1Which of the following sentences adheres to standard English subject-verb agreement rules?
A.Neither the teacher nor the students were present at the morning assembly.
B.Neither the teacher nor the students was present at the morning assembly.
C.Neither the students nor the teacher were present at the morning assembly.
D.Neither the teacher or the students was present at the morning assembly.
Explanation: When subject elements are connected by 'neither... nor', the verb agrees in number and person with the nearer subject. Here, 'students' is plural and adjacent to the verb, so the plural auxiliary 'were' is grammatically correct.
2What is the correct passive voice transformation of: 'The principal announced the annual sports schedule'?
A.The annual sports schedule was announced by the principal.
B.The annual sports schedule has been announced by the principal.
C.The annual sports schedule had been announced by the principal.
D.The annual sports schedule is announced by the principal.
Explanation: The original sentence is in the simple past tense ('announced'). In the passive voice, simple past requires the past auxiliary 'was' (for singular subject 'the annual sports schedule') followed by the past participle 'announced'.
3Convert into reported speech: Sonam said, 'I will submit my history project tomorrow.'
A.Sonam said that he would submit his history project the following day.
B.Sonam said that he will submit his history project tomorrow.
C.Sonam told that he would submit his history project tomorrow.
D.Sonam said that he would have submitted his history project the next day.
Explanation: In indirect speech with a past reporting verb ('said'), 'will' shifts to 'would', the first-person pronoun 'I/my' becomes 'he/his', and the temporal adverb 'tomorrow' changes to 'the following day' or 'the next day'.
4Choose the correct preposition to complete the sentence: 'The Dzongkha master congratulated Pema ______ her outstanding performance.'
A.on
B.for
C.about
D.with
Explanation: In standard English, the verb 'congratulate' takes the preposition 'on' before the achievement or occasion (i.e., congratulate someone on something).
5What does the idiomatic expression 'to burn the midnight oil' mean in a study context?
A.To work or study late into the night
B.To waste valuable resources carelessly
C.To cause an accidental fire in the laboratory
D.To start an assignment at the very last minute without preparation
Explanation: 'To burn the midnight oil' historically referred to using oil lamps to read or work late at night, and idiomatically means working or studying diligently late into the night.
6Identify the subordinate clause in the following sentence: 'Although the weather in Paro was foggy, the morning flight landed safely.'
A.Although the weather in Paro was foggy
B.the morning flight landed safely
C.the weather in Paro was foggy
D.landed safely
Explanation: A subordinate clause begins with a subordinating conjunction (here, 'Although') and cannot stand alone as a complete sentence. 'Although the weather in Paro was foggy' functions as an adverbial clause of concession.
7Which word is the closest synonym for 'PRUDENT'?
A.Cautious
B.Reckless
C.Impulsive
D.Generous
Explanation: 'Prudent' means acting with or showing care and thought for the future, making 'cautious' or 'wise' the most accurate synonym.
8Complete the Third Conditional sentence correctly: 'If Karma ______ harder for the trial exam, he ______ the distinction mark.'
A.had studied; would have achieved
B.studied; would achieve
C.had studied; would achieve
D.would have studied; had achieved
Explanation: Third conditional sentences describe hypothetical past situations. The 'if' clause uses the past perfect tense ('had studied'), and the main clause uses 'would have' + past participle ('would have achieved').
9Which literary device is employed in the line: 'The weeping willows whispered secrets across the Mochhu river'?
A.Personification
B.Hyperbole
C.Oxymoron
D.Simile
Explanation: Personification attributes human qualities or actions (such as 'weeping' and 'whispering secrets') to non-human objects or natural elements.
10Three of the sentences below build their comparison as a simile. In which one is the comparison made as a metaphor instead?
A.The teacher's advice was a beacon of light in our final exam preparation.
B.The student ran as fast as a cheetah during the inter-house relay.
C.The thunder roared like an angry beast over the Thimphu valley.
D.The classroom was as quiet as a monastery library.
Explanation: A metaphor directly asserts that one thing is another to suggest a comparison without using connecting words such as 'like' or 'as'.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the passing mark for the BCSE Class X examination in Bhutan?

The pass mark in each subject is 40, and BCSEA's Operational Guidelines require a candidate to pass Continuous Assessment and the written examination separately with at least 40% in each. Promotion to Class XI requires meeting that standard in five or more subjects, which must include English, Dzongkha, and Mathematics.

What subjects are tested in the BCSE Class X board exam?

Every candidate sits seven subjects. English and Dzongkha are compulsory and each is examined in two papers, alongside Mathematics, Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology), History Civics & Geography, and electives such as Economics and ICT. Participating schools also offer TVET subjects with separate theory and practical papers.

In what language is the BCSE written?

All subjects are written in the medium of English except Dzongkha, the national language, and foreign-language papers taken by foreign candidates. This practice bank is in English only and does not cover the Dzongkha papers.

Is this practice bank identical to the official BCSE written exam?

No. The official BCSE papers use structured, short-answer, and extended-response questions written by hand, and each subject also carries 30 marks of school-based Continuous Assessment. This bank is an English-language MCQ study adaptation for testing syllabus knowledge and problem-solving, not a simulation of the official paper format.
