About the NSW OC Test Exam

The NSW Opportunity Class (OC) Placement Test is the statewide test used to select high-potential and gifted Year 4 students for opportunity-class placement in Years 5 and 6 at participating NSW public primary schools. Since 2025 it is computer-based and administered by ACER on behalf of the NSW Department of Education. It has three all-multiple-choice sections: Reading, which uses short passages to assess comprehension and inference; Mathematical Reasoning, which applies Year 4 mathematics to unfamiliar problems involving number, patterns, measurement and logic; and Thinking Skills, which assesses critical and logical reasoning, deduction and sequences without requiring previous subject knowledge. The department states the test measures ability rather than curriculum achievement and that coaching is not necessary.
