Frequently Asked Questions

What is the passing score for the NBE Arts and Sciences exam?

Each section (Arts and Sciences) is scored on a scaled range and requires a scaled score of 75 to pass. Scores are reported per section, so passing one section does not automatically pass the other — sections may be retaken independently.

How many questions are on the NBE, and how much time do candidates get?

The NBE has two sections — Arts and Sciences — administered separately. Each section contains 170 multiple-choice questions (150 scored plus 20 unscored pretest items) with a 170-minute time limit per section.

What happens if a candidate fails a section of the NBE?

Candidates must wait 30 days before retesting a failed section, and this 30-day wait applies to every retake regardless of how many times a candidate has failed — The Conference does not publish an escalating wait period after multiple failures. A new application and the section fee must be submitted for each retake attempt.

Is employer sponsorship required to sit for the NBE?

No. Eligibility is based on completing (or being enrolled in) an accredited funeral service education program that meets the candidate's state board requirements, not on employer sponsorship. Some states additionally require apprenticeship hours for licensure, but this is separate from NBE eligibility itself.

What are the current NBE pass rates?

The Conference's most recently published statistics report 2025 first-time pass rates of 78% for the Arts section and 71% for the Sciences section. The Conference publishes updated statistics annually on its website.
