Ideal pH range for a swimming pool

7.2 to 7.8. Below 7.2 the water is corrosive and irritates eyes; above 7.8 chlorine loses killing power, scale forms, and water clouds. The narrow optimum target is 7.4 to 7.6, matching the pH of the human eye.

Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) vs hypochlorite ion (OCl-)

Free chlorine exists as a mix of HOCl (the strong, fast killing form) and OCl- (much weaker). As pH rises, the equilibrium shifts toward OCl-, so the strong killing form drops. This is why keeping pH near 7.4 to 7.6 maximizes sanitizer effectiveness.

Total alkalinity ideal range and role

80 to 120 ppm. Total alkalinity is the water's buffer against pH changes, not a measure of dissolved solids. Too low causes rapid pH bounce and corrosive water; too high makes pH hard to adjust and can cloud the water.

Calcium hardness ideal range

200 to 400 ppm. Below this, soft calcium-hungry water etches plaster, dissolves grout, and corrodes metal. Above it, calcium deposits as scale on surfaces and equipment, and the water clouds.

pH bounce

A rapid, unstable swing in pH caused by low total alkalinity. Without enough alkalinity to buffer the water, every chemical addition sends pH soaring or crashing, making the pool hard to balance and corrosive to surfaces and equipment.

Langelier Saturation Index (LSI)

A calculated number that predicts whether water will deposit scale (positive LSI) or dissolve calcium from surfaces (negative LSI). The balanced target is roughly -0.3 to +0.3; values outside that band indicate corrective action on pH, alkalinity, or calcium hardness.

LSI of -0.6 meaning

Negative LSI below about -0.3 means corrosive, calcium-hungry water that etches plaster, dissolves grout, and attacks metal. The corrective goal is to raise pH, total alkalinity, and/or calcium hardness to bring the LSI back toward 0.

Factors used in the LSI calculation

pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, water temperature, and total dissolved solids (TDS). Free chlorine is not a factor in LSI. Knowing which inputs matter, and that chlorine is excluded, is a common CPO exam point.

Free chlorine vs combined chlorine vs total chlorine

Free chlorine is the active, unused sanitizer available to kill pathogens. Combined chlorine (chloramines) is chlorine that has reacted with swimmer waste and is a weak sanitizer. Total chlorine is the sum of both, measured in the same DPD test.

How combined chlorine (chloramines) forms

Free chlorine reacts with nitrogen-containing organic waste from swimmers, such as sweat and urine, to form chloramines. Chloramines are poor sanitizers and are the real source of the strong 'chlorine' odor and eye irritation commonly blamed on too much chlorine.

Combined chlorine level above about 0.2 ppm

Causes eye and respiratory irritation and the pungent 'pool smell' that signals the water actually needs more chlorine, not less. The fix is to shock (superchlorinate) past breakpoint so the added free chlorine oxidizes the chloramines away.

Breakpoint chlorination ratio

About 10 parts of free chlorine are required to destroy 1 part of combined chlorine. Adding less than this 10:1 ratio can create more chloramines instead of oxidizing them, which is why operators shock well past the breakpoint rather than adding a small amount.

Chlorine demand

The amount of chlorine consumed by contaminants (organic matter, ammonia, algae) before any measurable free chlorine residual remains. You must satisfy the demand first; only chlorine added beyond the demand shows up as a free chlorine residual the test can read.

Cyanuric acid (CYA / stabilizer / conditioner) ideal range and risk

About 30 to 50 ppm for outdoor chlorinated pools. CYA shields free chlorine from UV breakdown, but above roughly 90 to 100 ppm it slows chlorine's killing power so much that the code caps it (often 90 ppm). Over-stabilized water usually must be partially drained and refilled.

Bromine vs chlorine as a spa sanitizer

Bromine stays effective across a wider pH range and at spa-hot temperatures, and its combined form (bromamines) still sanitizes, unlike chloramines. This makes bromine popular for hot tubs and indoor spas. Bromine is not UV-stable, so it is a poor choice for outdoor sunlit pools.

ORP (oxidation-reduction potential) measurement

ORP measures the oxidizing, sanitizing strength of the water in millivolts (mV), not a chlorine concentration in ppm. A common operational target is about 650 to 750 mV. ORP responds to pH and CYA, so it complements but does not replace a direct free-chlorine test.

