About the CrossFit L1 Exam

The CrossFit Level 1 Trainer Certificate (CF-L1) is the entry credential to coach CrossFit. Candidates attend a 2-day Level 1 Certificate Course (approximately 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. each day) covering CrossFit methodology, the 9 foundational movements (squat, front squat, overhead squat; press, push press, push jerk; deadlift, sumo deadlift high pull, medicine-ball clean), programming, scaling, nutrition, and class coaching. Effective April 1, 2025, the Level 1 Test is administered online post-course (no longer on-site Day 2) and must be completed within 8 days following the course. The exam is 55 multiple-choice questions (50 scored + 5 unscored pretest) with a 60-minute time limit for the English version (75 minutes for non-English versions). The credential is valid for 5 years; trainers revalidate by re-attending the course and passing the test or by completing the Online Level 1 Course.

Yes. The game is free to play with no sign-up. Signing in adds AI explanations for any term.

How do the CF-L1 vocabulary games work?

There are 4 games built on 20 CF-L1 terms. In Guess the Term, a clue describes one term and you have six tries to spell it, with green, yellow and gray letters showing how close you are. In Term Match, six terms appear as colored tiles; swap neighbors to line up three or more of the same term, and each match shows what the term means. In Term Pairs, twelve face-down cards hide six pairs of terms; flip two at a time to find each pair, and every pair you find shows what the term means. In Term Search, five terms hide in a grid of letters, reading across, down or diagonally; drag across a term to circle it, and each term you find shows what it means.

Where do the CF-L1 terms come from?

OpenExamPrep researched each term from the CrossFit, LLC (online test in a secure browser) content outline and primary sources, listed under Sources on this page. The game is independent study material, not an official exam resource.
