About the ASWB Masters Exam
The ASWB Masters Examination is the MSW-level licensing exam used by U.S. states and Canadian provinces to credential MSW graduates (LMSW in many jurisdictions). The exam tests human behavior across the lifespan, biopsychosocial assessment using DSM-5-TR, evidence-based interventions with individuals/families/groups/communities, and professional values and ethics. Compared to the Bachelors exam, items emphasize complexity, diagnostic reasoning, and evidence-based practice.

Yes. The game is free to play with no sign-up. Signing in adds AI explanations for any term.
How does the ASWB Masters vocabulary game work?
Each round shows a clue for one of 20 ASWB Masters terms. Guess the term in six tries: green means the right letter in the right spot, yellow means the letter is in the term but in another spot, and gray means it is not in the term. After the round, read the explanation and play the next term.
Where do the ASWB Masters terms come from?
OpenExamPrep researched each term from the ASWB content outline and primary sources, listed under Sources on this page. The game is independent study material, not an official exam resource.
What changed for the ASWB Masters exam in 2026?
Since August 3, 2026, the Masters exam follows a three-area blueprint: Values and Ethics (35%), Assessment and Planning (33%), and Intervention and Practice (32%). The exam went from 170 total items (150 scored + 20 pretest) to 122 (110 scored + 12 pretest), the four-hour time limit is unchanged, and a higher proportion of items have three options and test applied professional judgment.
Who is eligible to take the ASWB Masters exam?
Candidates need an MSW from a CSWE-accredited program (or equivalent international program) and approval to test from the social work board in the jurisdiction where they will be licensed. Many states allow MSW graduates to test for LMSW without post-degree clinical hours; clinical practice requires the ASWB Clinical exam after supervised clinical experience.
