1A child is standing near the front of your school bus. How far forward does the DC manual say the front danger zone can reach?
A.As much as 30 feet, with the first 10 feet the most dangerous
B.As much as 10 feet, with the first 3 feet being the most dangerous
C.As much as 50 feet, with the last 10 feet the most dangerous
D.As much as 100 feet, measured from the front wheels
Explanation: Section 10.1 says the danger zones may extend as much as 30 feet from the front bumper, with the first 10 feet being the most dangerous. They also extend 10 feet from the left and right sides and 10 feet behind the rear bumper.
2Apart from the front, how wide is the danger zone along the sides of a school bus and behind it, per the DC manual?
A.5 feet on each side and 5 feet behind
B.10 feet on each side and 10 feet behind
C.10 feet on each side and 30 feet behind
D.20 feet on each side and 50 feet behind
Explanation: Section 10.1 says the danger zones extend 10 feet from the left and right sides of the bus and 10 feet behind the rear bumper, in addition to as much as 30 feet in front.
3The DC manual treats the left side of a school bus as always dangerous. What is the reason?
A.Because the emergency door is on the left
B.Because the fuel tank is on the left side
C.Because the driver cannot see that side in any mirror
D.Because of passing cars
Explanation: Section 10.1 says that, in addition to the 10-foot side zones, the area to the left of the bus is always considered dangerous because of passing cars.
4When properly adjusted, what should the outside flat mirrors on a school bus let you see?
A.100 feet behind the bus, the front bumper, and both front tires touching the ground
B.The whole front of the bus, from the bumper out to the point where your direct vision begins
C.Every student seat and the top of the rear window
D.200 feet (4 bus lengths) behind, along the sides, and the rear tires on the ground
Explanation: Section 10.1 says to adjust the outside flat mirrors so you can see 200 feet or 4 bus lengths behind the bus, along the sides of the bus, and the rear tires touching the ground.
5How far behind a school bus does the DC manual say the rear blind spot can reach?
A.10 to 20 feet, and never more than 30 feet
B.50 to 150 feet, and possibly up to 400 feet
C.200 feet, or about 4 bus lengths
D.No blind spot exists behind the bus if the flat mirrors are adjusted
Explanation: Section 10.1 says there is a blind spot directly behind the rear bumper that extends 50 to 150 feet and could extend up to 400 feet, depending on the length and width of the bus.
6Which view does Section 10 list for properly adjusted outside convex mirrors?
A.The top of the rear window and all students' heads
B.The front bumper at ground level and both front tires
C.Exactly 200 feet behind the bus in the lane you are in
D.At least one traffic lane on either side of the bus
Explanation: Section 10.1 says to position the convex mirrors to see the entire side of the bus up to the mirror mounts, the front of the rear tires touching the ground, and at least one traffic lane on either side of the bus.
7What does Section 10 warn about the view in convex and crossover mirrors?
A.They do not accurately show the size and distance of people and objects
B.They show only the area directly behind the rear bumper
C.They show people and objects at their true size and distance
D.They reverse the image, so a student standing on the left appears on the right
Explanation: Section 10.1 says both the convex mirrors and the crossover mirrors present a view of people and objects that does not accurately reflect their size and distance from the bus.
8What are the outside crossover mirrors on a school bus used to see?
A.Traffic approaching from 200 feet or more behind the bus in the next lane
B.Student activity inside the bus, including the seats right behind the driver
C.The front bumper danger zone you cannot see directly, plus the front side areas
D.The roof hatches and overhead clearance
Explanation: Section 10.1 says crossover mirrors, mounted on the left and right front corners, are used to see the front bumper danger zone that is not visible by direct vision and to view the danger zones to the left and right sides, including the service door and front wheel area.
9How should the crossover mirrors be adjusted so that there is no gap in what you can see in front of the bus?
A.So they point straight down at the front bumper only
B.So they show 30 feet ahead, starting where the hood ends
C.So they show only the right front tire
D.So the mirror view and your direct vision overlap
Explanation: Section 10.1 says to adjust the crossover mirrors to see the entire area in front of the bus from the front bumper at ground level to a point where direct vision is possible, and that direct vision and mirror view should overlap. They should also show both front tires touching the ground and the area from the front of the bus to the service door.
10How should the overhead inside rearview mirror of a school bus be positioned?
A.To show the stepwell and service door only
B.To show the road at least 200 feet behind the bus through the rear window
C.To show the front bumper area through the lower corner of the windshield
D.To show the top of the rear window in the top of the mirror and all students
Explanation: Section 10.1 says to position the overhead inside mirror to see the top of the rear window in the top of the mirror, and all of the students, including the heads of the students right behind you.

