1Express the fraction 3/8 as a percentage.
A.37.5%
B.3.8%
C.24%
D.0.375%
Explanation: To convert a fraction to a percentage, multiply by 100. So 3/8 x 100 = 300/8 = 37.5%.
2Write the number 0.00056 in standard form (scientific notation).
A.5.6 x 10^-4
B.5.6 x 10^4
C.56 x 10^-5
D.5.6 x 10^-3
Explanation: In standard form the number is written as a x 10^n where 1 <= a < 10. Moving the decimal point four places to the right gives 5.6, so 0.00056 = 5.6 x 10^-4.
3Calculate the value of 2^3 x 2^4.
A.128
B.64
C.2^12
D.256
Explanation: When multiplying powers with the same base, add the exponents: 2^3 x 2^4 = 2^(3+4) = 2^7 = 128.
4What is the value of 3.6 / 0.04?
A.90
B.9
C.0.9
D.900
Explanation: Multiply numerator and denominator by 100 to remove decimals: 360/4 = 90.
5Simplify the surd expression sqrt(50).
A.5 sqrt(2)
B.25 sqrt(2)
C.2 sqrt(5)
D.10 sqrt(5)
Explanation: Factor out the largest perfect square: 50 = 25 x 2, so sqrt(50) = sqrt(25) x sqrt(2) = 5 sqrt(2).
6A car costs $24 000. The price is increased by 15%. What is the new price?
A.$27 600
B.$3 600
C.$25 500
D.$36 000
Explanation: An increase of 15% means the new price is 115% of the original: 24 000 x 1.15 = 27 600.
7A man invests $5 000 at 4% simple interest per annum. How much interest does he earn after 3 years?
A.$600
B.$200
C.$620
D.$5 600
Explanation: Simple interest = (P x R x T)/100 = (5000 x 4 x 3)/100 = 60000/100 = $600.
8A television marked at $1 200 is sold at a discount of 20%. How much does a customer pay?
A.$960
B.$240
C.$1 000
D.$1 440
Explanation: A 20% discount means the customer pays 80% of the marked price: 1200 x 0.80 = $960.
9A shopkeeper buys an item for $80 and sells it for $100. What is the percentage profit?
A.25%
B.20%
C.80%
D.120%
Explanation: Profit = 100 - 80 = $20. Percentage profit = (profit/cost price) x 100 = (20/80) x 100 = 25%.
10If US$1 = JA$155, how many Jamaican dollars are equivalent to US$40?
A.JA$6 200
B.JA$3 875
C.JA$195
D.JA$620
Explanation: Multiply the US dollar amount by the exchange rate: 40 x 155 = JA$6 200.

About the CSEC Mathematics Exam

CSEC Mathematics is the General Proficiency mathematics qualification of the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC), sat mainly by Form 5 secondary students and private candidates across the Caribbean in the January and May-June sittings. The assessment has three components: Paper 1, an electronically delivered set of 60 compulsory multiple-choice questions worth 30% of the grade; Paper 2, a written structured and extended-response paper worth 50%; and the School-Based Assessment (or Paper 3/2 for private candidates) worth 20%. The syllabus is organised into sections covering number theory and computation, consumer arithmetic, sets, measurement, statistics, algebra, relations, functions and graphs, geometry, trigonometry, vectors and matrices. Each paper is marked against three profiles - Knowledge, Comprehension and Reasoning - and overall results use a six-point grade scale from I to VI.

CSEC Mathematics Study Tips from Top Performers

1Practise Paper 1 timing: 60 questions in 90 minutes is about 90 seconds per question, so move past hard items and return to them, since there is no penalty for guessing.
2Memorise the formulas that are NOT on the provided sheet, such as the quadratic formula application steps, trigonometric ratios and the laws of indices, so you do not lose time deriving them.
3Drill consumer arithmetic - hire purchase, simple and compound interest, profit/loss percentages and currency exchange - because these recur every sitting and are quick marks once the method is automatic.
4Be precise with sets and Venn diagrams: label the universal set, identify intersection and union regions, and translate worded conditions into set notation before counting.
5For geometry and trigonometry, sketch the figure, mark known angles and sides, and choose between SOHCAHTOA, the sine rule and the cosine rule based on what is given.
6Work through official CXC specimen and past papers under exam conditions, then check answers against the mark scheme to find recurring careless errors in signs and units.
