Bahrain's driving theory test is administered by the Ministry of Interior's General Directorate of Traffic and must be passed before the technical driving test. Its subject matter is fixed by Article 237 of the Traffic Law Implementing Regulation, but the GDT publishes no item count, time limit or pass mark. Applicants must be at least 18, hold a smart identity card, pass an eyesight examination and hold a temporary learner licence. Failing either test four times in one year bars a further attempt for six months.

1In the Kingdom of Bahrain, what does a circular traffic sign with a red border and a white background indicate?
A.A mandatory instruction that all drivers must obey
B.A prohibition or restriction that limits driver actions
C.Advance warning of a potential hazard on the road ahead
D.General tourist and geographical guidance information
Explanation: Under Bahrain and GCC traffic sign standards, circular signs featuring a red border on a white background are prohibitory or restrictive regulatory signs, indicating actions that drivers are forbidden from doing or specific limits.
2What is the meaning of a circular traffic sign with a solid blue background and a white arrow pointing straight ahead?
A.One-way street begins ahead
B.Vehicles must proceed straight ahead only
C.Entry is prohibited for all motor vehicles
D.You have priority over oncoming traffic
Explanation: A circular sign with a blue background and a white arrow is a mandatory regulatory sign requiring drivers to follow the direction indicated, which in this case means vehicles must proceed straight ahead only.
3What does an inverted triangular traffic sign with a red border and a white background signify at an intersection in Bahrain?
A.Stop completely and remain stationary for at least 3 seconds
B.Give way (yield) to vehicles on the intersecting or major road
C.You have right-of-way over all merging traffic
D.The road narrows to a single lane ahead
Explanation: The inverted triangle (pointing downward) with a red border is the international Give Way / Yield sign, requiring drivers to slow down and give priority to traffic traveling on the intersecting road before joining.
4What must a driver do when approaching a red octagonal traffic sign with the word 'STOP' in English and Arabic?
A.Slow down and proceed if no cross-traffic is visible within 50 meters
B.Come to a complete stop before the stop line and proceed only when clear and safe
C.Stop only if pedestrians or emergency vehicles are present at the crossing
D.Yield right-of-way while maintaining a slow rolling speed of under 10 km/h
Explanation: The STOP sign requires every vehicle to come to a full, complete halt behind the white stop line or intersection boundary, regardless of traffic density, and yield right-of-way before proceeding.
5What does a yellow box junction (yellow criss-cross grid painted on the road surface) indicate at intersections in Bahrain?
A.A designated parking zone for commercial delivery vehicles
B.An area drivers must not enter unless their exit road or lane is completely clear
C.A dedicated lane reserved exclusively for public transport buses and taxis
D.An acceleration lane allowing vehicles to overtake slow-moving traffic
Explanation: A yellow box junction is designed to prevent gridlock. Drivers must not enter the yellow grid unless their exit lane is clear so they can cross without stopping, with the sole exception of waiting to turn left when oncoming traffic is clear.
6Article 89 of Bahrain's Traffic Law Implementing Regulation defines the steady yellow (amber) light. What does it mean?
A.Accelerate to clear the junction before the light turns red
B.The vehicle must stop and must not pass the stop line, the line level with the signal pole, or the pedestrian crossing area; only if it cannot stop safely may the driver continue, and then with caution
C.It has the same meaning as a flashing yellow light
D.Traffic from the opposite direction now has priority
Explanation: Article 89 sets out each aspect in turn. Green means vehicles continue while taking care until the road is clear. Yellow appears after green and means the vehicle must stop and must not pass the stop line, the line level with the traffic signal pole, or the pedestrian crossing area; where it is not possible to stop safely, the driver may continue while taking care and caution. The green arrow indicates the directions the signal permits vehicles to travel in. Flashing yellow means the vehicle may proceed if the road is clear, with care and caution. Red means vehicles must stop and must not pass the stop line, the line level with the pole, or the pedestrian crossing.
7What does a solid single white line separating two lanes traveling in the same direction mean?
A.Lane changing is encouraged to balance traffic flow
B.Lane changing is discouraged or prohibited; drivers should maintain their lane
C.The lane to the right is reserved for heavy commercial trucks only
D.Traffic in both lanes must prepare to come to an immediate halt
Explanation: A solid white lane line indicates that lane changing is hazardous and prohibited or strongly discouraged. Drivers should stay within their lane, especially approaching junctions, tunnels, or curves.
8What does a flashing yellow (amber) traffic signal light at an intersection in Bahrain indicate?
A.The intersection is closed to all vehicular traffic
B.Proceed with caution, be prepared to stop, and yield right-of-way according to priority rules
C.The traffic light is out of service and drivers must always make a mandatory 5-minute stop
D.Speed up to clear the intersection before the signal turns red
Explanation: A flashing yellow light warns drivers of a hazard or an uncontrolled junction phase, instructing them to slow down, proceed with heightened caution, and yield to cross traffic or pedestrians.
9What does a green arrow displayed simultaneously with a solid red light at a traffic signal mean in Bahrain?
A.All traffic must stop regardless of the arrow direction
B.Vehicles may proceed only in the direction indicated by the green arrow, yielding to pedestrians
C.The signal system is malfunctioning and drivers must proceed straight ahead
D.U-turns are strictly permitted across all lanes
Explanation: A green filter arrow accompanying a red light allows drivers in the dedicated turn lane to proceed in the specific direction of the arrow (e.g., turning right or left), while traffic in all other lanes must remain stopped.
10What is the meaning of a triangular warning sign depicting two arrows pointing in opposite directions on the same roadway?
A.Divided highway begins ahead
B.Two-way traffic ahead on the same carriageway
C.Dual lane overtaking permitted on both sides
D.Mandatory roundabout junction ahead
Explanation: A triangular warning sign showing opposing parallel vertical arrows warns drivers leaving a one-way street or dual carriageway that they are entering a two-way two-lane road with oncoming traffic.