Three common types of pool filter

Sand, cartridge, and diatomaceous earth (DE). Reverse osmosis is a water purification process, not a pool filter. Sand and DE filters are cleaned by backwashing; cartridge filters are not, because backwashing would damage the pleated material.

How a sand filter is cleaned

By backwashing, which reverses water flow through the sand bed to flush trapped dirt to waste. Sand is replaced only every 3 to 5 years, not on every cleaning. A high-rate sand filter typically runs at about 15 to 20 gpm per square foot of filter area.

How a cartridge filter is cleaned

Remove the cartridge and spray it with a garden hose. Cartridge filters cannot be backwashed, and soaking in muriatic acid can damage the pleated material. A filter-cleaning solution soak can remove oils and stubborn grime.

How a DE filter is cleaned

Backwash to remove the old DE powder and the trapped dirt, then recharge the filter with fresh DE powder. The DE grids themselves are only replaced when old and worn out. Spraying with a hose alone does not effectively clean a DE filter.

When to backwash a sand or DE filter

When the filter pressure gauge rises about 8 to 10 psi above the clean, just-serviced starting pressure. Rising pressure with falling flow means the media is loaded. Backwashing on a fixed schedule regardless of pressure wastes water and can actually reduce filtration efficiency.

Primary purpose of the pool pump

To circulate water through the filter, heater, and chemical feeder and return it to the pool. It is the heart of the circulation system. The pump does not heat water (the heater does), skim the surface (the skimmer does), or add chlorine (the feeder does).

Turnover rate

The time it takes for the entire pool volume to pass through the filter system. It is an operational design target, not evaporation rate, bather load, or chemical feed rate. Pool codes set minimum turnover requirements by pool type.

Recommended turnover rate for a public swimming pool

At least once every 6 hours. A 24-hour or 12-hour turnover is too slow to keep a public pool adequately filtered and sanitized, and a 2-hour turnover is faster than necessary for a typical pool. Faster turnover may be required for high-bather-load pools and spas.

Skimmer weir

The floating door at the front of the skimmer. It creates a smooth, calm surface that lets the skimmer draw in leaves and floating debris effectively. The skimmer basket, not the weir, prevents debris from reaching the pump.

Pump strainer basket

A basket in front of the pump that traps leaves, hair, and large debris before they can enter and damage the pump impeller. It must be emptied regularly. It does not regulate flow into the pump or add chemicals.

Rule for diluting muriatic acid

Always add acid TO water, never water to acid. Adding water to concentrated acid causes a violent exothermic reaction that can splash acid and cause burns. The memory aid is 'do as you oughta, add acid to water.'

Mixing muriatic acid with chlorine (e.g., cal-hypo)

Releases toxic chlorine gas and can generate enough heat to cause fire or explosion. Pool chemicals must be stored separately in original labeled containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, and never mixed except as the label directs.

Proper pool chemical storage conditions

A cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from children and pets, in original containers with labels intact. Direct sunlight breaks some chemicals down, dampness causes clumping and unwanted reactions, and storage next to the pump risks a leak triggering a dangerous mix.

Safety Data Sheet (SDS, formerly MSDS)

A document that explains a chemical's hazards and how to handle it safely, including physical properties and health effects. It must be kept in a location easily accessible to employees, not locked away, so it can be reached quickly in an emergency.

Three common types of chemical feeder

Erosion feeders (use tablets or sticks), floating feeders, and injection feeders (use a pump to inject liquid chemicals). Manual feeding, where chemicals are added by hand, is a method of addition but is not a type of feeder.

Rectangular pool volume formula (gallons)

Length (ft) x Width (ft) x Average Depth (ft) x 7.5 = volume in gallons. The 7.5 factor converts cubic feet to gallons (1 cubic foot holds about 7.5 gallons). Use the average depth for sloped pools so the volume estimate reflects the actual shape.

Round (circular) pool volume formula (gallons)

Radius squared x 3.14 x Average Depth (ft) x 7.5 = volume in gallons. Radius is half the diameter. For a 20-ft-diameter, 4-ft-deep round pool: 10 x 10 x 3.14 x 4 x 7.5 is about 9,420 gallons.

Chemical dosage formula (pounds to raise 1 ppm)

Pounds = ppm x gallons x 8.34 / 1,000,000. To raise 1 ppm in 100,000 gallons takes about 0.834 lb of pure chemical. For a product that is only 65% available chlorine (like cal-hypo), divide the result by 0.65 to get the pounds of product needed.

