About the Defensie Selectie Exam
Belgian Defence (Defensie / La Défense) selects military candidates through a two-day procedure at the Dienst Onthaal en Oriëntatie (DOO) in Neder-Over-Heembeek. Every candidate completes medical screening, two sport tests (side bridge and treadmill), a personality/competency computer test, and the five-module Geautomatiseerde Cognitieve Testbatterij (GCTB) Basistest that measures speed and accuracy of information processing: numerical skill, spatial positioning, word memory, reasoning, and error detection. Day 2 adds a clinical medical circuit and a competency interview using real examples, followed by an orientation interview. Official booklets and pages are in Dutch and French. This free 2026 bank is an English-language multiple-choice study adaptation of the published Basistest skills and of the official sport, medical, and process rules — it is not an official translation or a simulation of the computer-timed, sport, medical, or interview sittings.
Assessment
Day 1 for all candidates: GP fitness certificate; spine/pelvis X-ray; BMI; ECG; urine and drug tests; pregnancy declaration; side-bridge (left and right, 5 minutes between) and treadmill run (1-minute warm-up, start 6 km/h, +0.3 km/h every 30 seconds, 2% incline); personality/competency computer test; five-module GCTB Basistest (getalvaardigheid, plaatsbepaling, woordgeheugen, redeneren, foutenherkenning). Day 2: clinical exam, vision, hearing, ENT, dental; competency interview; orientation interview. Extra tests appear on the vacancy.
Time Limit
Two days for most functions; extra tests for some vacancies may be on other dates
Passing Score
No published fixed cutoff; ranking uses results, and vacancy standards apply
Exam Fee
No published application fee (Belgian Defence — Dienst Onthaal en Oriëntatie (DOO) / Service d'Accueil et d'Orientation, Neder-Over-Heembeek)
Defensie Selectie Exam Content Outline
Getalvaardigheidstest (numerical skill)
Compute two mental-arithmetic results in sequence, remember them, then mark which is larger or if they are equal using the official buttons Boven (upper line), Onder (lower line) or Gelijk (equal) — Haut, Bas, Égal in the French booklet. No calculator, paper, or pencil is allowed.
Plaatsbepalingstest (spatial positioning)
Memorise rules that combine arrow direction (up, down, left, right) and colour (black or yellow), then select the figure pair that matches the remembered rules.
Woordgeheugentest (word memory)
Memorise three category rules in order, then count how many of three later words match those categories in the same positions (score 0, 1, 2, or 3).
Redeneertest (reasoning)
From two comparative sentences, choose the unique correct conclusion among three options (fastest/slowest, heaviest, leftmost, and similar relations).
Foutenherkenningstest (error detection)
Compare a correct character string with a copy and report the exact error count. Official response options are 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4.
Sport tests
Side bridge held as long as possible on each side with 5 minutes between; treadmill after 1-minute warm-up starts at 6 km/h and rises 0.3 km/h every 30 seconds at 2% incline. Combat functions add pull-ups, push-ups, and a combat run.
Medical eligibility and selection process
MHKA BMI/PSIVCAME rules, height, drugs, tattoos, nationality and diploma gates, two-day DOO timetable, competency interview, orientation, and training locations (regional centres, KSOO/ERSO Saffraanberg, KMS/ERM Brussels).

Defensie Selectie Study Tips from Top Performers
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Belgian Defence military selection procedure?
It is the official two-day recruitment selection at the Dienst Onthaal en Oriëntatie (DOO) in Neder-Over-Heembeek. Most functions complete medical tests, sport tests, a personality computer test, the five-module GCTB Basistest, an interview, and an orientation interview. Extra tests for some jobs are listed on the vacancy.
What is the GCTB Basistest?
The Geautomatiseerde Cognitieve Testbatterij (GCTB) — Batterie de Tests Cognitifs Automatisée (BTCA) in French — is the computerised cognitive battery used at DOO. It has five modules: numerical skill (getalvaardigheid), spatial positioning (plaatsbepaling), word memory (woordgeheugen), reasoning (redeneren), and error detection (foutenherkenning). Score depends on both speed and accuracy, and no paper, pencil, or calculator is allowed.
In which languages is the official selection delivered?
Belgian Defence publishes the selection pages and official practice booklets in Dutch and French. Do not assume an official English sitting exists. This OpenExamPrep bank is an English-language MCQ study adaptation, not an official translation or a simulation of the Dutch/French computer test.
How much does the selection cost?
Official recruitment pages describe applying via careers.mil.be and attending DOO tests as part of hiring. They do not publish a candidate examination fee.
Is there a published passing score or item count?
No. Belgian Defence does not publish a fixed percentage cutoff or a fixed multiple-choice item count. Results are used in ranking and orientation; vacancy-specific extra tests may apply.
What sport tests does every candidate take?
Two tests: a side bridge held as long as possible on the left and on the right with 5 minutes between sides, and a treadmill run after a 1-minute warm-up starting at 6 km/h, increasing 0.3 km/h every 30 seconds, at a constant 2% incline. The treadmill counts for the larger share of sport points. Combat functions add pull-ups, push-ups, and a combat run.
What BMI rules apply?
MHKA uses BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)². BMI below 17 or above 30 is temporary unfitness of at least 3 months. BMI 20–25 is assessed P2. BMI 17–20 and 25–30 use extra muscle-mass or body-fat checks. Combat functions require P2.
Are these practice questions the official exam?
No. They are an English-language multiple-choice study aid built from the skills shown in Defence's own public Basistest practice booklet and from published medical, sport, and process rules. They are not the live secured GCTB item set, and they do not replace the Dutch/French computer-timed battery or substitute for sport, medical, personality, or interview performance.