About the Bahrain Driving Theory Exam

The Bahrain driving theory test is the knowledge examination the General Directorate of Traffic conducts before the technical driving test, under Articles 236 to 238 of the Traffic Law Implementing Regulation issued by Minister of Interior Decision No. 154 of 2015. Article 237 defines its subject matter as traffic rules and etiquette, traffic signs and signals, and the parts and equipment of the vehicle. This page offers free English-language multiple-choice practice built from that scope, from Traffic Law No. 23 of 2014 as amended by Decree-Law No. 30 of 2025, and from the GDT's published licensing services. It is a study aid, not a simulation of the official test, whose format, length and pass mark the GDT does not publish; the official assessment is conducted in Arabic.

Assessment

A theoretical test set by the General Directorate of Traffic, taken before the technical (practical) driving test. Article 237 of the Implementing Regulation fixes its subject matter as traffic rules and etiquette, traffic signs and signals, and the parts and equipment of the vehicle. A candidate who fails the theoretical test may not sit the technical test.

Time Limit

Bahrain Driving Theory Study Tips from Top Performers

1Learn Article 44 as bands, not as single numbers: private cars 40 to 60 km/h inside cities other than ring roads and 60 to 100 km/h outside them, other vehicles 30 to 50 and 50 to 80 — with the sign fixing the figure inside the band.
2Article 55 uses two different distances from roundabouts, bridges, tunnels, junctions, pedestrian crossings and bus stops: ten metres for stopping, twenty metres for waiting. Mixing them up is the commonest error on this topic.
3Work through the Article 49 priority ladder in order — already in the roundabout, already in the junction, main road over side road, then from the right at intersections of main roads — rather than memorising a single 'give way to the right' slogan.
4Article 51 is the rule that overrides everything else: do not enter a junction you cannot clear, in spite of priority, a green light or any other permitting signal.
5Check every penalty figure against Decree-Law No. 30 of 2025, which replaced the opening words of Articles 45, 46, 47, 48, 49 and 52 and the second and third paragraphs of Article 50, and added Articles 47 bis and 51 bis.
6Treat any specific tint percentage, tread depth or hydrant distance you see quoted for Bahrain with suspicion — the Implementing Regulation states those standards in performance terms, not as published numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions are on the Bahrain driving theory test?

The General Directorate of Traffic does not publish the number of questions. Article 236 of the Traffic Law Implementing Regulation leaves the elements of the theoretical test, and its pass and fail rates, to the Directorate. Item counts quoted on commercial prep sites are not sourced to the GDT.

What is the passing score for the Bahrain theory test?

It is not published. The Regulation gives the Directorate the power to set pass and fail rates for both the theoretical and the technical tests, but the figures are not made public.

What subjects does the Bahrain theory test cover?

Article 237 of the Implementing Regulation fixes the subject matter as traffic rules and etiquette, traffic signs and signals, and the parts and equipment of the vehicle. For the private transport and motorcycle licence classes, and for the driving instructor licence, the test must also cover knowledge of Bahrain's geography, traffic directions and the locations of public and archaeological places.

What language is the Bahrain driving theory test conducted in?

Arabic is the official language of the assessment and of the GDT's own materials. The Directorate does not publish a list of other languages in which the test may be taken, so contact the Driving School directly if you need one. Our practice questions here are an English-language study adaptation, not an official translation.

What happens if I fail the theory test?

Article 241 requires you to retake the test you failed on the date the examiner sets. If you fail either the theoretical or the technical test four times within one year, you may not attempt that test again until six months have passed since your last attempt.

Can a foreign licence holder be exempted from the tests?

Article 242 allows the Directorate to exempt an applicant who holds a driving licence issued by a foreign government authority outside Bahrain from both tests or from one of them, without prejudice to its right to require a pass whenever it considers this necessary. The Directorate issues the list of recognised licences and may refuse recognition on a reciprocity basis.