About the DC CDL School Bus Exam

The DC CDL School Bus Endorsement Test is the DC DMV knowledge test for drivers who operate a school bus with passengers. It draws on Section 10 of the DC CDL Manual: danger zones and mirrors, loading and unloading, emergency evacuation, railroad crossings, student management, ABS, and special safety situations. OpenExamPrep offers this free, independent practice bank for those topics and the DC licensing rules and District school bus law that apply to school bus drivers.

Exam sponsor: District of Columbia Department of Motor Vehicles (DC DMV). The requirements and fees below concern the certification or admission exam, separate from our free practice resources.

Assessment

DC DMV requires school bus applicants to pass the Passenger and School Bus knowledge tests (Section 10 of the DC CDL Manual) in English at the Deanwood Road Test/CDL Center, plus a road skills test in a school bus that includes a student discharge demonstration. Applicants must hold the learner permit at least 30 calendar days and complete ELDT before the road test, and a learner permit with S may not carry students. This bank is independent English-language multiple-choice practice by OpenExamPrep, not an official DC DMV test copy or simulation, and it does not replace the skills test.

DC CDL School Bus: Suggested Study Strategy

1Read Section 10 of the DC CDL Manual (2005 CDL Testing System, July 2014 version), and review Section 4 for the Passenger test you must also pass.
2Learn the stop sequence in order: amber lights at least 200 feet out, right signal 100 to 300 feet out, stop 10 feet from students, Park or Neutral with the parking brake, then red lights.
3Memorize the evacuation numbers: a safe place at least 100 feet off the road toward oncoming traffic, and at least 300 feet upwind if hazardous materials spill.
4At crossings, stop 15 to 50 feet from the nearest rail, open the service door and window, and allow your bus length plus 15 feet beyond the tracks.
5Plan for DC rules: English-only testing, a 60-minute limit, a three-day retest wait, and a 30-day learner permit hold before the road test.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions are on the DC CDL School Bus test, and what score passes?

DC DMV does not publish the number of questions. Federal rule 49 CFR 383.135 requires at least 80% correct on every CDL knowledge test, so aim for that standard across Section 10 of the DC CDL Manual.

Which tests do I need to drive a school bus in DC?

DC DMV's guide lists the Passenger knowledge test, the School Bus knowledge test, and a road skills test in a school bus, on top of the General Knowledge test for your CDL class. If the bus has air brakes, you also need the Air Brakes test to avoid an air brake restriction.

How long do I have, and what language is the test in?

DC DMV lists a 60-minute limit for CDL endorsement tests, and exceeding it counts as a failure. All DC CDL knowledge tests are in English only.

What must other drivers do when my DC school bus stops?

Under DCMR 18-2209, drivers approaching from any direction must stop at least 15 feet from a school bus with a flashing warning light or extended stop arm and stay stopped until the lights stop and the arm retracts. Oncoming drivers on a street with a median strip divider are exempt, so still check traffic before signaling students.

What happens if I fail the School Bus test?

You must wait three calendar days and may retest on the fourth day. If you fail six times within 12 months, you cannot take a seventh test until 12 months after the first failure. Each attempt costs $10.

Can I drive students while I hold a learner permit?

No. Under 49 CFR 383.25, a learner permit holder with the S endorsement may not operate a school bus with passengers other than auditors and inspectors, test examiners, other trainees, and the accompanying CDL holder. DC DMV also requires a 30-calendar-day permit hold before the road test.

Is this an official DC DMV practice test?

No. This is independent practice by OpenExamPrep, written in English multiple-choice format from the DC CDL Manual, DC DMV pages, DCMR 18-2209, and 49 CFR Part 383. It is a study aid, not an official DC DMV test copy or simulation, and it does not replace the road skills test.
