About the Pest Control Exam
The Licensed Pest Control Applicator exam tests knowledge from the National Pesticide Applicator Certification Core Manual. It covers IPM principles, federal laws (FIFRA), pesticide labels, formulations, personal protective equipment, environmental protection, and application equipment. Passing the core exam and a category exam lets you be certified to use restricted-use pesticides in that category and to supervise noncertified applicators who use them.

How does the Pest Control vocabulary game work?
Each round shows a clue for one of 20 Pest Control terms. Guess the term in six tries: green means the right letter in the right spot, yellow means the letter is in the term but in another spot, and gray means it is not in the term. After the round, read the explanation and play the next term.
Where do the Pest Control terms come from?
OpenExamPrep researched each term from the EPA / State Departments of Agriculture content outline and primary sources, listed under Sources on this page. The game is independent study material, not an official exam resource.
What is the passing score for the pesticide applicator exam?
Each state, tribe or territory sets its own passing score and number of questions, so check with your certifying agency (usually the state Department of Agriculture). Federal rules require only a passing score on a proctored written exam that covers the core competency areas and your category.
What is the difference between the Core exam and category exams?
The Core exam covers general pesticide safety, laws, and environmental protection applicable to all applicators. Category exams are specific to the type of pest control you'll perform — such as Agricultural (1A), Ornamental and Turf (3), Right-of-Way (6), or Structural Pest Control (7). You must pass Core plus at least one category to become certified.