Suction entrapment hazard

When a swimmer's body, hair, or clothing is trapped against a suction outlet (main drain or skimmer) by pump suction, holding them underwater. The primary danger is drowning, not electrical shock, chemical burns, or slipping.

Safety Vacuum Release System (SVRS)

A device that automatically shuts off the pool pump when it detects a sudden rise in vacuum (such as a person sealed against a drain), releasing the suction so the swimmer can get free. It is a backup layer, not a replacement for compliant anti-entrapment drain covers.

Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act

Federal law that requires every public pool and spa main drain to have an ANSI/ASME A112.19.8-compliant anti-entrapment drain cover. Pools with a single main drain (not unblockable) must also have a secondary anti-entrapment system such as an SVRS or gravity drainage.

Ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI)

A safety device that protects people from electrical shock by monitoring current flow and shutting off power when it detects a ground fault. It does not protect the pump from damage, regulate voltage, or sound a power-outage alarm. Pool pumps, lights, and nearby outlets require GFCI protection.

Bonding vs grounding in a pool electrical system

Bonding connects all metal pool components together to create one common electrical potential; grounding connects the electrical system to earth. Both together prevent dangerous voltage differences that could shock swimmers. They do not improve equipment efficiency or lifespan.

No-diving water depth threshold

About 5 feet (1.5 m). Most aquatic safety guidelines and pool codes require 'NO DIVING' markings and prohibit headfirst entry in water shallower than this, because the vast majority of catastrophic diving spinal injuries occur in water under 5 feet. The 9-foot minimum applies under a diving board, not the no-diving threshold.

Minimum recommended pool fence height and gate type

4 feet minimum, with a self-closing and self-latching gate. The self-closing mechanism ensures the gate always swings shut and latches, preventing young children from wandering into the pool area. Some local codes require taller fences, so check the local code.

Maximum recommended spa water temperature

104 F (40 C). Temperatures above this raise the risk of heat-related illness and are unsafe for soakers, especially for extended sessions. Many commercial spas are limited further (often 100 to 102 F) and require a time limit for high-temperature soaking.

Recommended free chlorine level for a spa

3.0 to 5.0 ppm, higher than the 1.0 to 3.0 ppm pool range. Spa water is hot and carries a much higher bather load per gallon, which consumes chlorine faster. The recommended pH and calcium hardness ranges are the same for pools and spas.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa in spas

The most common spa-associated bacterium, causing 'hot tub rash' (folliculitis), an itchy skin rash. Warm spa water with low sanitizer favors its growth. Maintaining free chlorine at 3.0 to 5.0 ppm, good filtration, and regular shocking control it.

Air blower vs ozonator in a spa

An air blower pushes air through jets to create bubbles and a massaging action; it does not circulate water (the pump does), heat water (the heater does), or add sanitizer. An ozonator is a separate device that injects ozone, a supplemental oxidizer, into the water.

Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) pool requirements

The ADA requires that people with disabilities have equal access to swimming pools. This means accessible entries such as sloped entries, pool lifts, or transfer systems, depending on pool type and size. It does not regulate chemicals, mandate lifeguards, or set construction standards, which are handled by building and health codes.

Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC)

A CDC guidance document that states and local agencies can adopt as a baseline for pool and spa regulation. For example, it recommends a free chlorine residual of 1.0 to 4.0 ppm in public pools with cyanuric acid present, and caps CYA at 90 ppm to avoid 'chlorine lock.'

Pool permit vs certificate of compliance

A pool permit is issued by the local building department to authorize building or renovating a pool. A certificate of compliance is issued by the local health department after inspection, certifying the pool meets code for operation, and it must be renewed periodically.

Pool log book purpose and contents

Records the results of water tests plus chemical additions, maintenance, and any incidents or accidents, used to demonstrate compliance with the health code. It is not a swimmer sign-in sheet or a place to store the pool rules; those have separate postings.

Diarrheal fecal incident response (Cryptosporidium)

Close the pool, remove the fecal matter, then hyperchlorinate. CDC guidance for a diarrheal incident is to raise free chlorine to 20 ppm with pH at 7.5 or lower and no CYA, held for about 13 hours to reach the Crypto inactivation CT value of 15,300. A formed-stool incident only requires raising free chlorine to about 2 ppm.
