How do the ND Water/Wastewater Operator vocabulary games work?

There are 4 games built on 20 ND Water/Wastewater Operator terms. In Guess the Term, a clue describes one term and you have six tries to spell it, with green, yellow and gray letters showing how close you are. In Term Match, six terms appear as colored tiles; swap neighbors to line up three or more of the same term, and each match shows what the term means. In Term Pairs, twelve face-down cards hide six pairs of terms; flip two at a time to find each pair, and every pair you find shows what the term means. In Term Search, five terms hide in a grid of letters, reading across, down or diagonally; drag across a term to circle it, and each term you find shows what it means.

OpenExamPrep researched each term from the ND Department of Environmental Quality (NDDEQ) content outline and primary sources, listed under Sources on this page. The game is independent study material, not an official exam resource.

How does ND classify water and wastewater facilities?

North Dakota classifies water and wastewater facilities in one of five classes (IA, I, II, III and IV) based on population served, treatment processes and complexity. Operators must hold a certificate at least equal to the classification of the facility or system where they have direct responsible charge.

How often must ND operator certificates be renewed?

ND operator certificates are valid for a maximum of one year and expire on January 1 (the April 1, 2026 rule change moved the date from July 1, so the July 2026 renewal moved to January 2027). Renewal requires twelve continuing education credits (CECs) earned within the current three-year period and the annual renewal fee. Each NDDEQ training session attended earns 12 CECs.
