Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions are on the CGRN exam?

The ABCGN CGRN exam contains 175 multiple-choice questions: 150 scored questions and 25 unscored pretest items. Candidates have 3 hours to complete the exam, which is delivered by computer at Prometric test centers or by approved remote proctoring. Content is drawn from four domains: General Nursing Care (21%), Gastroenterological Procedures (35%), Patient Care Interventions (25%), and Environmental Safety, Infection Prevention and Control (19%).

What is the passing score for the CGRN exam?

ABCGN uses criterion-referenced scoring set by the Modified Angoff method, not a curve. A scaled score of 450 is required to pass the RN examination. Because raw scores are converted to a common scale, the number of questions you must answer correctly is not a fixed percentage; it reflects the difficulty of the form you receive. Scores are equated so all candidates are held to the same standard of competency.

What are the CGRN eligibility requirements?

You must hold a current, unrestricted RN license in the United States or Canada and document a minimum of two years full-time GI/endoscopy nursing experience, or its part-time equivalent of 4,000 hours, within the past five years. Qualifying experience may be clinical, supervisory, administrative, teaching, or research. Applications require professional references to verify the practice hours.

What are the hardest topics on the CGRN exam?

Candidates report the most difficulty with: (1) endoscope reprocessing steps and the sequence of leak testing, manual cleaning, and high-level disinfection; (2) recognizing and managing procedure complications such as post-ERCP pancreatitis, perforation, and post-polypectomy bleeding; (3) moderate sedation monitoring including capnography interpretation and reversal-agent dosing; and (4) GI pharmacology. Gastroenterological Procedures is the largest single domain at 35%.

How long is CGRN certification valid?

CGRN certification is valid for five years. Nurses can recertify by accruing at least 75 contact hours of approved continuing education in gastroenterology nursing or a related field across the five-year cycle and documenting active practice, or by retaking the certification examination. Letting the credential lapse generally requires retaking the exam to reinstate certified status.

How should I prepare for the CGRN exam?

Study across all four blueprint domains using the ABCGN Test Blueprint and Candidate Handbook plus established GI nursing references such as the SGNA standards of practice and core curriculum. Prioritize high-yield areas: endoscopic procedure workflow, moderate sedation and capnography monitoring, endoscope reprocessing, infection prevention including CRE and C. difficile, complication recognition, and specimen handling. Most candidates invest 110-170 hours over 10-18 weeks.
