo que dice.» (I don't think what he says is true.)
A.es
B.será
C.fue
D.sea
Explanation: Negated verbs of opinion such as «no creer que» express doubt and are followed by the subjuntivo, here «sea». In the affirmative («creo que es verdad») the indicative is used because the speaker presents the content as true. This affirmative/negative contrast is a core LehrplanPLUS grammar point.
5Complete the sentence: «Busco un hotel que ___ piscina.» (I'm looking for a hotel that has a pool.)
A.tenga
B.tiene
C.tenía
D.tendrá
Explanation: In relative clauses, the subjuntivo is used when the antecedent is indefinite, unknown or not (yet) existing: the speaker is not thinking of a specific hotel but of any hotel with a pool. If the speaker had a concrete hotel in mind, the indicative («que tiene piscina») would be used. This contrast is explicitly part of the LehrplanPLUS Q-phase grammar.
6What is the correct first person singular of «comer» in the imperfecto de subjuntivo?
A.comía
B.comiera
C.comería
D.comiere
Explanation: The imperfecto de subjuntivo is formed from the third person plural of the pretérito indefinido: «comieron» minus «-ron» plus «-ra» gives «comiera» (the variant «comiese» is equally correct). This tense is needed for irreal conditions («si comiera más…») and wishes about the present. It belongs to the Jahrgangsstufe 13 grammar in LehrplanPLUS.
7Complete the sentence: «Si tuviera dinero, ___ por el mundo.» (If I had money, I would travel around the world.)
A.viajaré
B.viajo
C.viajaría
D.viajara
Explanation: An irreal condition about the present uses «si» + imperfecto de subjuntivo in the condition and the condicional in the main clause: «Si tuviera dinero, viajaría por el mundo.» The condicional ending «-ría» signals the hypothetical consequence. This pattern is a standard Jahrgangsstufe 13 structure.
8Complete the sentence: «Si hubieras estudiado más, ___ el examen.» (If you had studied more, you would have passed the exam.)
A.hubieras aprobado
B.aprobarías
C.habías aprobado
D.habrías aprobado
Explanation: An irreal condition about the past uses «si» + pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo («hubieras estudiado») and the condicional compuesto («habrías aprobado») in the main clause. The condicional compuesto is formed with «habría» + participio. This is the standard pattern taught for irreal past conditions in LehrplanPLUS Jahrgangsstufe 13.
9Which mood typically follows «quizás» when the speaker presents the event as merely possible, as taught at Abitur level?
A.The subjuntivo, as in «Quizás llueva mañana.»
B.The indicative, as in «Quizás llueve mañana.»
C.The condicional, as in «Quizás llovería mañana.»
D.The infinitive, as in «Quizás llover mañana.»
Explanation: Expressions of possibility such as «quizás», «tal vez» and «acaso» are standardly taught with the subjuntivo, because the speaker presents the event as uncertain: «Quizás llueva mañana.» Native speakers sometimes use the indicative after «quizás» when they consider the event very likely, but for the exam the subjuntivo is the safe, expected form.
10Which sentence uses the subjuntivo correctly after an expression of emotion?
A.Me alegra que viniste a la fiesta.
B.Me alegra que hayas venido a la fiesta.
C.Me alegra que has venido a la fiesta.
D.Me alegra que vienes a la fiesta.
Explanation: Verbs of emotion such as «alegrarse de que» require the subjuntivo in the subordinate clause. Because the visit happened before the feeling of joy, the perfecto de subjuntivo («hayas venido» = haya + participio) is used. The perfecto de subjuntivo refers to a completed action prior to the main clause.

