About the CPEIP ECEP (Chile) Exam
The Evaluación de Conocimientos Específicos y Pedagógicos (ECEP) is one of the two instruments of Chile's Sistema de Reconocimiento del Desarrollo Profesional Docente, created by Ley N° 20.903 and consolidated as the country's single teacher evaluation system by Ley N° 21.625 of 2023. CPEIP designs it and the Agencia de Calidad de la Educación applies and scores it. Each teacher sits a 60-question paper matched to their own nivel, asignatura or especialidad, testing disciplinary knowledge from the Bases Curriculares together with the pedagogical content knowledge described in the Estándares de Desempeño Profesional Docente, which are built on the four domains of the Marco para la Buena Enseñanza 2021. This bank is an English-language multiple-choice study adaptation of the pedagogical knowledge common to all ECEP pruebas.
Assessment
One 60-item multiple-choice cuadernillo per teacher, taking roughly two and a half hours, applied in person by the Agencia de Calidad de la Educación at an assigned venue. Items are allocated by the prueba's tabla de especificaciones across content dominios and across three levels of theoretical complexity (baja, media, mayor), plus anchor items carried over from earlier instruments. The ECEP a teacher sits must correspond to the Portafolio they registered for that year, per CPEIP's published coherencia Portafolio–ECEP table.
Time Limit
About 2 hours 30 minutes
Passing Score
No pass mark. Results are reported as categorías de logro A, B, C or D (article 19 M, Estatuto Docente as amended by Ley N° 20.903), set by standard-setting cut points on a 1.00–4.00 scale and combined with the Portafolio category, bienios of experience and the current tramo

CPEIP ECEP (Chile) Study Tips from Top Performers
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the CPEIP ECEP in Chile?
The Evaluación de Conocimientos Específicos y Pedagógicos is one of the two instruments of Chile's Sistema de Reconocimiento del Desarrollo Profesional Docente. It measures a teacher's disciplinary knowledge against the Bases Curriculares and their pedagogical knowledge for teaching that discipline, and its result feeds directly into progression through the Carrera Docente tramos.
How many questions are on the real ECEP and how long does it take?
Every ECEP instrument has 60 four-option multiple-choice questions, and CPEIP states that sitting it takes approximately two and a half hours. There is no deduction for wrong answers, so unanswered items are simply lost marks.
Is there one ECEP paper for everyone?
No. There is a separate prueba, with its own published temario, for each nivel, asignatura, especialidad or modalidad — covering educación parvularia, básica, media científico-humanista, media técnico-profesional, especial, personas jóvenes y adultas and lengua indígena. The prueba you sit must match the Portafolio you registered for, following CPEIP's published coherencia Portafolio–ECEP document.
Who administers and scores the ECEP?
CPEIP, the Ministry of Education's teacher-development centre, owns the instrument, while the Agencia de Calidad de la Educación assigns venues, applies the test in person and scores the answer sheets with an optical reader and specialised software before returning results to CPEIP.
How is the ECEP scored, and is there a pass mark?
There is no pass mark. Expert judges set cut points through standard setting, raw scores are converted to a 1.00–4.00 scale, and the final result is one of four categorías de logro — A, B, C or D — under article 19 M of the Estatuto Docente as amended by Ley N° 20.903. A result of A or B lets a teacher reuse it and skip the ECEP in later processes under article 19 Ñ.
Who has to sit the ECEP?
Teachers and educators in the tramos Acceso, Inicial and Temprano are required to sit the instruments of the Sistema de Reconocimiento; those in Avanzado, Experto I and Experto II may sit them voluntarily. Since Ley N° 21.625 the same single system applies to municipal, SLEP, subsidised private, administración delegada and jardín infantil staff alike.
Is this practice bank an official Chilean government test?
No. The official ECEP is written and sat in Spanish and is subject-specific. This bank is an independent English-language multiple-choice study adaptation covering the pedagogical knowledge, professional standards and education-law framework common to all ECEP pruebas. It is not an official translation, not an official temario, and not a simulation of any particular prueba.
