About the MEP EDAD Bachillerato Exam
The Bachillerato de Educación Diversificada a Distancia (EDAD) is Costa Rica's open-modality secondary school completion programme, administered by the Ministerio de Educación Pública through the Dirección de Gestión y Evaluación de la Calidad (DGEC) under convenio with ICER. It is open to people aged 16 or over who have completed III Ciclo (noveno año) and leads to the official Bachiller en Educación Media title. Since the 2024 reform, which eliminated the nota de presentación and the prueba comprensiva, candidates must pass two pruebas per subject — Prueba 1 on décimo año content and Prueba 2 on undécimo año content — across six subjects. This practice bank is an English-language MCQ study adaptation built from the DGEC tablas de especificaciones in force from convocatoria 02-2026. It is not an official translation, not a reproduction of any DGEC paper, and not a substitute for the Español Prueba 2 essay, which is handwritten and marked on a separate rubric. Spanish passages, sentences and answer options are kept in Spanish where Spanish is the skill being tested, and are explained in English.
Assessment
Six subjects: Español, Estudios Sociales, Matemáticas, Educación Cívica, a science (Biología, Física or Química) and a foreign language (Inglés or Francés). Passing Prueba 1 (décimo año content) in a subject is a legal prerequisite for enrolling in Prueba 2 (undécimo año content) in that subject. Each sitting lasts 3 hours. The Idiomas papers assess written comprehension (reading) only and are set in the target language.
Time Limit
3 hours (180 minutes) per prueba; convocatoria 02-2026 uses 8:30 a.m.–11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m. sittings across three exam days
Passing Score
70 or above on each individual prueba (Prueba 1 and Prueba 2) in all six subjects
Exam Fee
₡8,000 CRC per prueba, paid to the Asociación Instituto Costarricense de Enseñanza Radiofónica (ICER) (Ministerio de Educación Pública (MEP) — Dirección de Gestión y Evaluación de la Calidad (DGEC))

MEP EDAD Bachillerato Study Tips from Top Performers
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the MEP EDAD Bachillerato programme in Costa Rica?
Educación Diversificada a Distancia (EDAD) is an open-modality distance secondary graduation programme administered by Costa Rica's Ministerio de Educación Pública (MEP) through the Dirección de Gestión y Evaluación de la Calidad (DGEC) under convenio with ICER. It allows people aged 16 or over who have completed III Ciclo (noveno año) to earn the official Bachiller en Educación Media credential.
What changed under the 2024 EDAD reform?
From 2024 MEP eliminated both the nota de presentación and the prueba comprensiva. Graduation now requires passing two pruebas per subject: Prueba 1 on décimo año content and Prueba 2 on undécimo año content, in all six required subjects.
Can I take Prueba 2 before passing Prueba 1 in a subject?
No. DGEC states that passing Prueba 1 in a subject is a prerequisite for enrolling in Prueba 2 in that same subject. Candidates who already passed décimo año subjects in the formal school system, or subjects in Bachillerato por Madurez Suficiente, can apply for official recognition instead.
How many questions are on each EDAD prueba and how long is it?
The DGEC tablas de especificaciones for convocatoria 02-2026 set 60 selección única items for each prueba in Matemáticas, Estudios Sociales, Educación Cívica, Ciencias and Idiomas, and for Español Prueba 1. Español Prueba 2 is different: 50 selección única items plus a handwritten essay. From 2026 every selección única item has four options with one correct answer. Each sitting lasts 3 hours.
Is any part of the EDAD exam not multiple choice?
Yes. Español Prueba 2 includes a Composición y ortografía block in which the candidate writes an essay on one of four proposed titles. It is marked out of 100 against a 15-criterion rubric covering legibility, accentuation and the tilde diacrítica, spelling, capitalisation, punctuation, agreement, verb tenses, prepositions, paragraph structure, argument validity and vocabulary. No multiple-choice bank can substitute for writing practice on that block.
What is the passing score and the fee for EDAD exams?
Candidates need a final mark of 70 or above on each individual prueba. The contribución por prueba is ₡8,000 CRC per test, paid to the Asociación Instituto Costarricense de Enseñanza Radiofónica (ICER) through Banco Nacional, BN Servicios or SINPE Móvil.
Which subjects does the EDAD curriculum include?
Six: Español, Estudios Sociales, Matemáticas, Educación Cívica, one science (Biología, Física or Química) and one foreign language (Inglés or Francés). This practice bank covers Biología as the science option and Inglés as the foreign-language option.
Is this practice question bank an official MEP/DGEC test or translation?
No. It is an independent English-language MCQ study adaptation written against the public DGEC tablas de especificaciones. The official examinations are administered on paper in Spanish by DGEC, except the Inglés and Francés papers, which are set in the target language. Nothing here reproduces a DGEC item, and the Español Prueba 2 essay cannot be practised through multiple choice.