About the BY Abitur Spanish (gA) Exam

Spanisch at grundlegendes Anforderungsniveau (gA) is a written Prüfungsfach of the Bavarian Abitur in the Aufgabenfeld sprachlich-literarisch-künstlerisch. The 2026 cohort is the first of the new nine-year Gymnasium (G9), examined on the LehrplanPLUS Gymnasium for Jahrgangsstufen 12/13. The written exam (GSO Anlage 8) combines a Hörverstehensaufgabe (30 of 285 minutes), a Textaufgabe chosen from two options, and a Sprachmittlungsaufgabe that mediates essential information between German and Spanish. The curriculum spans communicative competencies (listening, reading, speaking, writing, mediation), grammar (subjuntivo in presente and imperfecto, the past-tense system, ser/estar, por/para, pasiva refleja), vocabulary including Hispanoamerican variants, and Landeskunde: Spain's regions and multilingualism, its 20th-century history from Guerra Civil to Transición, Mexico and Central America, and the Cono Sur. This free bank offers 100 original English-framed MCQs for grammar, vocabulary, reading-judgment and Landeskunde practice only; it is not an official translation, not a format simulation, and cannot replace Spanish-medium writing, mediation and listening preparation.

BY Abitur Spanish (gA): Suggested Study Strategy

1Drill the subjuntivo by trigger category (wish, emotion, judgment, doubt, cuando-future, indefinite antecedent) rather than as isolated forms — then produce your own sentences in writing.
2Contrast past tenses with time markers: ayer/el año pasado → indefinido; hoy/esta semana → perfecto compuesto (Peninsular standard); habits and background → imperfecto; one step back → pluscuamperfecto.
3Build a two-column Landeskunde map: Spain (regions + co-official languages, Guerra Civil → Franco → Transición) and Latin America (Mexico/Central America, Cono Sur, migration to the USA, remesas).
4Keep a running false-friends and variants list: embarazada, actualmente, sensible, asistir on one side; plata, platicar, computadora, voseo on the other.
5Practise Sprachmittlung properly: take a short German article, extract the essential information and reformulate it in Spanish for a defined audience — mediation is not word-for-word translation.
6Use the ISB Illustrierende Prüfungsaufgaben for authentic task formats and timing; use this MCQ bank for targeted grammar, vocabulary, reading and Landeskunde drills only.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the official Bavarian Spanish Abitur a multiple-choice test?

No. The written gA exam consists of a Hörverstehensaufgabe, a Textaufgabe chosen from two options, and a Sprachmittlungsaufgabe — all constructed-response in Spanish (GSO Anlage 8). This bank is a free English-language MCQ study adaptation only and cannot replace those formats.

How long is the written gA Spanish exam?

GSO Anlage 8 sets 285 minutes total working time for modern foreign languages at grundlegendes Anforderungsniveau, of which 30 minutes are for the Hörverstehensaufgabe. The eA (Leistungsfach) duration is 315 minutes.

According to the Kultusministerium's 2026 schedule, all further gA Prüfungsfächer — including Spanisch — sat on 11 May 2026. The further eA subjects sat on 13 May 2026.

Which grammar topics matter most for the gA exam?

The LehrplanPLUS for Jahrgangsstufen 12/13 centres on the subjuntivo (presente, perfecto; in Jgst. 13 imperfecto and pluscuamperfecto for irreal conditions), the contrast of all past tenses, ser/estar including meaning-changing adjectives, por/para, relative clauses, pasiva refleja and verb constructions with gerundio and infinitivo (llevar, volver a, dejar de).

Which Landeskunde topics does the LehrplanPLUS prescribe?

For Jahrgangsstufe 12: future perspectives and working life, northern Spain with Galicia as a multilingual region, migration, Mexico and Central America including history since the conquest, and personalities of the Spanish-speaking world. For Jahrgangsstufe 13: media, Spain's east coast (Catalonia, Valencia, Balearic Islands), the Cono Sur, 20th/21st-century Spanish history (Guerra Civil, dictatorship, democracy), society in change, and language reflection including voseo and registers.

Does Bavaria use the IQB common task pool for Spanish?

No. In Bavaria the ländergemeinsame IQB pools apply only to Deutsch, Mathematik, Englisch, Französisch, Biologie, Chemie and Physik. Spanish Abitur tasks are Bavaria-specific; the ISB publishes Illustrierende Prüfungsaufgaben to illustrate their structure and level.

Is this question bank an official translation of the Abitur?

No. It is an independent, free English-language MCQ study adaptation aligned to the LehrplanPLUS content areas. It is not an official translation, not a simulation of the constructed-response format, and not a substitute for Spanish-medium writing, mediation, listening or Kolloquium practice.
